April 2, 2003
And, after a two week break, Star Search is back to take care of some unfinished business!

Concluding tonight will be the Adult Singers and the Comedian. The regular three judges are back (Naomi, Ben and Ahmet) and even LeAnne Rimes has been asked back! So let's get to it!

ADULT SINGER
Chantel Doucette/Freedom Bremner

First Arsenio informs us that Series 1 winner Jake Simpson has a CD coming out called "Star Search winner Jake Simpson". Ooh, someone has put a lot of thought into that one!

Chantel is up first with "I will always love you". Nice voice, she's really into it, although she broke several dishes in my room with a late high note.

Judd: 5 "triumph"
Stein: 4 "superb"
Zappa: 4 "supersonic fox"
Rimes: 4 "powerful voice"
Total: 17

Freedom sings "I love music" by the O'Jays. About halfway through the song, he starts walking through the audience. Is this allowed? In any case he's really good.

Judd: 5 "next big thing"
Stein: 4 "awesomely good"
Zappa: 5 "you're my favourite ham'
Rimes: 4 "great job"
Total: 18

And who has seen their two week wait turn into $100,000? It's a tie!

And the reaction is timeless - Chantelle is excited, Freedom looks worried - and I think I know why... Chatelle takes it in the audience vote.

(gets on soapbox)

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm happy for Chantelle. But maybe we could break the tie in a different way in the finals? It's kinda anti-climactic, because the (previous) leader knows he or she has already lost. Could CBS install some audience keypads perhaps? Audience voting seemed to work well on the old version.

(off soapbox)

Thank you. That is all.

COMEDIAN

Robert Rothstein/Horace H.B. Saunders

In the interest of fairness, Robert Rothstein has been allowed to start fresh - instead, he basically sticks with the same routine: dealing with treadmill racing, friendly cats, and raiding the liquor cabinet. He doesn't seem very enthused, just more frustrated than anything.
Stein: 4 "funny cat joke"
Zappa: 4 "you rock"
Rimes: 4 "funny"
Judd: 4 "an acquired taste"
Total: 16

Horace talks about whispering, smoking, cell phone usage. And he's really funny!

Stein: 5 "new gags about phones"
Zappa: 5 "eating out of the palm of your hand"
Rimes: 5 "love the cell phone joke"
Judd: 5
PERFECT 20!!!

We're running late, so let's cut to the chase - the winner is Horace, by a score of 39-26. With that score, he records the highest point total to date for the series so far!

And now... back to square one... and the start of the third tournament!

JUNIOR SINGER

Paula Prosser, 14, Tonganoxie KS
Jeremy Holder, 14, Philly

In the seventh grade, Paula was very shy, but later she became very outgoing. She sings Leanne Womack's "I hope you dance". The voice is there, but she doesn't seem to have any stage presence - seems very stiff. And at the end...

Arsenio: "What a talented kid! No wonder everyone's doing Talented Kid shows..."

Zappa: 4 "great"
Rimes: 4 "work on your pitch"
Judd: 5 "love the tonality"
Stein: 5 "adorable"
Total: 18

Jeremy used to have low self esteem because people used to tell him he was ugly. He thanks those people because they were his motivators to perform. He sings "I'll be there". He has a nice voice, but there's something missing I feel. But I guess I'm missing something because he gets a standing ovation!

Zappa: 5 "like God was controlling you"
Rimes: 5 "got some soul"
Judd: 4 "delicious"
Stein: 4 "absolutely fabulous"
Total: 18

And back from the commercial, the winner is Jeremy, 35-33.
YOUNG DANCER(S)

"Knucklehead Zoo" (Ronnie 20, Chris 19, Justin 20, Ricky 18, Ben 19) Las Vegas NV
"Triple Threat" (Philip 16, Laura 19, Jeb 20) Fort Worth TX

KZ picked their name because they felt it fit their personality. And they can move, being the break dancers that they are!

Rimes: 5 "love the name"
Judd: 4 "remind me of grandson's slumber party"
Stein: 5 "incredibly original"
Zappa: 5 "need to wear crash helmets!"
Total: 19

Triple Threat are a very close group, very tight knit. Very very upbeat rock style! Very synchronized too!

Rimes: 4 "really entertaining"
Judd: 3 "couple of missteps"
Stein: 5 "even better than the first"
Zappa: 4
Total: 16

Arsenio is back after the ads with the zoo and their threat (rimshot!)... and the zoo will not be caged! They win 33-31.

COMEDIAN, uh, ADULT SINGER

Due to time constraints, there won't be anymore comedians tonight. Maybe next time.

Michael Wastman, 31, Seattle
Layla DaVias, 24, Brooklyn NY

When he was 18, Michael joined the US Army. While in Europe, he realized that he wanted to become a singer. Tonight, he's belting out "Superstitious" by Stevie Wonder. He's got a nice voice, and he sure seems to be enjoying himself!

Judd: 4 "slick... I like it!"
Stein: 4 "loved the falsetto note"
Zappa: 3 "creepy"
Rimes: 3 "made the song your own"
Total: 14

Layla's mom was overprotective, but she didn't mind that. Layla sings "Because you loved me" by Celine Dion. The voice is okay, but it doesn't seem that very special.

Judd: 4 "brimming with talent"
Stein: 3 "great pipes, but flat"
Zappa: 4 "so sweet"
Rimes: 4 "little nervous"
Total: 15

And our final winner of the night is Layla, 32-26. Phew, we're done, and we're back on Friday!

April 4, 2003
Tonight, 8 more people are trying to make the semis! And helping out is tonight's guest judge, the star of "That's so Raven!" and formerly of "The Cosby Show", it's Raven Symone! My word, has she ever grown!

Arsenio comments in the open that he loves the kids they have on the show - except "if they were criminals like on AI we'd get more press". Touche!

JUNIOR SINGER
Victoria Higgins, 9, St. Pauls NC
Luis Figuero-Roig, 13, Philly

Victoria's dad is in the military, so he couldn't make the trip out. She hopes that if she makes the semis, he'll be in the audience! She sings "Almost like being in love" by Natalie Cole. She's very confident on stage, and has a nice voice too! Not really sure about the outfit though.

Judd: 4 "love you"
Stein: 5 "fabulous"
Zappa: 3 "transfixed"
Simone: 5 "hit every note"
Total: 17

Luis is very proud of his heritage, and wants to become a really famous salsa singer! Tonight he belts out "Goodie Goodie". Wow, he's got real neat style, daddy-o! Uses the whole stage. Like a young Ricky Ricardo!

Judd: 5 "goodie goodie for you!"
Stein: 5 "should be on the stage at the MGM Grand"
Zappa: 4 "technically awesome"
Simone: 4 "enjoying myself"
Total: 18

Time out America for you to vote. And before the scores are revealed, Victoria impersonates both Stein and Zappa! Which of course are naturally hilarious. But it doesn't help, as she loses 35-32 to Luis.

YOUNG DANCER
Geena (10) and Mike (13)
Power Club Express: Megan (18), Allie (9), Jamie (17)

Mike had to have surgery on his legs. Geena's the boss of the duo. In any case, they can move, and the majority of their routine is spinning which is quite impressive.

Stein: 3 "not much creativity"
Zappa: 4 "trying to do new things"
Simone: 4 "really good"
Judd: 3 "keep working"
Total: 14

Power Club Express have been practicing their unique style of dancing for two years now. Cartwheels and the splits are in time together! In the air flips! And they'll soon be auditioning for the Fitness America Pageant, I imagine.

Stein: 4 "cheerleaders from outerspace"
Zappa: 4 "super cool"
Simone: 3 "floor routine"
Judd: 4 "like cheerleaders"
Total:15

Get busy America! And you did! You flip-flopped the scores to read Geena and Mike 28, Power Club Express 27.

And before we get to the yuks, we get to see Jake Simpson (Series I winner) perform his new single entitled "I don't know how I got by" by Diane Ward. And it's really nice - buy the CD, okay? And while you're at it, buy "Fallen" by Evanescence. It's gorgeous, and it's been running for two weeks straight in my cd player.

