About the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Fredericton

The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Fredericton Inc. was created in 1976 to perpetuate an interest in, and make the public aware of, the works of W.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan. It is a charitable, non-profit organization which stages a production each spring at the Playhouse in Fredericton, NB. These main shows are usually one of the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, although since 1988, the Society has undertaken the presentation of a non Gilbert and Sullivan work every third year. Our members come from all walks of life, but they all have two things in common, a love of music and an enjoyment in getting together with others to participate in productions of musical theatre.

Another mainstay of the Society has been the production of a show each autumn These productions usually center around a theme or genre of music and may be either true cabaret variety format, or musical comedy style complete with original plot and characters. These shows allow our members to take a break from the rigors of Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, kick up their heels and try something different.

Occasionally, we have the opportunity to take our shows on the road. In past years we have staged two fall shows and a spring show at the Imperial Theatre in Saint John NB. These include Y'all Come Cabaret, Riverboat Revels, and in the spring of 1996, Pirates of Penzance.

In addition to performers, the Society relies on a host of volunteers to look after the production side of things, from set building and publicity, to producing, accompaniment and stage direction. There is always something for everyone to do.

The current president of the Society is Karen Frampton
