GSN opens 2003 season with hard-fought 6-4 victory
(AP) - Gentle Shepherd opened the 2003 Lawrence-Mercer County Church Softball season with a victory Thursday evening, even after it looked like the opposition would run away with the game from the start.
GSN was fortunate enough to escape a base-loaded jam in the 1st inning after an error had led to three quick Neshannock runs.  With things looking like they could only get worse for "The Kids", fill-in shortstop Gary Bonanno's unassisted double-play helped get Gentle Shepherd out of danger.
In the bottom half of the first, GSN came out swinging the bats and answered with three runs to even the game up.  Gentle Shepherd continued to show resiliency on defense by working their way out of another base-loaded situation in the 2nd.  From that point on, the hitting tapered off for both teamswith the score remaining 3-3 until the home half of the fifth.
After a misjudged fly-ball to right field enabled Jeremiah Thompson to cross home plate, Michaleen Thompson (running for Frank Powell) and Gary Bonanno would score to give GSN a 6-3 lead that they would not relinquish.  Neshannock tallied a run in the top of the seventh and were about to bring the tying run to the plate before Tim Vass's running catch in center ended the game and any chance of a final inning rally by the visitors.
On the mound, Rich Thompson walked none and picked up the complete game victory in his GSN debut—who improved to 1-0 for the first time in recent history
