Village:  Maite
AmeriCorps Projects:
Tutoring basic skills in Math, English, and Social Studies, to students enrolled at the Guam Community College (GCC).
Why I decided to serve: I wanted to give back to the community, to do something fulfilling that I could feel proud about.  I also wanted to help people and have a positive impact.  This is why I chose the tutorial division of AmeriCorps.
What I did:  I have helped foreign students who are enrolled at GCC in their English
and writing skills.  I have also become more aware of community events (i.e. Relay for Cancer in May) that I can participate for years to come.
What made the biggest impact on me:
Helping foreign students with their English and grammar has given me a great sense of satisfaction.
What I've learned: My volunteer work with AmeriCorps has made me reconsider my own personal educational path, so much that I have decided to transfer my major from Business to Education, to become a teacher.
What I've gained: As a tutor, I've learned that I enjoy teaching, something I never would have thought of as exciting, had I not been an AmeriCorps volunteer.
