Gut drei Wochen war ich in den USA, und habe schon einiges Neues kennen gelernt. Es hat mich einiges überrascht.
Vor allem die Beziehung der Amerikaner zu ihrem Land ist schon ziemlich komisch für mich als Deutscher. Wenn man hier mal mit Verstand durch die Strassen fährt kommt es häufig vor das die Strassen ein Fahnenmeer bilden. Wer nun allerdings glaubt dass Patriotismus mit Fremdenhaß verbunden ist, sieht sich getäuscht. Alle Leute sind hier sehr nett und zuvorkommend. Auch wenn man mal den Irak - Krieg anspricht ist es durchaus so, dass man manchmal einer Meinung ist bzw. sehr gut diskutieren kann. Ich hatte zuerst gedacht, dass sich viele von der einseitigen Berichterstattung der Medien blenden lassen. Richtig ist aber, dass die meisten die amerikanischen Medien dafür kritisieren dass sie so einseitig berichten. Außerdem muss man fairerweise auch mal sagen dass unsere Medien auch nicht gerade differenziert dokumentieren. Soviel also zu den amerikanischen Erwachsenen. Jetzt zu den Jugendlichen.
Wer die amerikanischen Jugendlichen nur aus Filmen wie American Pie oder Scary Movie kennt, erleidet, völlig überraschend, einen kleinen Kulturschock. Viele denken sehr wohl darüber nach was politisch so abgeht. Außerdem besteht für alle die Welt aus mehr als Drogen und Parties, was auch daran liegt dass die hier eher die Bausparerversion einer Jugendkultur erlebt haben. So darf man hier erst ab 18 rauchen und erst ab 21 Alkohol trinken. Die Idiotie ist aber, dass man schon mit 16 Auto fahren darf.
Was mir noch aufgefallen ist, sind die vielen Aktivitäten, die hier die Leude außerhalb der Schulzeit aber in der Schule machen. So gibt es hier viele Schulmannschaften, die die verschiedensten Sachen machen. Beliebt bei den Jungen ist z.B. Baseball, Football oder Basketball. Die Mädchen sind oft Cheerleader oder spielen Softball. Das ist allerdings kein Spiel für Softies, sondern eher so was wie Baseball für Mädchen. Beiden Geschlechtern offen steht die Theatergruppe, die in der letzten Woche das Stück MUSICMAN aufgeführt hat.
Jetzt aber zu dem Programm, das wir hier gemacht haben. Santee, der Ort in dem wir wohnen, hat den Vorteil dass es sehr nah zu San Diego ist. In San Diego war ich schon zweimal. Große Einkaufszentren, wie das Horton Plaza lassen eigentlich keinen Wunsch offen. Aber auch außerhalb der Schaufenster hat diese Stadt einiges zu bieten. So habe ich am Sonntag Wale gesehen oder am Dienstag das Baseball-Spiel der San Diego Padres zusammen mit gut 50.000 anderen Baseball - Fans verfolgt. Außerdem haben wir am Samstag einen Ausflug in die Wüste gemacht. Des weiteren war ich schon mexikanisch essen. Das war richtig lecker und für mich mal was ganz anderes.
Zum Abschluss unserer USA-Tour waren wir dann noch drei Tage in San Francisco. Der erste Gedanke, der einem bei dem Namen SF kommt ist natürlich der an die Golden Gate Bridge. Die haben wir uns natürlich angesehen. Jedoch war dass nicht das einzige, was auf dem Programm stand. Neben dem mysteriösen Gefängnis von Alcatraz, in dem auch Al Capone fünf Jahre saß haben wir eine Fahrt mit der Cable Car gemacht. Das ist eine Straßenbahn, die von einem unterirdischen Kabel gezogen wird. Früher als es noch keine Motoren gab, hat man die Cable Cars benutzt um schwere Lasten bergauf zu bekommen. Alles in allem muss ich sagen, dass San Francisco bis auf die vielen Obdachlosen, die den Gegensatz zwischen Arm und Reich auf brutale Weise zeigen, sehr schön ist. Ich hoffe ihr hattet in Aurich genauso viel Spaß wie wir hier in Santee und San Francisco,
I thought that some people would be negative towards me because I am a German and my government voted against the war on Iraq. Nevertheless, when I discussed this with the other colloquial it became clear that most share my opinion or wanted to discuss the topic with me. I first thought that the majority would be blind because of the American press. However, I was wrong. Most people criticized the press for its kind of documentation. On the other hand, I have to say that the German press was not better. They focused on the failures of the American president and forgot to write about Saddam Hussein. Now I will talk about the American pupils.
Many German kids only know the American kids from movies like American Pie or Scary Movie. Because of that, they would get a culture shock. I noticed that many pupils are interested in politics. As I expected all the people have more interests than drugs or parties. The reason for it is the laws here. I was surprised that you are not allowed to drink alcohol until the age of twenty-one. Instead of this, you can already drive a car in the age of sixteen.
Another thing I noticed was the great number of activities you can do in school, for example, the sports teams or the drama group. We do not have anything like that in Germany. The only group I knew from Germany was the drama-group. I really enjoyed the musical “ The Music Man “ .I was just a bit tired.
Now let us have a look at the program. I really enjoyed the small distance to San Diego. I really like San Diego. It is a beautiful town. I was there for twice. Especially Horton Plaza is a great place to go. However, it was not just Horton Plaza, which I liked in San Diego. Last Sunday, I was whale watching. We just saw one whale but it was fun. On Tuesday, I saw the Padres-game against San Francisco. It was cool to visit this game with 50,000 others. The trip to the desert I enjoyed, too. But I have to write about the Mexican food, too, which I never tasted before. It was good food.
At last I have to tell you about my trip to San Francisco. When we finished our exchange in Santee we went for three days to the home of the 49ers. The city was very great and amazing for me as a guy from a small town. What I did not like was the great number of homeless citizens who lived in the streets and wanted to get some money from the tourists. That was the saddest part of my trip. But I had fun in San Francisco, too. I really liked the great Golden Gate Bridge and the mysterious prison ALCATRAZ. The youth hostel was comfortable and interesting because I met some guys from England who traveled around the world for half a year.
In the end I have to say that my visit in America will always stay in my mind and I will never forget the time that I was able spend here.
I hope I will see some of you in Germany again.
