Debbie (McKenna) Permenter
"She was also an amazingly generous person, donating her time, money, and advice to the team. Like Mr. Hunter, she was also controversial. Some folks got along well with her, some didn't. I thought she was a real fire cracker. I always enjoyed spending time at the Magnolia Tea Room (her restaurant)... she'd have us work there as a team to help us earn money. She was a wonderful friend and wound up writing me a letter of recommendation for med school. I learned so much by working with her."
"[She] helped get the club into full gear and single-handedly kept us going for most of the first two years. Someone attempted to start a crew program at Tech almost 10 years earlier but failed. She coordinated fund-raising, coordinated regattas, boat "rental" at regattas, coxed us, rowed with us, employed some of us, and fed most of us when we were hungry. Not too bad for a 5'4", 120lb "chick" (said with the utmost respect Debbie)."
"Without you [Debbie] I am absolutely convinced there would never have been a GaTech Crew."
