(Gordongram - Yes, I know that Canadian Idol doesn't start until June 9th, and I know that if you live anywhere else except Canada, you won't be able to see the show, but Ryan was kind enough to get me a first-hand experience from somebody who auditioned for the show. This is a great read for all of us who won't be experiencing the Canadian version - but we will in the writings of Ryan Vickers. Have fun!)

Hi Gordon:

I emailed JP, my cousin's fiancee who auditioned for Cdn Idol, and he's given us full approval to reprint this message on the webpage!

I hope you enjoy it, it's a real interesting read!

Cheers,

Ryan :)

-------------

The following was written by JP, who is Ryan's cousin's fiancee, after his Canadian Idol tryout in Calgary:

I don't know if you are all aware, but I auditioned for Canadian Idol. It is a 5 step audition process as follows:

STEP 1 - Audition for a Producer - if they like you, you get a yellow ticket to move on.

STEP 2 - Audition for the Executive Producers, if they like you, you get a blue ticket to move on.

STEP 3 - Audition for the Celebrity judges on the actual show - Sass Jordan, Farley Flex, Jake Gold & Zack Werner. If they like you, you get a gold ticket.

STEP 4 - Toronto Boot Camp - 100+ contestants compete to be a part of the top 36+ - if you get here, you are on the show.

STEP 5 - The Show. (this one is pretty obvious)

So, I made it to Step three, but all along the Producers said I had a great voice but it just wasn't personal enough. When I went before the celebrity judges, they said the same. Ultimately, they said I was too trained and my technique was too good and that's all they could hear. Ultimately, I feel they were looking for more RAW talent. But I made friends with some of the people who did get gold tickets so I will be watching for them on the show - one guy's name is Travis, and he is a country singer, I don't know how good he is, but he will 100% be on the show. To put things in perspective:

STEP 1 - 1500 people auditoned

STEP 2 - roughly 700 people auditioned

STEP 3 - roughly 100 people auditioned

Only 8 people got gold tickets by the end of yesterday. I went on Sunday morning at 5:30am, got home at 8:00pm that night only to return the next two days at 8am and spend both days there until, on Monday at 2pm and on Tuesday at 9pm. A very long process, but I feel validated as a performer. I got some great notes if I want to break into the pop music scene.

Ben Mulroney was there (ed: the host), and we chatted with him through out the day. Tanya, the Canadian Idol fashion correspondent interviewed me a couple of times (not because I was fashion savy) because I was a guy. Jan Arden stopped in for the better part of the day. I chatted with her and got an autograph for Tara. It was really cool just to be hanging out with all these "celebrities" as if they weren't anyone special, just a friend on the corner. The other guy was John Dore, he is too funny, this guy is doing the comedy sections of the show I guess so Tanya was asking contestants to help make him into an idol. There are pics on the site, but it will probably be funnier on video.

No matter what, I have outside validation that I have a good voice, not necessarily for the pop world but for theatre. One judge did say he wasn't sure if I could use it in theatre only because it was so over trained, I ask him though, if he had to wait 72 hours to be judged wouldn't you give it everything you had in order to impress...looks like I gave too much.

Keep checking out the website - they have a photo section, I will probably show up on there sooner or later. www.idol.ctv.ca

Well that's the news. Oh some things you should know:

1) When you go into the room with the celebrity judges, it's not just the four judges, there are about 50 people in there! Stylists, producers, camera men, sound men, too many people, it kind of catches you off guard!

2) You can sing whatever you want for step one and two, but for after you get a blue ticket you are given a list of about 200 songs, half current pop and half Motown, and you are told you must sing one song from this list and the other that you have been singing all along. The step two judge told me to change my songs entirely, because I have a great voice, but bad song choices. (I would agree) So basically, unless you were lucky enough to have your song on the list, or unlucky like me and told to change my songs) you have less than 12 hours to learn two whole new songs, start to finish!

3) After 12 hours of judging I can see why they get cranky - they weren't the nicest when I met them, but I was in hour 11.5!

4) Don't be so quick to judge the crappy people on the show - they are put through the same process, and are made to believe they are good, wouldn't you if you made it to Step 3 and then were humiliated by the judges?!

On day one we all sign a waiver saying Idol has the right to do what they want with anything they videotape. So Keith (from American Idol) was led to believe that after making it through two rounds he must be ok. Not to mention people like me who don't make it, are not always bad, just not what they are looking for...chances are I won't even be aired because Canada would say - "what was wrong with him!?

5) This show will not be like the current American Idol, it will be like the first one, where they took Raw talent and did the show. The one on right now has people like Clay and Kimberly who are just like me - they can sing, but they are not Madonna or Justin Timberlake.

June 16, 2003
Canadian Idol - premiere!

We've heard about it here in Canada for months. 8 cities. 6 time zones. 10,000 + competitors.

It's time for CANADIAN Idol!

(roll titles)

Now, before we start, I need to say that Idol is relatively new to me. I've only seen the second half of the Justin/Kelly finale. In fact, the most I've seen of Idol anywhere was the last two episodes of the original Pop Idol from the UK, which was pure insanity (in a good way).

That being said, let's get to the tape. Your host for the show is eTalk daily's Ben Mulroney.

Our audition cities are Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver, Montreal, Halifax, St. John's (soon to be home to me for a year), Ottawa and Toronto. It's a simple process: get a gold ticket, you're off to the national championships, as it were. Thirty-six lucky people will make it to the TV playdowns. One of them will become the Canadian Idol.

Ben tells us that the number one question he's been asked is: Who are the judges? We've got four.

SASS JORDAN: the artist. She burst onto the Montreal music scene about a dozen years ago, and has gone onto sell millions of albums worldwide. She is also known at my former university as someone who didn't sell a lot of concert tickets. Her greatest hits album is coming out soon. She wanted to do Idol because it's nothing like she's ever done before.

ZACK WERNER: the do-it-all. Started out as a rocker, then entertainment lawyer, now manager. He says Idol is as "pure as it gets". He's brutally honest.

JAKE GOLD: the eye. He was the one that launched the career of a very successful band - The Tragically Hip. He's looking for "that thing".

FARLEY FLEX: the dj/new music crusader. Formerly a manager for Maestro Fresh-Wes, he now spins the tunes at Flow 93.5 Toronto - Canada's only urban radio station. Looking for "God given talent".

We see a collage of the competitors with their reaction to the judges. Some good, some bad.

The roving reporter for CI is John Dore. He's a comic who will interact with our hopefuls at any given moment.

We start with the far western region of Canada:

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA (BC)

2000 Idol hopefuls gathered in typical BC weather - rain - to await their chance. Ben chats with the last person in line. The rules of Canadian Idol thus far tend to be hurry up, wait, sing.

