GSN can not put up enough runs to down
rival White Chapel |
(AP) - The magic number for the Gentle Shepherd softball team is 10.
It is not the combination of wins and opponents' losses needed to clinch a
league title, however. Instead, it represents the number of runs an
opponent needs to be victorious over "The Kids". Winless in the
previous nine contests in which the other team put at least that many runs
on the scoreboard, this match-up against White Chapel—whom
GSN had knocked out of the post-season last year—would be no
different.
Gentle Shepherd played respectfully through three complete innings—after
which the score was deadlocked at 3. White Chapel would put together a
string of successful innings, however, taking a 10-5 lead after the fifth
frame that would all but put the game out of reach.
GSN was paced
three runs by Bill Steiner and two apiece by both Frank Powell and Michalene
Thompson. Tim Vass went the distance for Gentle Shepherd on the mound.
