Pate advocates new ideas for new century

Time to let go of old zoo and new
Gazette editorial
Five people have settled what a community might have decided. A zoo will not share in the
proceeds of a proposed 1-cent local option sales tax, the Cedar Rapids City Council said
officially last Wednesday. A lot of people are cheering -- maybe a majority. But a lot of others
are not.

C.R. neighborhood leads crusade for local control of preservation
Ghosts never haunted the attic of 1620 Park Ave. SE. Lions never roamed its grounds. Dignitaries
never graced its modest floors. Yet the home of Dawn Stephens and Greg Young is part of a
neighborhood that soon may become the first local historic district in Cedar Rapids.

Time has come for new park
Column by Mike Hlas
There was baseball and plenty of sunshine Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium. A crowd of 2,349 enjoyed the Cedar Rapids Kernels' home opener, with their pleasure only slightly tempered by the Kernels' 4-3 loss to Quad City. It was a good first-day crowd for the 50-year-old park. Things could be much better in that department, though. The stadium, once one of the jewels of the Midwest League, is becoming a relic.
It's the last lap for Kemp
The man who brought asphalt to Iowa tracks leaving the Downs at season's end
About 9 1/2 years ago, in the fall of 1988, the Hawkeye Downs Speedway Board of Directors decided
to pave the popular dirt track and introduce asphalt racing to Iowa racing fans. Once the decision was made, the board needed someone to make it work. That person was Larry Kemp. Kemp and his wife, Kathleen, turned the odds around. Now Kemp is saying goodbye.