First up is Jentille Viens from Kalenden BC, singing "Fallin'". Nice voice, but Zack doesn't know where she sits. Flex says yes, and so does Sass. Jake gives her the ticket!

James Brescha of Vancouver sings and strip teases at the same time. Judges laugh, but no ticket. Allen Fraser doesn't do A-Ha much justice, although Zack and Sass sing back up. Robbie from Edmonton (Alberta - AB) sounds drugged, but he's having fun and strangely looks like Eddie from USBB1.

Layla Stavroff of Parksville BC is up next. She argues with Zack, but is happy she got to sing in front of Sass. She's not the "flavour" they're looking for. Maybe Vancouver's Ashleigh Ball is? She's got a jazzy hip hop style that's taking her onto Toronto.

After a pre show interview with Ben, Nicole Bliss of Maple Ridge BC enters. Sass doesn't think it's good, the other agree. She cries with her mom.

Following the break, the fire alarm goes off. Is it because of Karen Lee Batten's talent? She hails from Abbotsford BC and will have to postpone her wedding if she makes it through, which she does!

Sass had to go to a gig in Halifax, so she missed some of the tryouts. One of those was David Hurwitz from Vancouver. After singing some showtunes by David, we get to see more showtunes, lyrics on clothing, and even bellydancing. Anything to impress the judges!

Kris Volakaert from Langley BC sings "Born to be wild" very softly. No ticket, but he tried his best. And then we see that show-tune David did indeed advance!

All in all, 14 from Vancouver move on. Next!

CALGARY, ALBERTA (AB)

1400 hopefuls braved a freak April blizzard to tryout. Lots of Tim Horton's coffee (which is pretty much religion up here) to go around.

We hear the story of one friend who came to tryout - having driven and slept through blizzards. Her name is Bebe and she's from Calgary. Flex, Sass and Jake all love her - she's got the gold. Well deserved.

The day continues - with jazzercise, soul, and some charm, the last bit form Sarah Suminson, who works at the dump. Erin Ramsay from Edmonton is loved by all, she moves on.

And guess who stops by: Calgary's Jann Arden! Jann is well known in Canada for her singing and witty personality. She can't believe that they have to sing acapella! One hopeful comes up to hear and says that she has been touched by her songs. Jann asks her if she's been drinking!

The panel invites Jann to sit in on some auditions. Kristine Ebonn's up first. Flex says she's not a singer. Ryan Mulligan of Regina, Saskatchewan has an interesting rendition of "Leaving on a Jet Plane". And please don't ask me about the next person's rendition of "True Colours". Jann then jets off but before she goes she invites Ben for fondue and bowling. Yes, we have our own brand of humour up here.

Back from the break, we hear about Justin Ament from High River AB. He lives on the farm but loves to sing. He sings "O Canada". It's very country, and they love him! He's got the ticket. Jose from Calgary then sings high, Tim sings "Try", and Jeff is a bass' bass!

Phil de Torres from Port Coquitlam BC has the judges "leaning" on him when he sings "Lean on Me" which advances him. Billy from Calgary can't find his mark on the floor but he does vocally - amidst Jake's protests.

9 move on from Calgary. Our final stop tonight?

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA

Or as it's sometimes known "Winterpeg". It's our third stop this evening but actually was the kick-off point back in April. And everyone's trying to keep warm. Hundreds of competitors spontaneously break out into "O Canada"

First up: Tara from Winnipeg. Zack stops her early, because she's "unbelievably good". She moves on! Sass gives her a hug. She then goes to her mom's office building and gives her the great news.

However, Chris, Ernie, Jenna and Glen aren't up to par and are gone.

And then there's Anna Shneider. She sang in Russian. At this point I reach for the vodka. Next is Joel Nickel from Mordan MB. Farley looks stunned. Sass wants to send him on based on looks. Zack thinks no. Farley and Sass agree. Jake wants him to come in and play acoustic guitar, and after that he says that he'd sign him. This leads Zack to say that he regrets saying no, and wants to change his vote. Then Sass does too, then Farley - so he's going to Toronto!

Joel: "They all said no at the beginning... then they changed their votes!"

Let's move onto Rachel Axford and her best friend Joseph Sevillo, both from Winnipeg. They have been singing together for years. But how will they do individually? First up is Joseph. No dice. Then Rachel goes in for her little ditty. The vote is split. They decide to let her sing again to "break the tie" as it were...

And she gets in!

Ooh, during the commercial break, there's a trailer for "From Justin to Kelly". Gee... I can hardly wait...

In our last segment we start with Shinobi, the human beat box. He's good, but this IS a singing competition. One of the last people is Marky Baker from Regina SK. He sings "Let's stick together" and unfortunately he's one of the people that Idol sometimes advances to the celebrities because they think the public will laugh. But really, people like Marky are just trying their best.

Craig Haas is one of the final competitors. He sings "Born to be wild", and after he goes away empty handed, he proclaims that Zack is the "Canadian Simon". Then we see Olivia Winzoko from Beausejour MB. Opinion is split, but at the end it's a no go. Finally, Kailey Hudson of Winnipeg sings "I will survive" - and she does! Her parents greet her and are shocked.

For 18 from Winnipeg, they make the trip east.

Next week: Montreal, St. John's, Halifax.

June 23, 2003
We start episode two in Montreal. Jon, our roving comedian, does port a potty duty, as 1000 or so people braved the cold May weather.

Maria Richard of Alexandria (Ont.), located a half hour from where I used to live, is the first of three people with hats that don't make the grade. Such is not the case for Andrew Leader of Montreal - Farley says his range is wonderful, and he gets his ticket.

Hugo Simard of Montreal and Jonathan Desormaux of St. Laurent aren't really up to par and Ben's voice over makes us wonder how many tickets will be given in the city. Bart Zwolski of Laval sings the Backstreet Boys but isn't making the band! HA! I'm PUNTASTIC!

Daniel Alogbo has a fro that can be seen for miles. He remixes Bob Marley and everyone likes him save Farley, but that's good enough to advance. Audrey Demonontigny of Ste. Julienne only speaks French, but she communicates brilliantly through music. Sass tells her in French that she's going to Toronto and she doesn't believe it! Outside the judge's room, Daniel translates as she speaks to the camera.

Angela Gabot is up next. She calls Montreal home. When she forgets some lyrics, Jake suggests that she leave, but she insists on singing. She gets her chance. Jake tells her that she can't sing. She insists that she should advance, and they still say no. This leads us nicely into a collage of Jake getting mad at potential idols.

