Ich musste um zwei Uhr nachts aufstehen. Stöhn, ächze. Wieso das alles? Tja, weil ich halt gerne nach Kalifornien wollte. Und ich muss sagen, der wenige Schlaf hat sich gelohnt. Wir kamen am 23. März auf dem Flughafen in San Diego an und wurden mit Plakaten und freundlichen Gesichtern in Empfang genommen. Als ich am Montag danach in die Schule West Hills High School kam, war ich beeindruckt. Alle Gebäude sehen gleich aus und passen zueinander! Die Schule hat für jede Fachrichtung ein Gebäude. So gibt es etwa ein Mathe-, ein Kunst- und ein Fremdsprachengebäude.
Die Schule hat eine riesige Sportfläche hinter der Schule. Dort gibt es Felder für Football, Baseball, Diskuswerfen und so weiter. Zusätzlich haben sie eine große Sporthalle, die ebenfalls unterteilt ist. Die Schule hat einen Aerobicraum, einen „Weightroom" also einen Raum, in dem man allerlei Gewichte stemmen kann. Uns wurde erklärt, dass sich in diesem Raum die Footballer fit halten. Ich war echt beeindruckt, als ein Junge 225 Pfund mal ebenso hochstemmte. Das ist fast soviel wie zwei leichte Mädchen wiegen. Die Schulzeiten sind anders als bei uns. Zwar fängt die erste Stunde um 7:45 Uhr an, endet aber erst um 8:40 Uhr. Die Schulstunden dauern hier also meistens 55 Minuten.
Außerdem haben die Schüler jeden Tag die selben Stunden. Beispiel: Man hat in der ersten Stunde Theater, in der zweiten Mathe, in der dritten Aerobic, in der vierten Deutsch, in der fünften Englisch und in der sechsten Geschichte. Und diese Stunden hat man dann jeden Tag. Am dritten Tag haben wir abends das Musical „Music Man" geguckt. Dieses Theaterstück wurde von den Schülern aufgeführt und war recht gut. Leider waren die meisten von uns so müde von den restlichen Ereignissen an diesem Tag, dass einige zwischenzeitlich wegnickten.
In den folgenden Tagen haben wir viele coole Sachen gemacht. So haben wir zum Beispiel ein Baseball-Spiel angeguckt. Wir sind nach San Diego gefahren, was ebenfalls lustig war. Dort sind wir ein wenig an der Strandpromenade entlang gewandert und haben die vielen kleinen Geschäfte angeguckt.
Am Samstag sind wir mit kleinen Umwegen, über diverse Plätze wo es verdammt leckeres Essen gab, in die Wüste gefahren. Dort war es kälter als erwartet und somit habe ich ein wenig gefröstelt. Nach der Wüste sind wir dann in eine nette kleine Stadt gefahren und haben Apple pie gegessen. Erwähnenswert wäre von meiner Seite noch das „Easter picnic", wo wir Ostereier suchen durften.
Bislang hatte ich sehr viel Spaß hier und kann diesen Austausch nur weiter empfehlen. Lasst euch diesen Spaß nicht entgehen, falls ihr die Gelegenheit habt.
Donnerstag sind wir dann nach Old Town gegangen. Dort waren die Häuser so gehalten, wie sie wohl waren, als Santee erbaut wurde. Am Abend sind wir dort mexikanisch Essen gegangen. Tja, mexikanisches Essen wird wohl nicht meine neue Lieblingsspeise.
Den Dienstag danach waren wir in Disneyland. Wir hatten viel Spaß dort und haben es sogar geschafft, fast alle Attraktionen zu sehen. Die Beach Party, welche am Mittwoch darauf war, war ebenfalls lustig. Außer den Austauschschülern waren auch noch einige Eltern und Schüler aus den verschiedenen Deutschkursen dort. Es war toll Anfang April am Strand zu sitzen und sogar im Meer schwimmen zu gehen. Im Laufe der Party gab es dann Hot Dogs und andere leckere Sachen. Mmmh, Davids Schokokuchen. Himmlisch. Der Abschied am Donnerstagmorgen lief recht typisch ab. Alle haben sich verabschiedet, es wurden noch ein paar Gruppenfotos gemacht und sich versprochen E-Mails zu schicken.
In San Francisco angekommen stellte ich zunächst erleichtert fest, dass die Jugendherberge echt gut war (im Vergleich mit der letzten sozusagen verdammt nobel...).
Wir haben die typischen Touristen-Sachen gemacht. Also besichtigten wir die Bay Bridge und die Golden Gate Bridge, wobei ich die Gruppe dazu zwang, bis zum ersten Pfeiler zu laufen. Ich wusste gar nicht mehr, wie weit das doch war. Wir waren am Pier 39, der touristenfreundlich süße kleine Geschäfte auf einem Fleck bündelt, inklusive einem Hard Rock Café, in welches einige von uns auch gingen.