COMEDIAN
David Crowe, 36, Seattle
Tim Northern, 37, Nashville

David's first job in college was that of a tour director. Since then, he's been fired from several jobs in the same field. Dave talks about marrying divorced women, Clinique makeup, and This Old House.

Zappa: 4 "awesome"
Simone: 4
Judd: 4 "odd as Ben Stein"
Stein: 4 "very funny"

When Tim first started comedy in 1993, he gave himself 10 years to get on national tv. Right on schedule, then! He kids about bi-racial marriages, plates in your head, and literacy.

Zappa: 5 "awesome"
Simone: 5 "stomach is killing me"
Judd: 4 "you're twisted"
Stien: 5 "reworked familiar concepts"

Log on to cbs.com and vote away! The winner is Tim, 36-30.

ADULT SINGER
Lisa Mack, 34, Baltimore
Matt Alber, 28, Wichita KS

Lisa was always obsessed with other people thought about her weight - and she wished that she had ignored it and started singing earlier in life! She sings "Lady Marmalade". She's really good! And she has brilliant pronunciation! And she can belt out the high notes, earning her standing ovation!

Simone: 4 "absolutely loved it!"
Judd: 5 "I am so sick of skinny white chicks - I LOVED YOU"
Stein: 5 "completely fabulous"
Zappa: 4 "YESSSSSSSS!"
Total: 18

Matt started out in classical but then slowly moved over to country. Fifteen years ago, he auditioned for star search but didn't get on. Tonight he sings "Somebody like you". He's got a nice voice, but I think the competition's too strong on this night.

Simone: 3
Judd: 4 "you got the talent"
Stein: 3
Zappa: 4 "awesome"
Total: 14

Move on up like the Jeffersons and vote! Time to digitize! Lisa wins 33-24. They'll be back next Friday for the semis! See you Wednesday!

April 9, 2003
Welcome to April 9th. Hope you're alright. Hard to believe, but Star Search has been on for three months now in its newest incarnation. At the top of the show, we're treated to a wonderful collage of the road to securing a spot on Star Search. Safe to say that none of the people shown will be on tv anytime soon. Tonight's guest judge, fresh off her appearances on Dawson's Feud and Clark's Pyramid, and as a celeb on Donny's Pyramid, it's the voice of Peggy Hill, Kathy Najimy!

JUNIOR SINGER
Melissa Mitchell, 12, Anaheim
Maria Raizel, 9, Murrieta CA

Melissa gains confidence by taking care of her baby sister. She sings "Part of your world" from The little Mermaid. Like many a junior singer, she starts weak but builds up near the end, and it sounds a bit forced at times though.
Judd: 3 "well suited for Nickelodeon"
Stein: 4 "loved her"
Zappa: 3 "going to be a supermodel if singing doesn't work out"
Najimy: 3 "my daughter's favourite song"
Total: 13

When Mariah sings, she's joyful and excited but never nervous. She sings "Fame". She has a much more defined voice then most juniors. And she really gets into the song too!

Judd: 4 "giant talent"
Stein: 3 "bit hesistant"
Zappa: 4 "charmed"
Najimy: 3 "do it as long as it's fun for you"
Total: 14

And after a break filled with CBS promos, the winner is declared - and it's Mariah, 30-27.

YOUNG DANCER
"Shockwave" (Jeff 19, Tristan 16, Alison 13, Hayley 14, Ashley 15)
Larissa Fucillo, 17, Lone Tree CO

Shockwave is very happy that they get to show America that clogging isn't just about wooden shoes. They're really good, very much in time.

Stein: 5 "incredibly creative"
Zappa: 4 "great"
Najimy: 5 "loved them almost as much as I love Michael Moore"
Judd: 5 "most cheeseball outfits I've ever seen"
Total: 19

Larissa explains it all by saying that many sacrifices were made for her including relocating the family. She's very concentrated on her skill and it shows. But she's having fun, too!

Stein: 3 "very confident"
Zappa: 5 "adored it"
Najimy: 4 "movement matched emotion"
Judd: 3 "light as a feather"
Total: 15

America, bossa nova over to the voting booth. Shockwave wins, 34-30.

COMEDIAN
Brad Trackman, 31, NYC
Andy Vastola, 34, Brooklyn

Brad got into comedy for a girl and has a strange resemblance to Stuart Pankin. Then she dumped him. He tries to get people to laugh by talking about beautiful women, engagements, and being the third wheel. But he's really kinda drab.

Zappa: 1 "most painful thing I've ever watched"
Najimy: 2 "want to see your real story"
Judd: 1 (lifts up index finger)
Stein: 2 "really have to try to be funny"
Total: 6. Ouch.

Andy for the longest time was delivering pizzas, but he gave it up for comedy. He talks about acknowledgements, new jobs, and stupid voices that men and women give each other. He is slightly less drab than the other guy.

Zappa: 2 "improvement on last guy"
Najimy: 3
Judd: 2 (mocks performer)
Stein: 2 "better than the last one"
Total: 9. Ouch.

If you think these guys are funny, you'll vote. If not, buy Family Guy on DVD. Andy wins, 21-17. Me thinks the other semi-finalist can already punch his ticket to the finals.

ADULT SINGER
Vicci Martinez, 18, Tacoma WA
CasKay, 21, Norfolk VA

Vicci is very sentimental about the gift she's been given. She and her guitar belt out "Come to my window" by Melissa Etheridge. They make a good combo but the guitar seems better.

Najimy: 5
Judd: 4
Stein: 3
Zappa: 5
Total: 17

CasKay found that eating and singing comforted her when she was younger. She sings Tia Marie's "Casanova Brown". She's not bad, but I can't stand her twitching of her lips.

Najimy: 4
Judd: 4
Stein: 3
Zappa: 4
Total: 15

And the winner is Vicci, 33-28, and that's it for today! Semi #1 is up next...

April 11, 2003
It's semi-final time! First, we have a flashback to the "non-winners". And tonight, we find country music singer Brad Paisley in the guest chair. We're jam packed tonight, so let us get right to the goods.

JUNIOR SINGER
Jeremy Holder/Luis Figuera-Roig/Mariah Rezell

Jeremy's got a real nice vibe going on tonight. And he nails the high notes like nobody's business!

Judd: 4 "loved you"
Stein: 4 "pulled himself together"
Zappa: 4 "really like you"
Paisley: 4 "great"
Total: 16

Luis and his latin stylings are back. He sings "Why do fools fall in love". Slightly out of place, when compared to last week's performance, but still very good overall. And it's nice to see something slightly different.

Judd: 5 "gonna become Ricky Martin"
Stein: 4
Zappa: 4 "you're so awesome"
Paisley: 4 "you are Wayne Newton"
Total: 17

Maria sings "The Prayer" by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli. It's a nice song, but it just doesn't seem to 100% work tonight.

Judd: 3 "need a lot of practice"
Stein: 5 "really moved me"
Zappa: 4 "so cute"
Paisley: 4 "wonderful"
Total: 16

Ooh, this is going to be close!! Go vote! The first finalist is Luis, with 34. Both of the girls score 29.

YOUNG DANCER
Knucklehead Zoo/Mike&Geena/Shockwave

I like the knuckleheads. The greatest thing about their act is that everyone gets a chance for a solo dance.

Stein: 5 "fantastic"
Zappa: 5 "so totally cool"
Paisley: 5 "like watching The Matrix"
Judd: 5 "bursts of energy"
PERFECT 20!! YAH!!

Mike and Geena are decent tonight, but the problem is that sometimes Mike just seems to be walking around, waiting for something to happen. Furthermore, it's not that original.

Stein: 5 "talented"
Zappa: 3 "amazing stars"
Paisley: 4 "great"
Judd: 3 "keep growing"
Total: 15

The cloggers, Shockwave, are back, and just as good as ever. Better costumes than before!

