| During the early 90's, Mitsubishi and Daimler Chrysler created an agreement, in which Mitsubishi would design and engineer a car, and Daimler Chrysler would provide the factories and be able to sell the car under their names (Plymouth, Eagle). These cars were named Diamond Star Motors, shortened to DSM. Two generations came out; 1 and 2. (Duh.) The one shown above is a 2nd Gen, with swoopy, bulging lines. The 1st Gen (below) has straighter lines and a less modern look. (Earlier 1g's had pop up lights, but later ones had those removed, but the taillights remained similar.) In both generations, the top of the line model had a 4G63 motor; a turbocharged inline 4. Power was around 200HP, which isn't bad, but the potential of this engine is amazing. Spend as little as $2000 in parts on a 1g or $3500 on a 2g and a DSM can be running between 12 and 13 seconds in the quarter mile. (That's fast.) (The reason it will cost more to make a 2g faster is because it has a smaller turbo than the 1g; so you will need to buy a new one.) Basic mods include: Cold Air Intake, boost controller, boost gauge, cat back performance exhaust, high flow catalyct converter or straight pipe (The latter removes the cat, so the car is toxic), high flow downpipe, fuel pump, blow off valve (2G), O2 sensor housing, intercooler piping, turbocharger (2G), high flow exhaust manifold (2G), performance clutch, short shifter, tranny fluid, and a Limited slip differential (only for FWD cars). If it seems like a lot to you, it isn't, or atleast compared to what other cars need to make around 300HP. Handling wise, the 2G isn't so good (people say it's worse than the Mustangs of the time, which handled poorly due to a live axle) but the 1G is better, and are used commonly as autocrossers. Company's that make parts for DSM's are: Apexi, Blitz, Greddy, HKS, K&N, ATR, Dejon, Extreme Technologies, AHP, Buschur Racing, ACT, Eibach, H&R, Intrax, Koni, AEM, Brembo, Power Slot, and many others. To see or buy parts from those companies, look through the links at the very top of the page. Styling is purely subjective, but I think that both 1G and 2G DSM's can look good without aftermarket body kits. Just look at some pictures, and you will see. PS: Hey John, is ^^^that^^^ your car? |