Während der Rest der Gruppe nach Alcatraz ging, liefen Ines und ich durch Chinatown und kauften das ein oder andere Souvenir. Die restliche Zeit verbrachten wir in einem Starbucks Café. Einige Mitglieder der Gruppe könnten behaupten, dass mein Hauptaufenthaltsort Starbucks gewesen ist. Tja, sie könnten Recht haben. Aber immerhin habe ich es geschafft, alle wichtigen Sachen zu sehen und noch genug Zeit für einen entspannenden Kaffee oder White Chocolate Mocha zu haben. Ich hatte eine echt gute Zeit in Santee und San Francisco. Auch die evtl. Probleme wegen des Irak Krieges blieben völlig aus. Vielmehr waren die meisten Leute, die ich getroffen habe, gegen den Krieg und z.T. gegen Bush. Wenn sich die Gelegenheit bieten würde, irgendwann nochmals in die Region zu reisen, würde ich es auf jeden Fall machen.
Our first school day was Monday. We attended the classes of our hosts. So my first class was theatre. We began to watch the musical “South Pacific”. I kind of began to like Emile de Beque, who is a main character in the movie. The second period we had math. I was surprised, because it seemed different from what we do in Germany. At least you get the same answer, but the way is different. The third period was aerobics. I think it is really cool, because we don’t have that kind of P.E. in Germany. If you want to do aerobics, you will have to pay for it. The same if you want to go to the weight room. Fourth period was German, which was relaxing for me. J The fifth period we never attended. And sixth period was history, which is pretty much the same like in our school.
On Tuesday, we went to the play “Music Man“, which I really enjoyed. But I was pretty tired. Luckily, three nice students had explained the play’s plot to us. It helped me to understand the story.
On Wednesday, we represented our school at the freshman orientation. On Thursday, we walked to the Mission Gorge Dam and enjoyed the environment. In the afternoon we watched the baseball game vs. Monte Vista. It was interesting.
On Pack Day, we did presentations the whole day. We told the students and their parents some things about Aurich, our school and East Friesian traditions. In the afternoon, we went to San Diego by Trolley. Well, I missed the trolley, but San Diego was cool. We walked around and had a quick look at the little shops there, which was pretty interesting. In the evening, my host, some of her friends and I went to “Denny’s”, because my host is a member of the technical crew of “Music Man”. So we sat there and had some nice conversations with cast- and crewmembers. I really enjoyed the evening.
On Saturday, we went to Borrego Springs. It was cool, because we went to Dudley’s Lunch, and after the desert, we drove to Julian and had some apple pie. In the evening, I went to the “Music Man” cast party with my “techie” (host). It was cool, because everybody was really friendly and tried to make me feel comfortable. I had a long interesting chat with a crewmember that is pretty nice.
On Sunday, I could hardly stay awake… But I had a lot of fun on this day. My host family took me to brunch and after that to the movies. The following Monday, we continued our presentations about Germany, youth life in Germany and stuff. In the afternoon, we went to Mission San Diego, which was a bit boring, because our guide was just used to give tours to little children. The next day, we still continued with our presentations. But we cooked tea for the students and made them drink it traditionally with rock sugar and heavy cream (don’t stir!).
Yesterday, we had an Easter picnic, which was funny. They made us search eggs with little gifts inside. We played beach volleyball, which was cool, because we played with about ten people each team. And we played “chubby bunny” with marshmallows. I was out after three marshmallows (arrgg, embarrassing).
Well, anyways. Now I’m sitting in the computer lab and writing this report. This exchange was really cool, so far. I bet the spring break will be great, too. From the 10th to the 13th, we will be in San Francisco. Hopefully this will be fun, too. I enjoyed my time here and met cool people. Hopefully, the exchange students will have as much fun as I did here, when they come over to Germany.
The Old Town walk about we did on Thursday was cool, too. After that we went to a Mexican restaurant. I personally didn’t like the food too much. But it was nice.
Friday was the last school day and a minimum day. Everybody was a bit excited because of Spring Break. During the rest of our stay I watched some cool movies. I liked it a lot to hear the actor’s original voices. Tuesday, we went to Disneyland. I bet I looked like a foolish little child when I saw Winnie the Pooh and Tigger. Disneyland was pretty cool. I never have been to it before.
On Wednesday we had a beach party. Not only the hosts were there but many parents and some students from the German classes, too. David’s chocolate cake, mmhhh! In the evening we went to the movies and saw “A view from the top”, which deals with stewardesses somehow. It was a cool movie, especially because we would take off the next day.
So on Thursday was our departure. It was kind of a sad moment. I met many people I would love to see again, but the chance that I will, are slim to none. We said goodbye to everyone and took off to San Francisco. We had a great time in this big city. We saw the Golden Gate Bridge and went several meters on it and watched cars driving on the Bay Bridge. We went to famous Pier 39 and visited the Hard Rock Café. We walked to the Union Square, had a view on the City Hall and drove around with Cable Cars. While the rest of the group made a trip to Alcatraz, Ines and me went shopping in Chinatown and spent the rest of the time at Starbucks. Some might say that I spent all my time at Starbucks. I guess their right J. But hey, I saw a lot of interesting things and found some time to relax with a good coffee or White Chocolate Mocha…
I had a blast while I was in Santee and I want to thank all the people who made me feel that comfortable. I really enjoyed this experience and would do it again any time.
