Time to let go of old zoo and new
Gazette editorial

Time has come for new park
Column by Mike Hlas
There was baseball and plenty of sunshine Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium. A crowd of 2,349 enjoyed the Cedar Rapids Kernels' home opener, with their pleasure only slightly tempered by the Kernels' 4-3 loss to Quad City. About 9 1/2 years ago, in the fall of 1988, the Hawkeye Downs Speedway Board of Directors decided to pave the popular dirt track and introduce asphalt racing to Iowa racing fans. Once the decision was made, the board needed someone to make it work. That person was Larry Kemp. Kemp and his wife, Kathleen, turned the odds around. Now Kemp is saying goodbye.