Philippe Laurin of Verdun comes in wearing various countries' Idol logos taped on his pants. Zack suggests that he keep watching the shows and not tryout for them. He proceeds then to rip off all the logos.

Clementine Maltabey of Montreal has a sultry voice and gets her ticket (although Zack is sceptical).

We go next to Charlene Ranville of Montreal. Her brother passed away two years ago and has a small stuffed animal that she carries with her to represent his spirit. She does her own version of "Complicated" and it's brilliantly done. Sass loves her voice, and she gets her ticket!

11 overall get the gold from Montreal. Now we continue east to...

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA

Before we get there, the judges sound off on each other. Zack says there's respectfulness between the four. He also says that Sass can relate to the kids. Sass says that Farley is a great guy. Zack says he's not afraid to speak his mind. Farley says Jake "looks for a feeling". Jake says Zack is feisty.

And now we hit Halifax. Jon talks on cell phones and recruits rockettes to keep the crowd entertained. Ben then shows us what auditioners see - from the holding room to the judges.

Gizela Begin of Windsor does an interpretive theatre version of a Shakira song that makes Sass laugh but doesn't get a ticket.

And then there's Justin Ju from Halifax - aka JUJU. The superhero. He sings "Secret agent man", complete with a costume made out of caution tape. No ticket, though. Glen Scott is then hooked on a feeling but the judges aren't hooked on him.

Gary Beals of Cherry Brook has a whole big support group to root him on for his chance at a whole new world. It's really nice, very relaxed. Jake says he didn't understand the words. Sass says "massive yes". He's good to go.

Rachel Comeau of Richibucto, New Brunswick, has made her own song, and tries to teach it to John. She says he's horrible! She enters the room to convince the judges. They like her song. Farley says he's a no. Rachel sings more. Jake says it's not going to work. She leaves, and then comes back for more! Zack encourages her to record the song and tell people the story. Outside, we seen Ben consoling her, and tells her to go hug her husband.

After the break, Ben's at the Citadel, an old fort, and after the cannon shoots signifying lunchtime, it's time for more. Sherisse O'Leary from Halifax starts well, but then belts out a high note like no other. Joe Santorro then is destined for lounge lizard status. Stephanie Hardy of Cape Breton sings Sarah McLaughlin. Zack says she's the best singer he's heard all day. Jake doesn't agree, but Farley and Sass do, so she's off to Toronto.

Ritchie Wilcox has another new style, singing "Two Princes". He stuns the judges and moves on. Kevin Murdock of New Glasgow has a cold - will he have enough voice to advance? He sings "The Rose" and given the situation, it's really nice. And he nails it! We then see him crying on the phone.

13 tickets for Halifax - and now it's time to take the ferry to...

ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND

My home come September.

Matthew Roberts of Mount Pearl is the first, and he's singing a little too high. Melanie Benson of St. John's is second. Zack says she needs to work on her singing. Farley says she's got the components, but needs to take some time.

We are now treated to Jon singing while we see a collage of auditioners first get turned down, then we see some advance.

Jonathan King of St. John's sings a traditional Newfoundland song, and it's really sweet. Zack says he's got "balls in his voice". Jake says he's got presence. And it's yeses all around.

Jon (our roving reporter) takes Jonathan home to share the news with everyone - including Uncle Boo, who's crying. And then they tell everyone on the ham radio! And start a kitchen party! And then he heads back to work!

We then turn to Karla Pilgrim of Roddington who got fired from her coffee show job because of the auditions. Zack says she's magical - and she produced a gold ticket. No problem getting time off work now!

Following the ads, Jon gets "screeched in". This is how you become an honourary Newfie. You have to shoot Screech (alcohol, not Dustin Diamond - RV.), then kiss the cod (that's a fish). Might sound strange, but that's what it is. Jon does it in his own special way.

Jason Pike of Lewisporte has been waiting "for the longest time" to see if he'll advance - and it was worth the wait, as he does!

Kelly Anne Evans of St. John's gives singing lessons. Zack throws up his notepad in disbelief - she's brilliant. He says he'd rather just have her sing the rest of the day. She gets her ticket hands down.

After hundreds of auditions, Jenny Gear of Carbonear is the last to go. And I do mean last. She sings "God bless this child".

Jake says to her "Do you have any idea of how good you are? You're as good as anyone we've seen. We're speechless". Zack's welling up. So is Sass. Farley actually comes out of the judge's room and hug her.

15 people rocked Newfoundland and moved on.

NEXT TIME: The cities that Canadians love to hate: Ottawa and Toronto.

June 25, 2003
Two cities tonight; both in Ontario.

OTTAWA

1100 candidates are campaigning for their shot at Toronto and the top 100. Let's see what our potential MP's (Musical Performers) are up to.

Eric Ledoux of Montreal is first with "Sex Bomb". It's a bomb in the judges' eyes. Then Stephan Peterson of Montreal and Jonathan Shatzky rap - together? And it's a wrap with Farley's resounding NO!

Andrae Ennis from Toronto started a boy band with people he met in the john. Today he pulls a JT (Justin Timberlake - RV.) and sings solo. And he's got the gold!

We now head outside where Jon and Ben are discussing their different experiences growing up in Ottawa. Let's compare, shall we?

Jon: Nudity is how I describe my childhood (complete with baby videos).

Ben: I stood around in a suit and tie and went everywhere with my parents (Ben's dad was Canadian Prime Minister for nine years).

Jon: I played baseball with my buddies.

Ben: I hung around with some funky dudes too (Ben introduces Jon to Jack Layton, leader of the New Democractic Party).

Jon: I went through an awkward phase after the head lice incident.

Ben: I used to get bullied at school... I let George (Bush Sr.) take care of it.

Funny stuff!

Back in the audition room... Tarcisio Tancredi of Ottawa (our first local!) brings lyrics in with him!! And he's gone. Constant Bernard of Rockland sings "Don't let the sun go down on me". He's brilliant, and he's giddy as a schoolgirl, as he's got the gold!

Ryan Malcolm of Kingston starts off by making Zack smile. Jake stops him halfway and requests another song. Which helps, as he advances. Quisha Wint of Toronto is next. Jake says she's too good to say no to!

13 people were lucky enough to move on. And because it got a huge crowd, the rest of the show is dedicated to...

TORONTO

Canada's biggest city had the biggest turnout - almost NINE THOUSAND competitors - more than every other city combined! Spencer McKee of St. Thomas is first up. Zack says he doesn't think he can sing with a clear tone if his life depended on it. Than he says he's kidding. Farley and Sass say yes. And Jake says... YES! Top 100 bound.

And now it's fiesta time with John Ertey. He sings La Bamba. He's from Montreal and doesn't say much, as he only speaks French, Sass tells him "merci beaucoup" (thank you very much), and he's outta there.

