| I was first inspired to do this project when my youth group took a trip to Snow Mountain Ranch, Colorado. Upon arriving, I saw the damage done to the forests by the Pine Beetles. I decided to make Louisiana aware that it could happen here as well. When I returned home, I began thinking about ways I could do that. I decided on "Pine Beetle Awarness" for my Gold Award Project. After my idea was approved, I contacted Claire Coco, head of Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center, to set up an exhibit there. My exhibit can be seen when you visit the Nature Center on Bluebonnet Boulevard in Baton Rouge.. To get the word out in other nature centers in our state, I created pamphlets and evaluation sheets then mailed them to multiple parks and other public places. To help keep the project progressing, I gave contact numbers for orgainizations dealing with this epidemic and ways that people could help fight the problem in their own backyards. I plan to do a presentation on my project at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Another girl who was on the trip, Jenna Hisey, will also be making a speech at her church concerning the Pine Beetle problem. This way we can spread the word to more people. I put in over 69 hours of work into my project, earned 3 interst patches (Understanding Yourself and Others, Photography and From Shore to Sea), Express It Studio 2B charm, Studio 4B's Challenge Award, had 93 hours in a leadership capacity and over 40 hours of career related activites. |
