This is the information display for the 88-93 Gen. The later 94-96 are simluar This image shows the SELF TEST that happends everytime the key is turned. Notice the km/h this can only be used if you also have  the Drivers Information Center. (DIC)  Later there will be a HOW-TO on the DIC. Also,  due to the envolment with the cluster, if you currently have the problem where the "low Gas Light" on the cluster, the light on the HUD will also be on. Until the cluster is  repaired.

This page is built from the information done on a 1993 Grand Prix. The info is for a 1993.
And, will work with others. It is up to you to see if it will work with yours.
Thanks to mass making cars, the system for the vehicle is one size fits all. I have heard that the 92and 93's are completely pre-wired.

Below is your shopping list

Most parts you can get from GM at a large price. Due, to this most people get their parts from junk yards.

1. One of the main parts the Upper Dash Pad, you can use your stock one. But, youll have to cut a hole in it. Most choose to buy a  new upper dash pad because it is easier and makes a better install.  (the pic is actually the one for the  standard dash pad, the one for  the HUD will have a hole just in front of the left speaker hole.)

2. One of the most important parts. The H.U.D. unit. If your getting this from a yard. First, make sure they have a money back deal. Some are bad. Also, see if you can remove it. As there is also, a cable   (cable to adjuster) on the unit that is on your shopping list that usally get damaged when they are removed haphazard.

 SEE RED OVAL

3. The adjuster, It mounts to the bottom of the Insterment Panel (I/P)Trim. You will need the cable that goes between the HUD and the adjuster (list number 4)

SEE RED OVAL

4.The cable, This is a small cable that is about 12 inchs long and will be attached to either the HUD or the ADJUSTER (hopefully). If it isnt with one of the items above then youll need to get one. You can order this from GM and might be wise if you didnt get one with the above parts. The reason is that with age they become sticky. I actually got one when i went "shopping" and then when the install was done i realized that it stuck some times. So,I got one from GM.

5. The HUD SUPPORT BRAKET, This is a brace that is mounted to the "Dash Skeliton" it holds the HUD up and steady.

6. I/P dash trim, this is not a nessary item. You can cut the stock "non-HUD" I/P trim.  I know that it is possable. But, for the cleaner install go ahead and get the right one.

HOW TO INSTALL THE HUD

                                   Remove

1. Get the following tools together. 1/4 inch ratchet, 4 inch 1/4 extention, 7mm (or 9/32) 1/4 drive socket, philips head screw driver, Zip ties (many sizes)

2. Remove the upper dash panel. By, opening the glove box and finding the hole on the top side of the glove box.  Remove the 7mm (9/32) screw that is aimed toward the roof. Also, remove the two 7mm (9/32) screws (they could also be philips head) that are through the I/P trim (some years have these some dont)

3. Look for the connector that is under the upper dash pad. It is a a grey/ blue connector. It has 12 pins. Of which only 11 used. part # 12064799. It maybe, in tape or tucked out of the way. SOME CARS are not pre-wired, if you cant find this connector. There will be more work and the following will not work for you (I hope to have a HOW-TO on hard wiring soon)

4. Good you found the wire. Now, remove the wiper switch by removing the philips head screw that goes through the I/P trim to the switch. Unplug the wiper switch and look at the harness for a 6 wire connector that is not connected to anything. The part number is 12064860. If you dont have this connector the HUD cant not be installed as follows. Therefore, check back and ill try to get a page up on HOW-TO hard wire the HUD to a NON-PREWIRED car.

5. Great, you have a car that is prewired! Now, remove the headlight switch in the same manner as you did the wiper switch.

6. Behind both the wiper and headlight switchs there are 2 screws (per a side) remove the 7mm (9/32) screws. After you have removed those, route the headlight and wiper wires back though the I/P trim. Remove the I/P trim.

                                  Installation

1. With all the above done, set the above parts off to the side

2. Get you new parts from previouse page and put them in side the car with you and the tools

3. Get the HUD BRACKET, and place it on top of the dash skeleton, just behind the the insterment cluster. Where the base of it sould line up with a couple of holes in the dash. (some cars have the clips there others wont) if you have them screw them in with 7mm screws. IF you dont have the clips, take out the ZIP TIES and tie the bracket to the dash with them. (make sure it isnt loose)

4. Install the new I/P trim with the (4) 7 mm screws. Route the wires through the holes.

5. Align the ADJUSTER to the underside of the wiper switch housing. Routeing the cable through the I/P trim and to the HUD bracket. Then connect the electrical connector to the ADJUSTER/ DIMMER.

6. Install the wiper and headlight switchs.

7. Install the new upper dash peice. Route the cable through the HUD hole.

8. Now install the HUD, attaching the adjuster cable to the HUD. Also, connect the HUD electrical connector. Then, install the (2) 7mm screws through the I/P and the HUD bracket to the HUD display.

9. Check to make sure everything is done right and then start the car. And enjoy the GLOW.