This brings up to John Isip of Scarborough whose audition is... um... interesting.

Jewelle Blackman is from Toronto (henceforth known as "T.O."). She plays the violin and sings. This time it's "Natural Woman". And it's a lovely interpretation. Jake reads on her info sheet that she's had a song that she wrote played on Flow, Farley's radio station. He asks her to sing that. Zack says she's a world class singer. She's advancing.

Mikey Bustos of T.O. says "Hello". And it's a treat to listen to. They can't believe how good he is! He can't believe he gets the ticket! He's crying for joy, as he says his goal is to break the Asian music barrier in North American music, and this got him one step closer. I for one hope that he gets his own cd.

We've got our first 17 gold tickets winners. But due to demand (and the neverending line), there's more to come!

Stephanie Ferracane from Woodbridge actually sings so high that it causes the judges to roll their chairs away from her, towards the other end of the large room. So she's a no. Then there's Danny Sebastio. He forgets the lyrics three times, and he joins the ranks of the non ticket holders.

Tyler Done is a star basketball player from London (Ontario). He's going to be headed to the University of Western Ontario - if he's not the Canadian Idol! He has had no formal training. Zack says yes, so does Farley. Sass wants more - and she'll get more, and he moves on!

Matthew Chapman of Unionville has a Ringo Starr haircut, and for some reason, and accent to match. Simone Smullen of Toronto sings "Moon River". Zack says she's butchered one of his favourite songs. They're both gone.

Kristen Hayes of Markham has been patiently waiting three days and sings "I'm like a bird". Jake asks Kristen, who is physically challenged, why she decided to do this, and she says flat out that she loves to sing. She says she's never taken lessons. Jake says that she has the tone and the desire - and you can't keep someone away if they've got the desire. He suggests that she look into some lessons and work at it, and come back and see them again next time. Jake feels that turning Kristen down was the hardest thing he's had to do so far, as he says that she's the bravest one they've seen so far.

After the break, we join Tanya Kim, the style consultant. She says that song selection is key. The most popular songs?

5. I'll be: Edwin McCain.
4. Fallin': Alyshia Keys
3. Any song by Celine Dion
2. At Last by Etta James (no idea on this one)
1. I will survive: Gloria Gaynor.

Back to the auditions. Scotty Newlands of Toronto is cutting Footloose - complete with actions. He doesn't pass - making the Family Feud strike action with his arms, and the sound effect too. But he teaches Ben the dances.

George Scandalis of T.O. might cause a scandal as he belly dances. He gets laughs, but no ticket, and this leads us nicely into a collage of dancing.

Nicole Sinclair of Ajax is next up. She serenades the judges with "God Bless the Child". Jake says she communicates like no one else, and she even gets a hug from Zack!

Another 14 tickets given out - 31 in total so far. How many more?

Enter Jamie Sussman of Toronto, asking "Do you love me?" Zack suggests that she be in a little box so that he can open her up when necessary. He's a yes. So is everyone else. Jake says she's "very expressive".

Jay Edwards of T.O. hopes the judges love his Oasis. Farley says he should be in a rock band - and he'd kill! No ticket, but Jay's happy with the experience. It's a different story for Hetti-Marie Manu of T.O., as she gets a ticket.

Sharon and Mary van den Enden are sisters from Brantford that have been singing together forever. Can they pull off a sister act today? Sharon is first up. She's "ready for love". Farley says yes, Zack says no. Sass is a yes. Jake said she reached him, and she then reaches for her ticket! She says to the panel that the only reason she tried out for the show is that they don't discriminate against chubby people. Farley and everyone else then say not to worry, that she really is pretty. Mary then goes in - and comes out, empty handed. But she's happy for her sister nevertheless.

That's it - 13 more tickets, for a total of 44 (!) in Toronto. Now they'll go up against each other.

But before we go, there's some treats - three extra auditions. Cut to only Sass left on the panel, which means first up is...

ZACK??? He thinks that this might rekindle his music career. He sings Bobby Darrin's "Beyond the sea". He thought trying something new would be a good choice - and he said that it unravelled quickly. Sass thanks him for working so hard, but no ticket. NEXT!

That would be Jake. He decides to go for a tune from "Bye Bye Birdie". Sass says that he wouldn't be a Canadian Idol, but would be her idol. Isn't that nice. NEXT!

Last up is Farley. He says that his right leg was quivering. But she says that she sees something in him - so he gets a ticket! (But not really!)

And that is that! We are treated to a collage of people we didn't see before. Everyone brought their "something" to the floor. And then we have a montage of people singing truly Canadian songs.

So about that top 100, eh? It breaks down like this...

14 - Vancouver
9 - Calgary
18 - Winnipeg
11 - Montreal
13 - Halifax
15 - St. John's
13 - Ottawa
44 - Toronto

So you'll notice that's 137. We've got creative accountants up here, eh?

Oh, and I can't forget the last audition... Jon Dore's. In Calgary. Wearing a cowboy hat, a halter top, and briefs. He sings Mitsou's "Bye Bye Mon Cowboy", and everyone is crying because they're laughing so much. He gets turned down!

NEXT TIME... The top 137 descend of Toronto, sing with Ruben and Clay, and a chunk of them get eliminated.

June 30, 2003
The top 140 or so have arrived in Toronto, but it'll be down to 30 by the end of the show. Let's begin.

(roll titles)

Welcoming our contestants at the Toronto airport is John Dore. He's picking them all up, loading them up in a bus, and then taking them directly to a special performance with Clay and Ruuuuuuben, our American Idol cousins.

The top 100 + join Clay and Ruben to sing "Ain't no stopping us now". Me personally, I've never heard the song before. Can someone fill me in? In any case, they do a good job with it.

Back at the hotel, they check into their room in the Skydome - overlooking the field where the Blue Jays play. I think they like the perks, including their lovely basket of L'Oreal Paris (sponsor) goods. Someone even does John's hair. How nice. Now it's time to move onto...

PHASE ONE: lines of twelve people on stage (for comparison purposes), each get to sing individually.

Zack says that the day will not be easy. Sass tells them to give it their all, while Farley encourages them to "do thy thang".

Toya Lesmond of Ajax starts with a rousing rendition of "I will always love you". Sharon Van Deneden, whose sister didn't make it if you recall, is next, and is very well received by Zack - better than last time, as the flashback shows.

Tyler Hamilton of Edmonton got a warning from Zack last time and he sure did do something about it. Daniel Agolbo of Montreal needs to work on his mike skills - we miss half his song. Billy Klippert of Calgary barely even uses the mike to sing "Lean on Me". Danny Balkwill of Vancouver gets approval from almost everyone.