Stein: 5 "hate the outfits, love the dance"
Zappa: 5
Paisley: 5
Judd: 4
Total: 19

Looks like the two dance groups are going to battle it out for the ticket to the finals. And as an aside, Big Brother 4 is now casting. You could be the next Lisa! The next Marcellas! The next Amy! The next Kent! The next Hardy! The next Chicken George!

Or you could just watch the show and find out that we have a tie. Between Shockwave and Knucklehead Zoo. And I think the Knucklers are done, because Shockwave wins the audience vote and thus the competition.

CBS - are you listening? Let's bring back the audience vote...

COMEDIAN (only two finalists due to news coverage)
Tim Northern/Andy Vastola

Tim talks about meeting David Copperfield, his friend boB, and golfing. Not very politically correct though.
Zappa: 3
Paisley: 5
Judd: 3
Stein: 3 "bit thin"
Total: 14

Andy yaks about disposable cameras, ice cream trucks, and hand signals for keeping in touch. And he's actually decent this time.

Paisley: 3
Judd: 2 (waves bye bye)
Stein: 4 "fantastic improvement"
Zappa: 3 (agrees with Stein)
Total: 13

Well, they're actually both mediocre tonight. But the one who is less so is Tim, who wins 28-27.

ADULT SINGER
Leyla Davias/Lisa Mark/Vicci Martinez

Leyla sings "I'm every woman". She's decent, but to be honest, the presentation is very much in the style of karaoke.

Paisley: 4 "great job"
Judd: 4 "find your own style"
Stein: 4 "very good"
Zappa: 4 "very nervous"
Total: 16

Lisa sings "Believe in yourself" from The Wiz as her fiance watches by satellite in Jamaica. And she's bang on again tonight!! Brilliant!!

Paisley: 5 "amazing"
Judd: 5 "I believe in you"
Stein: 4 "first time was better"
Zappa: 4 "great"
Total: 18

Vicci and her guitar are back, singing Bonnie Raitt's "Love sneaking up on you". Her voice is nice, but I couldn't hear it the first time around.

Paisley: 4
Judd: 4 "couldn't understand your words"
Stein: 4 "good stage presence"
Zappa: 4 "you were fly"
Total: 16

We're having a good night, no blowouts. Arsenio mentions after the break that "standing here with three beautiful women - so you know you're not watching the Masters golf tournament".

And the winner is Lisa, with 33. Hooray! Layla finishes with 27, and Vicci scores 31.

That's all for now, we start the second half next week.

April 16, 2003
Welcome to round two, series three. Remember, you can play the "Naomi Judd home game" at cbs.com. And speaking of Naomi, we are treated to a series of clips called "The Good, The Bad and The Juddly". Nice Naomi, not so nice Naomi, and then "just Naomi". Tonight's guest judge is a singer/songwriter, and his name is Ginuwine - and for the purpose of the recap I'll call him "G", for the sole purpose that otherwise I would misspel his name at least twice.

JUNIOR SINGER

Vanessa Campagna, 10, Beaver Falls PA
Kaitlin Kiyan, 12, Waipahu HI

Vanessa has been involved in basketball for a long time and loves people cheering for her. She sings "Dancing in the street". She's so anxious at the start that she misses a couple of words because the mike is away from her mouth. Her performance is average.

Judd: 5 "playful"
Stein: 4 "voice faltered a bit"
Zappa: 4 "awesome"
G: 4 "love her stage presence"
Total: 17

Kaitlin's family is real fun - she has some foster sisters and brothers. She sings Natalie Cole's "It's only a paper moon". She's got a good voice and she's very animated. She puts on quite a show, and the audience agrees!

Judd: 3 "praiseworthy effort"
Stein: 5 "made it fresh"
Zappa: 4 "jazz hands galore"
G: 4 "love her smile"
Total: 16

And after I realize that Survivor is doing a clip show, we're back and it's a tie - which means that Kaitlin wins due to the fact that she got the better audience score.

YOUNG DANCER
After Arsenio picks a bit at the cloggers from last week, we meet our competitors.

"Legend and Tempo": Jordan Powell and Ronald Evans, both 20.
"RoyalT": Laelle 14, Leah 14, Maria 16, Lauren 15, Sloan-Taylor 14.

Legend and Tempo feel that they both bring something different to the stage. Wow, they're good! Very robotic, but very smooth. And at one point, they're right in front of the judges! At the end, G gets up to clap but Ahmet starts tapping on his leg to remind him to vote! We can now see that a light blinks in front of the judges to remind them to vote and won't stop until they do. Surprisingly, Naomi does not mistake this for a camera flash.

Stein: 5 "fantastic"
Zappa: 5 "Hi sweeties. I thought you were great. I just wanted to stick these (pulls out two $1 bills) in your thongs".
SIDE NOTE: That might be his best line yet.
G: 5 "I need y'all for my tour"
Judd: 4 "loved the animation" (there she goes, spoiling another perfect score! ARGH!)
Total: 19

Like their competitors, RoyalT feel that they each bring something different to the group. I'm not really sure what to say about this group. They dance but it doesn't really seem to be anything new. That is all.

Stein: 5 "energy and imagination"
Zappa: 4 "exotic rock tribal dance"
G: 4 "love the energy"
Judd: 2 "looking for originality"
Total: 15

And after the obligatory Joe Millionaire KFC ad (whose 15 minutes only have a couple of seconds to go), we're back. Glenn hits us with the digits, and Legend & Tempo win 34-29.

COMEDY
Kevin Bozeman, 32, Madison WI
John Heffron, 30, South Lyon MI

Kevin was the youngest of 10 children. But he doesn't have to share the stage with anyone. He talks about being a criminal, getting fired and the KKK.

Zappa: 3 "didn't make me laugh"
G: 3 "made me laugh"
Judd: 3 "meh"
Stein: 3 "extremely weak"
Total: 12

John was pretty shy growing up. He finds it hard to approach women at a bar. His routine includes jokes about marriage, chewing Tums and the healing process.

Zappa: 4 "I'm a fan"
G: 3
Judd: 4 "see you on Saturday morning cartoons"
Stein: 5 "funniest guy we've had in a while"
Total: 16

Who will chuckle into the semis? It's John, 33-22.

ADULT SINGER
Vickie Natale, 22, Brooklyn NY
Ashley Ta'mar Davis, 22, Houston

Currently Vickie teaches music at a junior high school where she provides a save haven for them. She sings "Chain of fools". Really nice voice. Great energy too.

G: 4 "love her voice"
Judd: 5 "brought me up"
Stein: 4 "great voice"
Zappa: 4 "respect you so much for teaching music"
Total: 17

Ashley was discovered by her pre-school teacher in a production of "The Wiz". Tonight she sings "I believe in you and me". She's got a good voice, very silky smooth.

G: 5 "love her voice"
Judd: 5 "just beautiful"
Stein: 4 "unexciting to me"
Zappa: 4 "I loved you"

And the winner is... it's a tie at 33, which means Vickie wins on the American vote.
Just before I go, a format change to announce: there will now be three prelim rounds, three semis, and thus three in each category for the finals.

Gee, do I smell sweeps coming soon???

April 18, 2003
Okay, here it is, straight up: My parents, whom I visited on Easter weekend, have a satellite dish. We had some satellite problems earlier in the evening, but I figured that it wouldn't be a problem, because usually with a dish you can get both western and eastern feeds.

Apparently this was not the case with my parent's dish. So, because I did not see the show, I bring you this slightly abbreviated version of a recap. Many apologies... it wasn't really my fault, you must understand!

Please don't hate me for this...

Tonight's guest judge is country singer Jessica Andrews.

JUNIOR SINGER
Courtney Faith Daniels, 9, Pottstown, Pennsylvania
Sandra Castellanos, 13, Union City, New Jersey

Courtney sang "Respect", and got the respect of everyone - you'll understand when you see the scores!

Judd: 5
Stein: 5 "I cannot believe she has so much poise and so much power at that age!"
Zappa: 5
Andrews: 5
Total: PERFECT 20!!

Sandra followed up Courtney's perfect performance with "You light up my life".

