Courageous GSN rally falls
just short in extra inning loss to West Middlesex |
(AP) - A five run lead in the final inning is considered by many to be a
very comfortable advantage for a slow-pitch softball game. On Monday
evening, however, "The Kids" almost proved everyone wrong.
GSN would start their comeback from a 4-0 fourth inning hole—having
managed to keep the game reasonably close up to that point. After West
Middlesex garnered 4 in the bottom half of the sixth, however, "The Kids"
found themselves staring down a 9-4 deficit before coming to bat in the
final inning. Jeremiah Thompson would get aboard to start the inning
and things would quickly come together from there. Next, Frank Powell
and Bill Steiner would add base hits before Gary Bonanno also reached base.
After Tim Vass followed and came around to cross home plate, the game was
knotted at 9. GSN's opportunity to add more runs in the inning failed,
though they were able to hold off West Middlesex's attempt to win it
outright in the bottom of the seventh.
Gentle Shepherd attempted to seize the lead and temporary control
of the game in the first extra frame, but the go-ahead run was cut down at
the plate on a Gary Bonanno single to end the eighth. The GSN defense
would stand strong in the bottom of the eighth, giving "The Kids" another
chance at victory. Another opportunity would be squandered in the
ninth inning, though, as Gentle Shepherd stranded runners on first and
second base. West Middlesex would capitalize in the bottom of the
ninth, however, when runners reached second and third with none out. A
sacrifice fly to left would get the winning run home from third for West
Middlesex and bring disappoint to a GSN squad that had valiantly battled
back only to see the game slip away in extra innings.