The first golden ticket holder, Jentille Viens of Kaleden BC chooses "Let it rain", but it's not a fave of Zcak's. Jonathan King, the man that stole our hearts with his traditional Newfoundland style, sings something that's not really suited to him. What would Boo say? Joel Nickel of Morden MB has a good pick with a slightly softer song than others. Nicole Sinclair of Ajax pretty much blows away the competition.

After each group of twelve went, the cuts were made then and there in front of everyone. Some people would step forward, thus creating two lines, one of which would be eliminated. Tough stuff! A day of mixed emotions.

We see Jonathan and Jentille get eliminated. Two best friends from Winnipeg are split - one stays, one goes. For the winners, relief.

PHASE TWO: Learn a song overnight, in groups of three or four.

We're down to ninety. Once groups were picked, back to the hotel. One group takes Jon Dore in, then throws him out.

Flash forward to performances (with piano accompianment). Boy groups are first. Billy, Scott and Ryan debut with a song I've not previously heard. Andre, Jermaine and Tyler have a good thing going with "I cherish you".

Kevin Murdock of New Glasgow NS like his audition, is still sick. So he gets permission to go it alone. A collage of the rest of the guys then follows.

Mikey Bustos of Toronto has previous "boy band" experience that shines through in this phase. Then it's some choreography from another trio, and then a collage of people singing "head over heels".

Following the ads, it's time for the girl groups. The first one sings "Keep me hangin' on" (a personal fave). Ben tells us that the judges were impressed with all the girls.

A due of "Wide open spaces". Another "Hangin' on". Some more "I'll be there". Quality performances all around.

They bring the guys back onto stage first off. Then the cuts come - one by one, their fates are sealed. Kevin of New Glasgow was one - his cold was too much this time. Farley's welling up.

And how about the gals? They seem to take it a bit harder, but everyone takes it in their own way. But the others dodge a bullet. Forty-eight left, but by the end it will only be thirty.

PHASE THREE: Solo. Simple as that.

We start the day with some bad news: Billy Klimpert has lost his voice. He's gone to the doctor. Will he make it back?

Gary Beals of Dartmouth NS and Tyler Hamilton both sing "Sittin' on the dock of the bay" and they're strong performances. Ryan Malcolm of Kingston ON sings next. Then it's Kelly-Anne Evans of St. John's, who sings a wonderful rendition of "Love will lead you back". She's happy with her performance.

Ritchie Wilcox of New Waterford NS is getting stronger day by day. Sass is impressed! Tynisha Goddard of Winnipeg forgets some words, and that may cost her a top 30 spot.

Billy's back, but his singing style isn't being supported by his voice... and he stops midway. Amanda Rae Cross of Toronto has some obvious Celine Dion influences. Andrew Leader of Montreal belts out a classic. Audrey de Montigny of Ste. Julienne QC learns "How do I live" over night, which is quite outstanding because she speaks very little English! And when she forgets some words, she rolls with it! Mark Devigne of Winnipeg also has to make up some lyrics.

Joel Nickel is number 48 of 48, and he's having problems. He says he's sorry, and thanks for everything, as he walks off the stage.

Cut to the judges decisions... and arguments... and talks...

This is it! Time for the top thirty announcements. Two of three holding rooms advance. One will not.

First, a chat with Joel. They tell him that they wish him the best and it's unfortunate what happened.

ROOM ONE

Sass: "You're going on.". Cue celebrations! Hugs! Whatever.

ROOM TWO

Farley: "You guys are going home". One participant takes it hard. Very hard, as she cries for quite a while. Jake consoles her.

ROOM THREE

Zack: "Today was brutal. It's not a happy thing. But some people gotta go. And I'm sorry. But you are all going on". Shocked the hell out of that room, that's for sure!

Now we've picked out the top thirty... time to widdle it down to one!

Next week's performers are announced: umm, wait, there's only nine...

PROBLEM!

It seems that CI is not without its own controversy. It turns out that Tynisha Goddard has been DQ'ed. Contestants need to have a valid visa (as I hear they're going to be making an appearance on American Juniors), which she doesn't. To explain: Tynisha was released from a US detention centre three days before Idol tryouts, after serving a twenty seven month sentence on charges related to drug trafficking.

Tynisha actually called up the producers and "came clean". It's very sad that it happened this way, but I admire her for speaking up. But these are the rules. That being said, she's going to go places musically I do believe. She hopes that she can explain to kids why she got mixed up with the wrong people. But she'll be okay, as she conducts herself very well.

Ben wishes to state as well that Tynisha was NOT dq'ed due to her criminal charges (as she had already served it), but her lack of a valid visa.

I now present to you the final thirty:

July 7, 2003
Canadian Idol: Top 30, Group 1.

Tara, Quisha, Jessica, Kelly-Anne, Danny, Billy, Andrew, Miranda, Candida and Mikey. The first ten of thirty to try to make it to the top ten, here, on Canadian Idol!

(roll titles)

Canada - you can call toll free or text message your vote. The judges are present, but can't decide anything. Joining us tonight is Andrew Craig, the CI pianist.

After Ben makes his way into the idol lounge, we get ready to start the proceedings.

#1: Quisha Wint, 26, Toronto. She feels a Canadian Idol will need integrity, personality, and passion. She sings "Signed Sealed Delivered". Nice way to start the show - good presence.

(Selected comments will be given to each competitor from the judges)

Jake: Good emotion, good tone.
Farley: Not sure the song showcased your talents.

She's happy to have gone first and be able to relax for the next fifty minutes.

#2. Danny Balkwill, 24, Regina. He finds that Stevie Wonder is his inspiration, so he'll sing "All is fair in love". He almost starts with a whisper, but picks up. It seems a tiny bit forced though. Nice job overall.

Sass: I appreciate the use of dynamics - watch your pitch.

Zack: You look good singing it, but your pitch is off.

Danny feels he could've been better, but hopes Canada believes in him.

#3. Kelly-Anne Evans, 26, St. John's, Newfoundland. She teaches music, and is having a chance to do what she loves. She sings "Georgia on my mind". The voice is muffled, it seems a tiny bit pushed, but it's nice. She can really belt out the high notes.

Jake: At times you went a little too far.

Sass: You have the most fantastic voice.

Kelly-Anne feels that what the judges said was legit.

#4: Miranda Walsh, 24, Kitchener, Ontario. She never expected to be a last minute fill in. She sings very softly. Don't get me wrong, it's nice, but it's very low key.

Farley: I would have preferred something more energetic. Zack: I bought into it hook line and sinker.

Miranda's happy with these comments.