Judd: 4
Stein: 5
Zappa: 4
Andrews: 4
Total: 17

Following the break, Courtney reinforces her perfect score by winning the overall mark, 38-31.

YOUNG DANCER
"St. Louis Hoofers Club" Logan Miller, Samantha Scipio & Ryann Taylor, St. Louis MO
Rachel & Kim Saunders, Minneapolis, MN

The St. Louis Hoofers are a group of tap dancers decked out in nice red suits.

Stein: 4 "I wish they could have gone on for an hour"
Zappa: 5
Andrews: 4
Judd: 4
Total: 17

Rachel and Kim are a pair of identical twins that performed a modern jazz routine.

Stein: 3
Zappa: 4
Andrews: 3
Judd: 3
Total: 13

America gave each act 15 stars, so the Hoofers from St. Louis came out on top!

COMEDIAN
Marc Ryan, Baton Rouge, LA
Roy Wood, Jr., Birmingham, AL

Marc went first and performed a routine based on his family.
Zappa: 4
Andrews: 4
Judd: 4
Stein: 4
Total: 16

Roy was up next and told some jokes related to the field of entertainment.

Zappa: 5
Andrews: 4
Judd: 4 "You've got sideways humor: it just kind of seeps out on the side"
Stein: 5
Total: 18

And after the audience vote, Roy comes out on top with a score of 33-32 over Marc.

ADULT SINGER

Katharine Cue, 15, Miami FL
Reign. Birmingham AL

Katharine was up first and belted out a great rendition of "Power of Love".

Andrews: 3
Judd: 5 "You had a power surge!"
Stein: 3
Zappa: 4
Total: 15

Reign (last name and age unavailable!) then sang "What about love?"

Andrews: 4
Judd: 3
Stein: 2
Zappa: 4
Total: 13

Although Reign was not that far behind, her chance to catch up was gone when she only scored 10 in the audience vote, thus handing the 32-23 win to Katharine.

And that's it for this abbreviated review. I'll be back next Wednesday with something a bit more fuller (and no, not the guy that created American Idol...)

April 23, 2003
Arsenio mentions to Iraqi looters that if they stole a computer, they can vote on-line. In America it's much easier. And tonight we're treated to clips of Ben's voting habits. "Ben There, Said That". Interesting, to say the least.

Tonight's guest judge is singer/producer Brian McKnight. And he gives a wonderful vocal gymnastic routine.

And for your reading pleasure, my good friend Chris Bowman is back for this review. And what are his first words? "I like cheese". Oh dear...

JUNIOR SINGER
Mark Mejia, 10, San Diego CA
Richard Krakowski, 14, Paramus NJ

Marc is in 5th grade and loves spelling. He sings "Never can say goodbye" by Jackson 5. He's suave and smooth with his stage presence.

Here's Chris: "I'm wondering how 10 year olds can relay adult themes in their singing. Great voice though."

Gordon, you're a music guy - what's your take on Chris' comments?

(Gordongram - I like bagels. They go well with cheese. Especially cream cheese. And Lox. Lox is good. I like lox too.)

Judd: 5 "future of showbiz"
Stein: 5 "unbelievable"
Zappa: 5 "awesome"
McKnight: 4 "amazing"
Total: 19

Richard learned of his talents by accident as he was forced to audition for a school play. He sings "Can you feel the love tonight". (Chris laughs, and states that he's Justin Timberlake). Nice voice but he's trying too much to be a popstar.

Judd: 3 "fine voice, real throaty"
Stein: 4 "beautiful voice"
Zappa: 4 "too good competition"
McKnight: 3 "little more training"
Total: 14

Remember, if you vote for Junior Singer, you get Young Dancer free. And you get to keep Mark with a final score of 34-30.

YOUNG DANCER

"Da Crew" Las Vegas
Sudden Impact, Casey 16, John 15, Autumn 17, Alan 18, Utah.

Da Crew is in effect Da Bomb. They're really good and have good moves which are very original.

Stein: 5 "fabulous"
Zappa: 5 "lot of imagination"
McKnight: 5
Judd: 3 "bunch of jumping beans" ("can I change my vote?")
Total: 18

Arsenio: "somewhere, Knucklehead Zoo is sitting around and saying' "I ain't impressed with that!""

Sudden Impact cannot separate their dance from their religion. They've got a style that would fit well on "The Mole". If Ahmad needed fly girls, I suppose. Very secretive.

Stein: 4 "no recession on talent here"
Zappa: 4 "that was HOT!"
McKnight: 4
Judd; 3 "very dramatic"
Total: 15

Arsenio comes back, babbles (Chris: who cares?)

Da Crew wins 36-28. Well deserved!

COMEDIAN
Alonzo Bodden, 40, St. Albans NY
Jamie Lissow, 28, Rochester NY

Alonzo started life fixing stealth fighters. Tonight, he fixes our funny bone with women's thoughts, guarding your mate, dusting, and communications.

Zappa: 3
McKnight: 4 "delivery"
Judd: 3 "liked you"
Stein: 4 "absolutely great"
Total: 15

Jamie started out at the University of Buffalo Law school but gave it up for stand up. He talks about LA hospitals, guidance counsellors, and the paper boy.

Ryan and Chris (at the same time): Meh.

Zappa: 4 "love sorcery jokes"
McKnight: 4 "I don't know..."

At this point, due to CBS being a part of Viacom, and Viacom owns Nickelodeon, and Nickelodeon used to show "You Can't Do That On Television" (made originally one hour from my house!), slime dumped on his head.

Well, no, not really, but wouldn't that be fun anyway?

Judd: 2 "loony"
Stein: 4
Total: 13

After we sort out voting problems, Alonzo wins 29-27.

ADULT SINGER
Tye, 19, Bakersfield CA
Dan Burda, 21, Pittsburgh, PA

Tye has overcome her thoughts of anorexia to make it to Star Search. She sings SOS Band's "Do it tonight". I think she has more style than substance.

McKnight: 3 "uptempo"
Judd: 5 "came out like a stormtrooper"
Stein: 3 "needs to develop"
Zappa: 3 "I thought you were singing to me"
Total: 14

Here's Chris again: "I'd like to rip a page from Simon's book: like a mediocre six flags performance'"

Dan has never had formal training. He sings "Walking in Memphis".

Chris: camera can't follow - they are bouncing too much

Ryan: very countrified, and what's with the fitness America routine? Is he giving ad time to bowflex?

McKnight: 3 "very dramatic"
Judd: 3 "want to see you become a soap opera star"
(Dan: "you have the contacts?")
Stein: 3
Zappa: 3 "sweetie, I love you".
Total: 12

And after all that discussion, Dan pulls it out with the come behind victory, 27-26.

That's all for now, see you Friday for the semis!

April 25, 2003
Okay, since Arsenio is always running late, he encourages us to get right to it. Tonight's guest judges compose half of "B2K", and their names are J-Boog and Raz-B. Okay then.

JUNIOR SINGER
Kaitlyn Kiy'an/Courtney Faith Danies/Marc Mejia

Kaitlyn sings "Waiting for this life to begin". I've never heard this song and frankly I don't want to again!! Her high notes are on track but there's something missing I think.

Judd: 4 "natural born performer"
Stein: 5 "couldn't be better"
Zappa: 4 "so great"
B2K: 4 "excellent but a bit rehearsed". Trust me, these comments will seem nice if you bear in mind what is to come.

Courtney sings "Colors of the wind". I like this song and she does an okay job of it. It seems to lack emotion, though.

Judd: 5 "lush, beautiful alto".
Stein: 5 "astonishing"
Zappa: 5 "owned the song"
B2K: 3 "very very good"
Total: 18

Marc sings "New York New York". It's not bad, but the way that he conducts himself tells me that he belongs on another show in the same time slot (Friday at 8 pm)...

Judd: 5 "no business like show business"
Stein: 4 "went flat"
Zappa: 5 "very strange"
B2K: 5
Total: 19

Time to pledge your stars! And you pledged to Mark (36), Courtney (32) and Kaitlin (30).

