HOW TO TEACH
SOMETHING YOU KNOW TO PEOPLE WHO DON'T

Preparing to do it.....
1. Practice it yourself to refresh your memory.  Consider the age group you're teaching.  Is this too hard?  Too easy?  How about the size of the group?  Will you need someone to help you?

2.  Gather all the equipment you'll need.  Make a list.  Don't forget to think about any special safety precautions (Check SafetyWise):  First Aid Kit?  Rubber bands to keep long hair out of the fire?

3.  If you're teaching a song, check the words and tune in a song book or on a tape to make sure you know it correctly.  Check the number of parts for rounds.  Make sure you know when each part comes in.

Doing it.....
4.  Get the attention of the group.  Smile and act like you're excited about what you're about to teach.

5.  Explain what it is you're going to do--the name, history, why they're learning it, etc.

6.  Ask how many people already know how to do it.  It makes people feel important to raise their hands and say yes!

7.  Demonstrate.  Go all the way through it while others watch and listen.

8.  Step by step, take the whole group through it:  a song--line by line; a game, craft, or skill--step by step.

9.  Let the group practice the whole thing.

10.  Watch the interst of the group.  If they're tired or have taken longer than you expected to learn it, maybe you should stop and finish learning it later.  It's best to STOP while people are still having FUN!

11.  Later, let the group review and practice what they've learned.  Try a game, competition, or an activity that checks how well they have learned the skill.
