Fredericton 150 Revue
The 1890's Salute to the Telephone
March 30-31, 1998 - The Playhouse, Fredericton, NB
In 1998, the Gilbert and Sullivan Society was invited to participate in a gala show celebrating the 150th anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Fredericton in 1848. The revue featured a decade by decade reflection on the development of the "Celestial City". The Society was commissioned to salute the decade of the 1890's and the spot featured a visit by none other than Queen Victoria herself, who reminisced about her Diamond Jubilee celebration in 1897 as well as her personal fondness for the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. She then conducted the Society choral group in a parody of Gilbert and Sullivan's "Hail Poetry" which saluted the telephone, an invention then beginning to find its way into many Fredericton homes.