YOUNG DANCER
Legend and Tempo/St. Louis hoofers/DaCrew

Legend and Tempo apply well to "Domo Eregatno Mr. Roboto". Their best bit in the whole routine is when the switch their vests as if it were magic!

Stein: 4 "talented"
Zappa: 5 "awesome"
B2K: 5
Judd: 5 "loved it"
Total: 19

The hoofers are good but they seem much slower than they should be. But their choreography is nice.

Stein: 4 "love energy"
Zappa: 4 "energy problems"
B2K: 3 "energy was low"
Judd: 4 "go back to the drawing board"
Total: 15

Da Crew, I swear, would have fit very well on the 80's version of Star Search. And they do well tonight, but not as good as the last time I think.

Stein: 5 "amazing originality"
Zappa: 5 "ultimate"
B2K: 5
Judd: 4 "gymnastics"
Total: 19

Dancing short of time, we get right to the digits... Da Crew wins with 37, Legend and Tempo get 33, and the hoofers are far behind with 26.

COMEDIAN

John Heffron/Roy Wood Jr./Alonzo Bodden

John talks about haircuts, getting hurt, and jumping into the pool.

Zappa: 3 "rough night"
B2K: 1 "very rough night"
Judd: 1 "no tomatoes to throw"
Stein: 3 "pretty funny"
Total: 8

Roy talks about military service, wrestling and his mother.

Zappa: 1 "wah wah wah wahhh" (c'mon CBS, let's give the TPIR losing horns some more use!)
B2K: 1
Judd: 2 "only word I heard was Wrestlemania'"
Stein: 4 "hilarious"
Total: 8

Alonzo talks about viagra for women and women as friends.

Zappa: 3
B2K: 1
Judd: 4 "material bright as jacket"
Stein: 5 "loved first joke"

And they're already congratulating Alonzo, and he wins with 29: the other two get 18 each. Note Roy's wearing that "205" shirt we've seen on AI.

ADULT SINGER

Vicci Natale/Katherine Cue/Dan Burda

Vicci sings "I'm going down". Hopefully not with the ship. Thankfully not, but it's not all there either.

B2K: 5 "pimpin' it"
Judd: 5
Stein: 5 "amazing, can't wait to buy your disc"
Zappa: 5
PERFECT 20!!! Apparently I'm wrong...

Catherine sings Lara Fabian's "I will love again". Bonus points for that then. A bit muffled at the start, but it picks up near the end. She's got a promising career ahead of herself as she's only 15!

B2K: 4 "did good"
Judd: 5
Stein: 5 "fabulous"
Zappa; 5 "exquisite"
Total: 19

Dan sings "Something about the way you look tonight". He seems to be pushing it too much tonight though. And those head movements are a bit too much.

B2K: 3 "very talented - wrong song"
Judd: 4 "much better"
Stein: 4 "absolutely great"
Zappa; 4 "great"
Total: 15

And the last spot goes to .. Vicci, with 35 stars! Catherine gets 31, Dan gets 29.

Normally at this time, we'd be going to the finals, but CBS is testing the waters and putting in another round... so the finals are on May 15th I believe. Cheers, I'm going to get a drink...

April 30, 2003
We're looking for four more semi-finalists. And we see a lovely montage of the judges arguing to start the show. Tonight's guest judge is Billy Gilman, a fourteen year old singer that I've never heard of. Not that it matters, of course.

As you know, the finals for series III are on May 14th... BUT! Friday May 16th brings a tournament of champions!! We're gonna milk this thing for all it's worth! And why not, it's good stuff.

JUNIOR SINGER
Jeannie Marie, 14, Suffern NY
Jill Shackner, 13, Long Island NY

Jeannie had a great relationship with her grand father, but unfortunately he passed away this past year. She sings Avril Lavigne's "I'm with you". Her voice is quite nice, but what's up with the cruddy accompanying? Puts a lot of passion into it, and the audience agrees!

Judd: 4 "prefer your lower register"
Stein: 4 "rocketing into outer space"
Zappa: 4 "charmed"
Gilman: 4 "unbelievable breath control" (Arsenio: that translates into he wants to take you out').
Total:16

Jill, in one word, described herself as "compassionate". Her song is "Someone like you". I don't know why, but I'd like to see less tunes from musicals sung by juniors. You tend to get a certain type of voice - thus the viewers get stuck in a rut. Nevertheless, Jill has a nice voice.

Judd: 3 "remind me of Tinkerbell"
Stein: 4 "extremely magnetic"
Zappa: 3 "crazy talented"
Gilman: 4 "drew me in"
Total:14

Back from the commercial, and the digits dial to Jeannie, 33-26. She's not sufferin' now!

(feel free to add in the Blockbusters Gold Run Losing SFX here...)

YOUNG DANCER

"If you've got a teenager with attitude, buy him a tutu and some dance lessons, you'll change his life." Then Arsenio flicks his fingers in a "you go, girl" kinda way. Audience laughs. Arsenio: "CBS is on the phone with Ed McMahon right now - can you come back?"

Hot Under the Collar, Jeremy 16, Nick 18, Krista 18 Fred Odgaard, 19, Moreno Valley CA

Hot has only been dancing together for a month and this is their first public appearance. Very interesting. Apparently they're going for some sex appeal. Very high energy.

Stein: 5 "fabulous"
Zappa: 5 "It is SO wrong that you're 16 because you're so hot!"
Gilman: 5 "definition"
Judd: 4 "amazing"
Total: 19

Fred's first dance teacher was a mother figure to him. He has a very high energy dance act. Lots of slithering on stage too.

Stein: 4 "creative, athletic"
Zappa: 4 "crazy flexible"
Gilman: 4 "just wrong that you can do that"
Judd: 3
Total: 15

And after the TPIR primetime special teaser, we're back. Hot is still hot as they win, 37-28...

"Hey, that was great, that show on ABC, right?"
"Shut up, Lamas"

COMEDIAN
Kivi Rogers, 34, Los Angeles
Stephanie Blum, 36, Brooklyn NY

Kivi, in his words, is "a product of South Central - where all the good things happen". His routine includes jokes about diversity, answering machines, and his dad. Seemed very short.

Zappa: 3 "Kivi on TV"
Gilman: 4 "flowed"
Judd: 3 "need better material"

Kivi: "I wouldn't take that from a hot Judd!" (audience cheers)
Judd: "That's the funniest line you've said!"
Kivi: "Someone needs to take you on! You only saw 90 seconds, you oughta see me in two minutes!"
Judd: "C'mon!"
Kivi: "Bring it on! Ben Stein, what do you think?"
Stein: 4 "I love answering machines jokes"
Total: 14 Classic!

Stephanie feels that motherhood has helped her comedy routine. Her jokes deal with her three year old son, comas, baby vegetarians and the ER.

Zappa: 5 "dark and perfect"
Gilman: 5 "excellent"
Judd: 4 "timing"
Stein: 5 "genius"
Total: 19

And Stephanie wins, 35-28.

ADULT SINGER

Rissi Palmer, 21, St. Louis MO
Darcie Miner, 19, Harrisburg PA

Rissi hopes she will become the first African-American women to become a country superstar. She sings "Where your road leads you". Her voice is quite and she plays well to the camera.

Gilman: 4
Judd: 4 "welcome"
Stein: 4 "great voice"
Zappa: 4 "make the world like country music"
Total: 16

Darcie feels that the world is ready for a new era of female rock. She sings Joe Cocker's "The Letter". Her voice is nice but it sounds quite muffled at times.

Gillman: 5 "got the goods"
Judd: 4 "originality"
Stein: 5 "major star"
Zappa: 5
Total: 19

Winner is ... a tie... and that means...

Stein (yelling): "that means Rissi won!"

See CBS, I'm not the ONLY ONE WHO HAS FIGURED THAT OUT!!!

That is all.

May 2, 2003
Arsenio starts the show by saying that he's very close to being fired by CBS - so let's be nice to him! Tonight's guest judge is from "Whose line is it anyway" and is one of a handful of INTELLIGENT Celebrity Jeopardy! players, Wayne Brady!