#5. Billy Klippert, 24, Calgary. He wanted to be a guitar player but gave it up for singing. He really belts his songs out hard. He sings a Luther Vandross song - the same one he did for his audition. It's done nicely tonight, mainly due to the fact that he keeps the hand movements to a minimum.

Jake: Vast improvement on what I've seen in the past. Sass: Definitely better.

Billy thought the judges weren't ecstatic, but Ben tells him to take what he can get from them.

#6. Jessica David, 19, Scarborough, Ontario. She loves taking musical chances. She couldn't believe that she got a gold ticket even though she was ill the day of her tryout. She seems to have problems with "Love will lead you back". It doesn't have much oomph behind it.

Farley: Wasn't your finest moment.

Zack: It didn't rock me.

Jessica thought the judges were fair, and she's happy.

#7. Mikey Bustos, 22, Toronto. During his audition, he couldn't believe that he got such a positive reaction from the judges. He hopes to become the first mainstream Asian pop star. On this night, he sings "Sometimes when we touch" - a personal fave, and he doesn't let me down.

Sass: You could sing the PHONE BOOK and I would love you.

Zack: It was okay, but can you step up and belt something?

Mikey said it could have been worse, but he's content.

#8. Tara Martel, 20, Winnipeg. When she got her gold ticket, it felt very surreal to her. She hopes to make the top ten - that's her goal. She's got a really nice voice and her notes carry quite well.

Farley: You had difficulties with other parts that weren't the chorus.

Jake: Emotion and projection were there.

#9. Andrew Leader, 26, Montreal. He's loving all the opportunities to better himself. His high notes are really nice, he can belt them out quite well. For some reason, his song seems longer than most.

Jake: Really impressed, you should be proud.

Zack: You rocked that song!

Andrew thanks Canada for watching and he hopes they'll vote for him!

#10: Candida Clauseri, 20, Etobicoke, Ontario. She's chosen "I will always love you" because it evokes memories of her brother who passed away when she was younger. She starts a bit slow, but halfway through she 100% nails it. Seriously. You can see that Jake and Sass are blown away by the camera shot.

Sass: You're a star.

Farley: Very well controlled - very professional.

Ben figures she's so good that she can read her own phone number.

Let's fast forward to the Tuesday night results show...

RESULTS

The results will read as following: name, general opinion from the judges, how Canada voted. Four will move on to the "finalist" stools, but only three of that group will move onto the top ten. Ben first introduces the judges. And then there's a group hug with the contestants, followed by last night's recap. Oh, look here, it's John Dore, the roving reporter. He brings video of the idol's night out in Toronto. We see that they're having a good time, especially when Jon is around.

Here we go! (remember it reads judges/Canada)

Danny: okay/does not advance

Kelly: good/does not advance

Candida: brilliant/advance

Miranda: okay/does not advance

Andrew: good/advance

Jessica: not so good/does not advance

Quisha: okay/does not advance

Mikey: good/advance

Tara: okay/does not advance

Billy: good/advance

So one of Billy, Mikey, Andrew or Candida is going home... who will it be?

First one through is... Candida! She's stunned, and she's also the top vote getter!

Second one through... Mikey! He's equally as stunned, and he looks like he's going to cry. I think.

And finally... Billy! Good old gravely voiced Billy. The second group is next week!

July 14, 2003

Canadian Idol - top thirty, group two.

Richie, Joni, Jennie, Mark, Tyler, Faith, Jermaine, Phoebe, Phil. Who will be the next three to advance?

(roll titles)

Ooh, look, the set has been redecorated! And there's now mikes in the judges' desk. And Ben banters well as always with the judges and Andrew Craig, the piano player.

#1. Phil de Torres, Port Coquitlam BC. His dream is to become the Canadian Idol. He has a nice voice and his choice of a Stevie Wonder song is good.

Sass: Pitch was a bit off.

Farley: A bit "breathy", but good overall.

#2. Faith McMillan, 23, Burlington ON. Zack scared her in the tryouts, but eventually he warmed up to her. She's got very much a "countrified" voice, and this is confirmed by her Trisha Yearwood song choice. Very nice though.

Zack: You have a huge gift.

Jake: The pitch was nice.

She says she loves Zack! And who wouldn't when you get praised like that.

#3. Jermain Maxwell, 25, Toronto. Previously, he felt the judges gave him some good feedback. His voice is very soft. Something is missing for me though.

Zack: It felt at best high school amateur competition.

Sass: Not the greatest performance you've give.

He says he's happy (even though all the male judges ripped into him somewhat.

#4: Joni Rodney, 26, Toronto. Her first audition convinced everyone but Zack. I find first off that she starts off too high. It's okay overall but she pushes too much.

Jake: Really impressed.

Farley: Pleasantly surprised.

She says hello to everyone at the school where she works. I know nothing, apparently.

#5: Marc Devigne, 19, Winnipeg. Marc actually won a local radio competition called "Winnipeg Idol" which enabled him to skip the line-up! He sings "Don't let the sun go down on me". It's really nice, he's got a good voice. He carries the song very well.

Farley: Tremendous potential.

Sass: Good solid performance

He's happy with his performance, and Ben says he's melting hearts already!

#6: Nicole Sinclair, 26, Ajax. She couldn't believe when she got her gold ticket. In singing "Because you loved me", I warm up to her, but I feel that at times she's speaking instead of singing.

Zack: It was very gospel-y, you sing wonderfully.

Jake: You communicated directly to me.

She's fine with the judges' thoughts.

#7: Ritchie Wilcox, New Waterford NS, 23. He started by singing in a TV special with Canadian music legend Rita McNeil in grade four. He entered Idol with the intention to write a newspaper article about it - and the trip hasn't stopped yet! I like his singing: he's not outstanding, but he's consistent.

Zack: You're odd, you're Richie, you're great.

Sass: Something just so appealing.

#8: Jenny Gear, Carbonear, NF, 21. She does what she likes to do and it strikes a chord with viewers. I've liked what she's done before, but tonight I'm not sure about the song choice.

Farley: You sing songs for you.

Jake: Non-melodic.

#9: Tyler Hamilton, 26, Edmonton. He grew up with gospel and blues, and he says he's really energetic. He has the same song as Marc - or Marc's choice is the same as his! Tyler's has a bit more oomph behind it though. Quality stuff. Great finish.

Jake: You are the man! Best by far.

Sass: Welcome to becoming a star.

And he even does kung fu on the way in!

#10: Phoebe - I'm sure that she did something wonderful, but for some reason, my tape cut out. I will however, include judge's comments from the...

RESULTS

The judges are introduced and Zack banters with Ben, and so does Jake...

Jake: Have we told you how wonderful of a host you are?

