The Phourlorn MotorPlex is comprised of a "convertible" large scale and 2 HO scale facilities under one roof. An 8' by 26' four lane routed track that converts from an Indianapolis style oval to a twisting road course is the main track. In years past, a small 1/4 mile dirt style oval Carl built and a 1/8th mile drag strip were also part of the complex. The later two have been sold to other GSRA members and are in operation as "Rock Hill Speedway" and "Schmidt International Drag-O-Way" respectively now.
The road course originally opened as Phourlorn Motor Speedway (PMS) at an earlier address as a 50' lap length semi-hillclimb in 1992. (Picture #1 below) It was moved in early 1996 and re-opened as an expanded, longer configuration 10 months later. The race course direction was also reversed at that time (to clockwise) and the track was renamed "Carls Point Raceway".(Picture #2 below)
The course design is typical of a true road circuit as it follows changes in area terrain with elevation changes and is fully sceniced with hills, berms, trees, a detailed pit area, grandstands and other relevant items. Many of the detail items are original vintage 60's and early 70's slot car items, used to replicate a typical race course found in the late 60's anywhere in the US where organized races would have occurred.
The construction of the track borrows from an "open grid" model railroad type substructure rather than building tables. This allows for much easier means to achieve the elevation changes and provides far more strength and durability than most others with less weight and mass.
The tracks are controlled by PC based Trakmate system providing a state-of-the-art timing and control system.
The Midol 500 is an annual GSRA event, usually held the Wednesday between Christmas and New Years and is the longest continuously running slot car race in the Midwest since 1992, it's first year.
In 2003, the track was once again moved and a drastic re-design and re-building took place. It reverted back to the original name "Phourlorn Motor Speedway" with the ability to easily convert from a oval to a road course. Race direction was also reverted back to counter-clockwise. (Picture #3 below)
The HO tracks include a 1/8th mile drag strip using Aurora "O" scale track and a 50' MaxTrax road course and are covered in detail on the HO Racing Association of St.Louis (HORA-STL) pages

HO legend Howard Kilgore and his wife Suzi stopped by for the 1999 open house. That's the PM Drag-O-Way behind us and the bearded weirdo is me. Howard and Suzi are the normal ones in the picture!