To illustrate the fact that you don't have to win Star Search to kickstart your career, we are shown the stories of CJ Johnson and Loni Love.

CJ Johnson caught the attention of Justin Timberlake one night when he was watching Star Search. CJ was on during series one, and is now working with recent judge Brian McKnight!

Loni Love, runner up in the comedy category in series I, has done very well for herself since the show. She now has an agent and a manager, performed at the prestigious HBO comedy festival and won best stand-up, and was on Killborn.

The moral of the story? There's hope for Al Gore.

(Gordongram - No, there most certainly isn't)

JUNIOR SINGER
Courtney Zahn, 10, Beachwood NJ
Tony Oller, 12, Houston TX

Courtney loves to play soccer and her assertiveness there also translates to the stage. She sings "Cabaret". Good fluid voice and she nails the high notes!

Judd: 5 "strong voice"
Stein: 5 "I can see you on broadway"
Zappa: 4 "huge voice"
Brady: 4 "absolutely incredible"
Total: 18

Tony was adopted when he was three days old and feels that he is special. He sings Billy Gillman's "I think she likes me". Good job, although at times it's more style than substance.

Judd: 5 "too cute"
Stein: 5 "best country singer we've had"
Zappa: 4 "bad to the bone"
Brady: 3 "great package"
Total: 17

After America tries to vote by ATM, we're back. Courtney wins, 35-32.

YOUNG DANCER
Freestyle, Randy 16, Tasha 19, Bethany 19
Candace Rodriguez (16) and Brandon Brant (13)

Freestyle has a variety of influences, including Janet Jackson. And apparently their outfits are straight out of the Adidas school for girls. Their act is so-so.

Stein: 4 "group was very good"
Zappa: 4 "all great"
Brady: 4 "absolutely great"
Judd: 3 "guys were breathing heavily"
Total: 15

Candace and Brandon have developed a great friendship since becoming partners. Their style is more of a classic nature.

Stein: 3 "like a ballet school recital"
Zappa: 3 "didn't hit all the moves"
Brady: 5 "level of precision"
Judd: 5 "elegant"
Total: 16

After the break, Candace and Brandon win overwhelmingly, 35-25.

COMEDIAN
Vincent Durham, 37, Binghamton NY
Tracey MacDonald, 26, Halifax Nova Scotia (yeah!)

Vincent was unhappy working 9 to 5 so he gave it all up for stand up. His routine includes funnies such as: duck choices, Antiques Roadshow, slavery and adoption.

Zappa: 4 "good"
Brady: 3 "covered all the bases"
Judd: 4 "fresh material"
Stein: 5 "perfect"
Total: 16

Tracey loves comedy but she wishes she was taller. She makes us laugh with jokes about fancy coffees, drugstores, shopping and e-mail.

Zappa: 5
Brady: 3
Judd: 5 "huge laughs"
Stein: 5 "our best comedy night ever!"
Total: 18

Who gets your vote, America? Tracey wins, 36-29, and she's stunned!

ADULT SINGER
Ellis Taylor, 31, Kansas City MO
Shaina Steitz, 17, Ridgefield NJ

Ellis changed his musical content in the last couple of years because he wasn't happy with it. He sings Brian McKnight's "One last cry". He's got a really nice voice, and a good song choice to boot.

Brady: 2 "sorry"
Judd: 3 "love your attitude"
Stein: 4 "haunting"
Zappa: 2 "not your night"
Total: 11

Shaina wrote a song about her dad after he passed away a couple of years ago. She's also the student of game show ezboard member SonicWhammy! She sings Faith Hill's "What's in it for me". Very nice natural voice. Very comfortable on stage - great presence.

Brady: 3 "great voice"
Judd: 3 "keep working"
Stein: 3 "super"
Zappa: 4 "loved it"
Total: 13

Last chance to vote, America! And your choice was Shaina, 27-22. We'll see you next Wednesday for the final quarterfinal, then it's onto the last semi-final, the series final, and the battle of champions!!

May 2, 2003
Remember... battle of the champions is on May 16th. And here's some clues for today's guest judge...

- Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat
- Variety show
- Dick Clark's former show

'Things associated with Donny Osmond'! And he's our guest judge. Can't you see a theme already...

JUNIOR SINGER

Joey Pearson, 11, Encinitas CA
Alex, 10, Allen TX (whose name is derived from her hometown, OBVIOUSLY)

All Joey's life, he's stood for animals. He would like to speak out for animal rights if he were to turn professional. He sings 'Living for the city'. Joey sings well but his head seems to twitch quite a lot - maybe he's nervous?

Judd: 4 'wonderful'
Stein: 5 'you totally owned it'
Zappa: 4 'you are so good'
Osmond: 5 'soulful voice'
Total: 18

Alex has no last name and she loves school. She sings 'Sk8r Boi' by Avril Lavigne. You can't help but sing along. She does a good job but this song is not really suited to this type of program. Me thinks she will get grilled.

Judd: 4 'girls just wanna have fun'
Stein: 4 'what are they feeding you?
Zappa: 4 'turbo charged energy'
Osmond: 4 'stage presence was great'
Total: 16

Apparently not. What does the east coast audience think? 35-29 for Joey.

YOUNG DANCER
Brent Borbon (19) and Melissa Elaine Blanco (16)
3One4: Ryan (18), Sam (15), Josh (18), Mike (18).

Brent and Melissa have been dancing together for about 3 years. They're ballroom dancers and hope to one day represent the U.S. at the Olympics. They're very good - on target every step of the way.

Stein: 4 'made it better'
Zappa: 4 'fast talking feet'
Osmond: 4 'you can swing those hips'
Judd: 5 'a gold medal'
Total:17

3One4 has been dancing together for two years, but against each other for 10 years. They do a lot of uptempo movements but it doesn't seem terribly interesting.

Stein: 4 'seen it before'
Zappa: 5 'not original enough'
Osmond: 3 'good'
Judd: 3 'back to the drawing board'
Total: 14

Following the break, where I realize that CBS spoils most of TPIRMDS, Brent and Melissa win by a score of 34-26.

Now... to some of our Alumni...

Jake Simpson (adult singer series one) is living a great life now that he's put out his first solo album. Tiffany Evans (junior singer series one) was living with her family in a van before the show, and now they're in a nice house. She's since been on Leno and Oprah, and will star in a movie based on her rags to riches story.

COMEDIAN
Butch Bradley, 29, Atlantic City NJ
Peter Berman, 36, Farmingham MA

Butch likes his nickname and feels it works for his comedic stylings. He talks about Dubya and flying.

Zappa: 5 'that was funny'
Osmond: 5 'marco polo line'
Judd: 4 'cracked me up'
Stein: 5 'very original'
Total: 19

Peter's dad died last year but wasn't a big communicator like he is. Topics in the routine include his plane flight, Bill Gates, the lotto, and finding money in your pants.

Zappa: 4 'you are funny'
Osmond: 4 'very clever'
Judd: 3 'stale nut'
Stein: 4 'really funny'
Total: 15
Our winner? Butch, 36-28.

ADULT SINGER
Les Richardson, 23, White Salmon WA
Ana-Alicia Garza, 19, San Angelo TX

When he was 18, Les moved to Nashville. However, after a year, he moved back because he wasn't focused enough. He sings 'Sweet Home Alabama'. And does a real good job with it. Seems very natural too.

Osmond: 5
Judd: 4 'made me homesick'
Stein: 3
Zappa: 4 'Donny and Marie combined'
Total: 16

Ana didn't start singing until she got a karaoke machine. She sings 'All by myself'. She seems to have too much emotion and not enough oomph.

Osmond: 5
Judd: 5
Stein: 3 'voice wasn't strong enough'
Zappa: 5 'so awesome'
Total: 18

Sing your way to a vote... and the public chose Les as their favourite singer, 32-31.

And now, we're in the home stretch...