Ben: Why, no.

Jake: There's a reason for that.

Classic!

Recaps of last night follow... including some comments for Phoebe...

Farley: Your outfit - BLING BLING

Zack: Like a d-list performance from a Vegas hotel.

And guess what? Jon Dore took this group of ten out to a ball game where they sign autographs and sing "Take me out to the ball game" during the seventh inning stretch.

After the break, we see Sharon Lee Williams, the vocal coach, telling us how much she enjoys what she does.

Now, it's time for the voting results. Remember, four move onto the "finalist" stools, then three move onto the top ten. For each competitor, it will read judges' thoughts, then Canada's decision.

Jermain: not so good/does not advance

Tyler: brilliant/advance

Phil: good/does not advance

Marc: good/advance

Faith: really good/does not advance

Nicole: really good/does not advance

Jenny: good/advance

*Jenny is shocked. Ben dubs her "Jenny from the Rock". A note to my friends south of the border: "The Rock" is the nickname for Newfoundland, the province where she lives.

Phoebe: not so good/does not advance

Richie: really good/advance

Joni: really good/does not advance

Out of Tyler, Marc, Jenny and Richie, who will go on?

The first is... Tyler!

The second is... Jenny!

And finally, we have... Richie! (and you can hear a shriek in the background).

Next time: the last group of ten!

July 21, 2003

Canadian Idol - top thirty, last group of ten.

Karen-Lee, Sherry, Toya, Justin, Audre, Tyler, Yvette, Ryan, Sharon, Gary.

Who will be the final three to automatically advance

to the top ten?

(roll titles)

After bantering with the judges, Ben starts the events.

#1. Tyler Done, 17, London ON. He's had a wonderful time so far, and he hopes to continue. He's chose "Three times a lady". Such a raw and untrained voice, so nice.

As always, selected comments are included.

Sass: Terrific, you're wicked

Zack: Wasn't bad - came off as a freshman performance.

Tyler says he was thrilled with his performance.

#2. Yvette Miller, 25, Windsor ON. She's taken a year off from medical school to pursue her singing dreams. She sings "The Prayer" by Andrea Boccelli. Nice voice, but tough to understand sometimes. Kind of crackly on the high notes.

Farley: Not sure that was the best song to showcase your talents.

Jake: Really proud.

She thanks the judges - Ben says it was amazing.

#3: Sherry St. Germain, 21, Winnipeg. She's singing "Chain of fools" because she likes to move around. She's got a nice voice, but it's the movements that find particularly distracting.

Zack: I'm thrilled that there's a real artist in the house.

Farley: That was stunning.

Ben comments that Sherry was under the weather all week, and thinks that singers would like to have what she's got. So Sherry gives it to him, in the form of a FRENCH KISS. In fact she had her hand over his lips. He's stunned in any case.

#4: Justin Ament, High River AB, 23. Justin is a farmer and a musician at the same time. He sings "Amazed". His singing is quite amazing. Very rich voice, very natural.

Sass: Nashville, watch out!

Jake: That was the perfect song for your voice.

Justin says he's trying to stand out from the others as best he can.

#5. Toya Alexis, 23, Ajax, She says the experience has been a blessing, and that singing is therapy for her. She sings "I believe in you and me". Very powerful voice, good song selection. Not a big fan of the extremely high note (but better than Mariah though).

Zack: You sang a couple of notes that were only audible to canines... and the dogs loved it!

Jake: Fan-tas-tic!

Toya starts crying after her performance, she's very touched.

#6. Audr de Montigny, 17, Ste. Julienne PQ. She finds it difficult to express herself in English. She loves to sing, so it doesn't matter what language. She's got a really calm voice, it's very nice and sweet. And you can barely hear her accent! (Not that it matters!)

Sass: The most beautiful emotion comes from you.

Farley: Very well done.

She says she's very happy!

#7. Gary Beals, 20, Cherry Brook NS, he's had a wonderful experience and he wants it real bad. Has a very soulful voice which enables him to hit all the right notes.

Zack: I like the way you sing flat out.

Farley: Your voice is so big.

Ben says he doesn't think Gary is shy any more, as he said previously that he thought he was.

#8. Sharon van den Enden, 21, Brantford. She's a full time student, and she bawled her eyes out when she got her gold ticket. She sings well, but she a lot of "reverb" on the start of her notes.

Jake: That was really good.

Sass: I adore your voice.

She agrees with Zack that she's raw and unpolished.

#9. Ryan Malcolm, Kingston ON, 24. He sings in a band with his dad and his brother. He's singing a U2 song. It's quite nice, although it seems he's trying a bit too hard. He can hit the high notes when required.

Sass: Your tone is amazing!

Zack: You're a really talented singer.

Ryan says he feels good. He went to the same high school as Avril Lavigne (although not at the same time).

#10. Karen-Lee Batten, 23, Abbotsford BC. She's gone from gold ticket to her wedding to the top 30 to her honeymoon. Busy month! She's singing Norah Jones' "Come away with me". Such a smooth, gentle voice. Very natural, good song choice.

Farley: Really nice.

Jake: You could sing anything and I'd listen.

She seems overwhelmed by her performance.

RESULTS

(Please note that some information has been provided by idol.ctv.ca recaps, as when I went out to see the American Idol show, I forgot to set the VCR for Canadian Idol. D'oh!)

Well, the Tuesday night recap show was packed. First, the touring American Idols stopped by to sing "What the world needs now" by Burt Bacharach. And they are given their gold disc to celebrate their compilation CD, plus Clay and Ruuuuuuuuuuben receive awards for their singles.

And by the way, I was at the American Idols Live tour in Toronto. Even though I didn't follow the show, it was still quite well done, clicking in at 2.5 hours of music or so. Although at one point, Clay announced that we had voted three more people through, but didn't say who!!! Bah!

Getting back to the results, here we go... (it reads judges' thoughts/Canada's vote, by the way)

Audr: good/advance

Yvette: okay/does not advance

Justin: very good/does not advance

Toya: brilliant/does not advance

Tyler: okay/advance

Sherry: very good/does not advance

Gary: very good/advance

Karen: very good/advance

Ryan: very good/does not advance

Sharon: very good/does not advance

So, we're down to three of Audr, Tyler, Gary and Karen...

First up is... Audr!

Next is... Gary!

And finally... Karen-Lee!

We then go to break, and when we're back, the wildcard finalists are announced... they are:

Andrew Leader (group one)

Marc Levigne (group two)

Sharon van den Enden (group three)

Toya Alexis (group three)

Ryan Malcolm (group three)

Tyler Done (group three)

Sherry St. Germain (group three)

Kevin Murdock... what???