May 9, 2003
We don't have much time, but I am allowed to tell you that tonight's guest judge is actor and rapper Ice-T. He likes a mean cappuccino.

JUNIOR SINGER
Jeannie Marie/Courtney Zahn/Joey Pearson

Jeannie sings 'I get lost in your eyes' by Debbie Gibson, and frankly, she looks like her too. And she has a strong performance tonight, save for some cracking on high notes.

Judd: 4 'try Joni Mitchell'
Stein: 4 'very personal'
Zappa: 4 'really comfortable'
Ice-T: 5
Total: 17

'Rock a bye your baby' is Courtney's choice. And it's good, but I think she still has to wait for her voice to mature a bit. Of course, what do I know?

Judd: 5 'don't join a beauty pageant'
Stein: 5 'knocked my eyes out'
Zappa: 5 'loved it SO much'
Ice-T: 5 'whole lot of woman'
PERFECT 20!

See? I know nothing! (Please limit your comments, Gordon...) (Gordongram - Maybe if she was singing on the Funhouse Obstacle Course, you would appreciate her talent a bit more...)

Joey says that if he wins he'll donate to the humane society - therefore Bob Barker's vote is sewed up. He sings Phil Collins' 'Against all odds'. He's got a nice fluid voice, and a lot of passion.

Judd: 5 'we have America's Most Talented Kids on this show'....

(Mario Lopez and Lance Bass enter)
Mario: Excuse me Juddy, don't steal our slogan!
Judd: Why not? You've been canceled!
Lance: I'm having the weirdest dj vu...
Mario: Bass! She's right. Let's get out of here before she gives us one star.
(Mario and Lance exit)

*This play brought to you by the Ryan Vickers Playwriting Society. If they'd open up The Mole to Canadians, then nobody would be subjected to my vignettes. And they let me teach, too... (Gordongram - all of the network people know that you teach - and that's probably one of the reasons why most of these shows don't allow Canadians...)

Stein: 4 'fabulous'
Zappa: 5 'never thought I'd see Ice-T karaoking to you'
Ice-T: 4
Total: 18

This is anybody's game. And then it becomes Courtney's. She has 37, Joey 32, Jeannie 30.

YOUNG DANCER
Hot under the collar/Candace & Brendan/Brent & Melissa

'Hot' are more supercharged than ever. It's pretty much non-stop for most of their routine.

Stein: 5 'American stardom'
Zappa: 4 'got me shaking in my boots'
Ice-T: 4 'just for the smiles'
Judd: 4 'got your mojo working'
Total: 17

Candace and Brendan are involved in a nice routine, but for the bulk of the first part, they're far apart on the stage. Odd.

Stein: 4 'very creative'
Zappa: 5 'so great'
Ice-T: 5 'really got talent'
Judd: 5 'acted like a unit'
Total:19

Brent and Melissa seem to be on their 'A' game tonight, and like the previous act, they are very fluid.

Stein: 5 'amazingly creative'
Zappa; 4 'smoking hot'
Ice-T: 4 'incredible'
Judd: 5 'use their bodies to talk'
Total: 18

Another close one! But Candace and Brendan pull it out with 35, to Brent and Melissa's 34, and Hot's 30.
COMEDIAN
Stephanie Blum/Tracey MacDonald/Butch Bradley

Stephanie talks about breast feeding and motivational calendars, amongst other things. She's funny.

Zappa: 4 'great'
Ice-T: 4 'the ho joke'
Judd: 4 'humour in raising kids'
Stein: 4 'hilariously creative'
Total: 16

Tracey yaks about college and pregnancy ('I had a test for college the other day: if the strip turns blue, I get to go back!) She's really really funny!

Zappa: 4 'I loved ya'
Ice-T: 5 'I laughed at every joke'
Judd: 5 'I laughed'
Stein: 4 'I laughed my head off'
Total: 18

Wow! Butch is on Star Search too? Double duty with Survivor? (checks notes). Oh, wait, you mean there's a different Butch? My bad. This one's talking about bunk beds and monkey bars.

Zappa: 4 'loved the body animation'
Ice-T: 4 'lot of stage presence'
Judd: 3 'shooting blanks'
Stein: 3 'fell a little flat'
Total: 14

And moving on is... Tracey, with 34! And the other two ponder their 28 while Tracey goes into shock.

ADULT SINGER
Rissi Palmer/Shayna Steiz/Les Richardson

'There is no Arizona' is Rissi's song choice. And it's good - a step up from the last time.

Ice-T: 5 'you sang country music girl'
Judd: 5 'this is good music'
Stein: 3 'not country to me'
Zappa; 5 'you are the best'
Total: 18

Shayna sings 'Black Velvet' by Alannah Myles. Wins points from me! And it's a very good rendition.

Ice-T: 4 'let's see your projection'
Judd: 3 'always tomorrow'
Stein: 4 'fantastically better than last time'
Zappa: 4
Total: 15

Les is back from Wednesday. He sings 'Drift Away'. He sings well, but there's so little guitar playing on his part that it seems like an after thought.

Ice-T: 4
Judd: 5
Stein: 3
Zappa: 4
Total: 16

Winner goes onto the finals, and it's Rissi with 32! Les scores 30; Shaina finishes with 28.

Onto the finals we go!

May 14, 2003
It's time for the series three finale! Winners take home $100,000 and a ticket to Friday's battle of the champions.

Guest judge: from Celebrity Mole Hawaii, it's Kathy Griffin!

Hmm... let's see

MOLE CELEBS ON STAR SEARCH COLLECTOR CARDS

Stephen Baldwin - need him
Erik von Detten - need him
Corbin Bersen - need him
Kathy Griffin - got her
Frederique van der Mole - need her
Kim Coles - got her
Michael Boatman - need him.

2 out of 7. It's getting there.

(Gordongram - Why you need Stephen Baldwin is beyond me. Those wacky Canadians...)

JUNIOR SINGER
Luis Figuero-Roy/Mark Mejia/Courtney Zahn

Luis sings "You are the sunshine of my life". Me thinks Stevie Wonder is not suited to his style though. At one point, he even croons in front of Naomi!

Judd: 5 "suave, styling"
Stein: 4 "came out like gangbusters"
Zappa: 4 "great"
Griffin: 4 "adorable outfit"
Total: 17

Mark sings "I want you back" by the Jackson 5. Not a big fan of his voice, though, but I'll give him credit though, he can hit the high notes! And he gets a standing ovation.

Judd: 5 "giant talent"
Stein: 5 "Jackson 5 all by himself"
Zappa: 5 "falling'"
Griffin: 5 "no parties at Wonderland!"
PERFECT 20!

Courtney sings "Johnny One-Note". She sings well, but I'll continue my dislike of musical based songs chosen by junior singers. But boy, can she hit that one note!

Judd: 4 "animated"
Stein: 5 "moving"
Zappa: 5 "bow to you"
Griffin: 4 "broadway calling; it's for you"
Total: 18.

Wow, Kathy is actually calm tonight. Must be taking some of Naomi's meds.

And the $100,000 winner is.... Mark, with 38! Courtney has 32, Luis 28.

YOUNG DANCER

Shockwave/Da Crew/Candace and Brandon

Shockwave, the cloggers, are back. And they've outdone themselves on their outfits again. Naomi will be pleased. And it's a great routine to boot.

Stein: 5
Zappa: 4 "X-men of dance"
Griffin: 5 "clogging meets space"
Judd: 5 "flogged by cloggers"
Total: 19

Da Crew, the breakdancers, return. They enter from the audience, coveralls and all. Their rolls and flips are especially entertaining, but something's missing, I can't quite figure out what...

Stein: 5 "talent and strength"
Zappa: 5 "so crazy"
Griffin: 4 "loved it"
Judd: 4 "loved ya"
Total: 18

Candace and Brandon, the classical dancers, never really left. And their energy is higher than last time, which will bode well.

Stein: 5 "unbelievably great recital"
Zappa: 5 "amazing"
Griffin: 5 "great"
Judd: 5 "spiritual experience"
PERFECT 20!!

As one of my accounting students say, "That's tight, Mr. Vickers!" And indeed it is... but the win is squeezed out by Candace and Brandon, with 36! Shockwave 34, Da Crew 31.

Kudos need to be given C&B. They started so-so in their prelims and then took it to a new level in the finals.

COMEDIAN
Tim Northern/Alonzo Boden/Tracey MacDonald

Tim talks about his mother, memory, memory, Siamese twins, and memory. His jokes are really a bunch of groaners.

Zappa: 4 "loved the corny humor"
Griffin: 3 "not original"
Judd: 5 "cerebral humor"
Stein: 4 "assumes audience has brain"
Total: 16

WAAAIIITTT A MINUTE!!! (checks copy....) NAOMI GAVE A 5 TO A COMIC!!!

Sign number #457 the apocalypse is upon us.

Alonzo talks about camping, ferries, Greenland, hockey and golf.

Zappa: 4 "I adore the golf comment"
Griffin: 3 "little nervous"
Judd: 4 "jokes paid off"
Stein: 5 "totally unafraid"
Total: 16

Tracey talks about her Dad, her twin sister, triatheletes, and I'm practically crying with laughter!!

Zappa: 5 "charmed me"
Griffin: 4 "little nervous"
Judd: 4 "real deal"
Stein: 4 "great and original"
Total: 17

This is tight!! But who pulls it out... It's Tracey! She scores 34, Alonzo 29, Tim 28. The runners-up receive the star search Frisbee. And she's bawling... and OH CANADA!! How sweet it is.

ADULT SINGER

Lisa Mack/Vickie Natale/Rissi Palmer

Lisa sings "It's Raining men". Not as good as her interpretation of Lady Marmalade, but still great!!

Griffin: 5
Judd: 5 "deluxe diva!"
Stein: 5 "filled with talent"
Zappa: 5 "damn, baby, you're so fine!"
PERFECT 20!!

Vickie sings "Saving all my love for you". She sings well, but it's lacking a bit. But she nails the last bit!

Griffin: 5 "fantastic"
Judd: 5 "a singer's singer"
Stein: 5 "raining talent tonight"
Zappa: 5 "I love you"
PERFECT 20!!

"To be with you" is Rissi's choice, and like the others, it's very well done! Might we have perfect twenties across the board??

Griffin: 4 "loved it" (no perfect, I guess)
Judd: 4 "hope country music embraces you"
Stein: 4 "awesomely good"
Zappa: 5
Total: 17

And the three get together to sing a "Star Search" melody. But the winner is... Vicki! With 36! Lisa gets 34, Rissi finishes with 29.

Vicki grabs the mike to say:

"To all my students: your dreams can come true. Mine just did."

I'll leave it at that. Series finale is on Friday.

May 16, 2003
Battle of the Champions!

My predictions for the evening?
Junior Singer - Tiffany Evans
Dancer - Candace and Brandon
Comedian - Tracey MacDonald
Singer - Jake Simpson

Guest judge: Snoop Doggy Dog.

If he were here - but he's nowhere to be found! Further proof that the show is live! So scores will be out of 30 tonight - 15 for the audience, 15 for the in-studio judges.

We've given away already over one MILLLLLIIION dollars - let's keep going! Feel free to do your own Dr. Evil voice.

JUNIOR SINGER

Tiffany Evans has gone from poor kid to Star Search champ. David Archuleta has gained tons of confidence. Mark Mejia thinks everything is so cool!

Tiffany sings "Stormy Weather. She has pipes - and I have nothing more to say. Standing ovation.

Judd: 5 "poster child for star search" (and she's crying!)
Stein: 5 "once in a lifetime genius"
Zappa: 5 "I wasn't here the first time you sang, but I'm in awe of you"
PERFECT 15!

David sings Celine Dion's "I surrender". He sings well, but it seems a bit forced. And hey David, if you like singing Celine, I've got another show for you to perform on...

Judd: 5 "watching you is relief"
Stein: 4 "flawless"
Zappa: 5 "you are going to be a rich man"
Total: 14

Mark, who entered a new tax brackets two days ago, sings a Jackson 5 tune. And it's well suited to him. Great stage presence. Standing ovation.

Judd: 4 "you're the future"
Stein: 4 "fantastic"
Zappa: 4 "when I grow up, I wanna be you"
Total: 12

One of these kids is gonna be richer. And it's Tiffany! She scores 27, both boys get 23. Well deserved. And she goes and hugs Naomi.

YOUNG DANCER

Remember - only two dance acts because series one had models.

Jon Cruz says the show was the greatest experience. Candace and Brandon still can't believe they won.

Jon is plain amazing. His breakdancing is phenomenal... and he ends with a one handed handstand on the judges table, and everyone is pleasantly shocked! I may need to change my prediction.

Stein: 5
Zappa: 5
Judd: 5
PERFECT 15!

Candace and Brandon haven't lost any style in the last two days. They're still brilliant.

Stein: 5
Zappa: 5
Judd: 5
PERFECT 15!

We're back, still no guest judge. But dancing away with another 100 grand is Jon! Final score is 28-26.

Jon's final quote: Everything's possible. Remember that.

COMEDIANS

John Roy feels that his act is now open to a wider audience. H.B. Saunders was able to help out his parents when he won. Tracey MacDonald, the pride of Halifax Nova Scotia, was told by a receptionist at CBS that women comics aren't funny. She proved them wrong!

John goes for the cash by discussing Magnum PI, white people trying too hard, Turkish people.

Zappa: 4
Judd: 4 "you use real life circumstances"
Stein: 4 "wholesome"
Total: 12

H.B. battles for the moolah by joking about his wardrobe, his mother, shopping, and illegal cable.

Zappa: 3
Judd: 3 "make me smile"
Stein: 4
Total: 10

Tracey, who has performed on the last four shows (prelim, semi-final, final, battle), talks about Dr. Phil, Los Angeles, dating and breast exams.

Zappa: 5 "funniest!"
Judd: 4 "feel bad laughing at your misery"
Stein: 4 "acutely funny"
Total: 13

Who will laugh all the way to the bank - again?

TRACEY!!! YIPPEE!! With 26! John gets 20, Horace gets 19! I thank everyone for voting for her. I've gotta see her in person if she comes to Toronto!

Last words for Tracey: "I'm coming to America!"

ADULT SINGER

Jake Simpson's life has changed since he won - and apparently, so has his hair (now it looks like Nick Carter's). Chantele Doucette has always had support from her mom. Vickie Natael wants her students to work hard.

Jake sings Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground". He's much more active than usual, I must say! But great as always - standing ovation too!

Judd: 5 "hunka hunka burning love"
Stein: 5 "energy! Incredible talent!"
Zappa: 4 "you're so awesome!"
Total: 14

Chantele sings "Son of a preacher man", and she stronger than ever. Such a soulful voice.

Judd: 5 "we testify!"
Stein: 5 "I'm overwhelmed"
Zappa: 5 "halleluah"
PERFECT 15!

Vickie sings "I refuse to be lonely". And remember class, projects are still due on Monday! Such a wonderful voice. Standing ovation.

Judd: 5 "so thrilled to go out on you"
Stein: 5 "glorious"
Zappa: 5 "love the style of your voice"
PERFECT 15!!

And Vickie wins! With 27 starts! Go teachers! Chantele finishes 26, Jake is in third at 23.

Arsenio has a number of thank yous at the end: to everyone that helped him to get the job, all permanent judges (Naomi, Ben, Ahmet, and even Carol Leifer from series one), and everyone who got up on stage during the show's run.

I'd also like to say that it's been a pleasure to do these reviews for the last five months (has it been that long?). I didn't know what to expect but I've really enjoyed it - and amazingly, I did it without cable TV (long story). So thank you for all who have read my columns, I hope you've liked the humor. There's been good acts and acts worthy of the gong show, but they've all had the courage to get up on the stage and face the American public - and Naomi too!

And one more thing - wasn't it nice that there was no guest judge on the series finale? I think it was kind of appropriate. I'll see you on my next project...