Kevin, if you'll recall, was gone on phase two during the top 100+ tryouts... but I guess the judges wanted to give him another chance!

That's all for now... Wildcard show is July 28th.

Here were are... second chances for some, the last chance for others!

July 28, 2003
We've got seven competitors tonight.

#1. Toya Alexis. She sings "Try it on my own" and she does a wonderful job as always.

Farley: You have the "look, book and the textbook".
Jake: Probably the best singer we have.

#2. Ryan Malcolm. Singing a Billy Joel song, he is quite good, and his voice shines tonight brighter than it has previously.

Zack: I thought that was you. Very well done.
Farley: Did the skillful things I know that you do.

He's really impressed with Zack's positive comments.

#3. Tyler Done. Sings Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely". Good fluid singing tonight. Very clear, natural, and is smiling tonight (like always).

Jake: Decent tone, didn't have a lot of soul.
Sass: Very sweet tone.

Tyler said no matter what, he's had a great time.

#4. Kevin Murdoch (special invite - didn't make the top 30 though). "Can you feel the love tonight" is his song selection. Bit of a country twang, but not too much.

Sass: You bring this haunted sweetness to everything you sing.
Zack: I was bored - I thought you had more personality when you were sick.

Kevin said he was very nervous but is happy for his performance.

#5. Andrew Leader. He belts out "Me and Mrs. Jones". And he breaks it down. Smooth and steady for the start, but then picks it up for the chorus. Very well done.

Farley: You've got soul coming out of the wazoo.
Zack: You kinda tightened up... but you're supreme.

He seems pleased!

#6. Marc Devigne. He sings Phil Collins' "Against all odds". Very passionate, although by his outfit, he's right out of a Backstreet Boys video. And what about those "creative" lyrics?

Jake: Poetic license with the lyrics? Wasn't bad.
Sass: Pretty good job.

He's also thrilled that Zack compared him to Josh Grobin.

#7. Sharon van den Enden. Singing "A women's worth" she has a nice voice, but still a bit raw. And what's with the hair?

Sass: You have the voice.
Zack: You've got the basic tone.

Sharon says she likes being unpolished!

Let's go right to the...

RESULTS

Quick recap of the first ten minutes: Last night's performances. Judges' names. First nine of the top ten come back out. Recap of them. Ask people who they think will move on. Nobody says themselves! Footage of Jon Dore taking the wildcards to Niagara Falls. And why does he always end up naked?

Here we go... (judges' feelings, then Canada's vote)

Marc: good/does not advance
Toya: excellent/ADVANCE
Ryan: good/ADVANCE
Sharon: good/does not advance
Tyler: okay/ADVANCE
Andrew: excellent/does not advance
Kevin: okay/ADVANCE

The last two were hung for the ad break... and when they got back, Zack was asked what he thought. He said "I'd tell you what I think, but first, this break on Canadian Idol!". Great bit of comedy, that.

So we're down to Kevin, Tyler, Toya, Ryan.

We start by an elimination... and fourth place goes to... Tyler. He thanks people for voting for him.

And then a surprise! There's going to be TWO wildcards!

The first wildcard is... Toya! And the second is... Ryan! (With a look of shock and horror on his face!)

So that's it! Our final 11 are:

Toya Alexis, Ajax ON
Karen-Lee Batten, Abbotsford BC
Gary Beals, Dartmouth NS
Mikey Bustos, Weston ON
Candida Clauseri, Etobicoke ON
Audrey de Montigny, Ste-Julienne QC
Jenny Gear, Carbonear NL
Billy Klippert, Calgary AB
Tyler Hamilton, Edmonton AB
Ryan Malcolm, Kingston ON
Ritchie Wilcox, New Waterford NS

-------------

Ryan's predictions...

It's hard for me to predict any ultimate winners... but here's five people I think that could win the whole lot.

Candida Clauseri: We didn't see much of her during the prelims, but her interpretation of "I will always love you" blew EVERYONE away.

Mikey Bustos: He has a dream to become the first Asian-Canadian pop star. And he can do it. He has been shown to have alot of passion and although he can belt out tunes by people like 'Nsync if he wanted to, he doesn't necessarily fit that mold.

Jenny Gear: I didn't know what to think of her after her top 30 song, but now I see that she picks songs that fit her style more than anyone else. And furthermore, the people on The Rock are very supportive of their girl!

Audrey de Montigny - Such youthful innocence. She should make top three. So, so, adorable. And a wonderful voice.

Toya Alexis - It took me awhile to realize it, but I have seen this woman before. She was on series one of Popstars up here in Canada. She didn't make the band, but she was offered her own contract (which I guess didn't pan out). Mind you, she should make top three as well.

And who will win? Gosh, I don't know. But darn it, I'll support them! Hopefully they won't try to make a movie, though...

August 4, 2003

15,000 dreams. 11 are left. Candida, Billy, Mikey, Richie, Jenny, Tyler, Gary, Audrey, Karen-Lee, Toya and Ryan are still left: who will be the CANADIAN IDOL?

(roll titles)

We've now stated into the first of seven weeks of live shows in Toronto. Phoning for your faves is still free, and that's good, because this week will see three fall by the way side.

The theme for this week's show is "Canadian Hits". Of course we always have our judges Jake Gold, Sass Jordan, Farley Flex, and Zack Werner.

First up is Billy Klippert of Calgary. We see him with his brother and his rock band in his pre-show profile. His choice tonight is Gordon Lightfoot's "If you could read my mind". Good song selection, good job to start off the show.

Jake: I thought that was pretty good.
Farley: I loved it.

Number two is Toya Alexis. She first started singing when she was nine, and personally I hope she NEVER STOPS. She sings "If you asked me to" by Celine Dion. This is a classic Celine song, so I approve. And as she has done in the past, she nails it.

Sass: When they have a lineup of divas, you're there.
Zack: I think you should blow the roof off... be the Toya you can be.

After the break, Jon Dore queries to whether Ben wears boxers or briefs, as it's been a big topic on the message board. Ben doesn't answer, but this will become a running gag.

Number three is Richie Wilcox. He's shown at a reception in Cape Breton. All these people crashed the phone system last week, it would appear. He sings Blue Rodeo's "Bulletproof". It's nice, but it seems a bit too mellow for this night.

Jake: I found it a bit boring.
Sass: You have a lovely aura.

Number four is Karen-Lee Batten. She started singing when she was four... and everyone attests that she's a singing machine! Her song choice is "Black Velvet" by Allanah Myles. I love this song, and she doesn't let me down!

Farley: You really enjoyed performing.
Zack: I really liked that.

Number five is Gary Beals. His community is 100% behind him. His singing started in Sunday school. Tonight he sings "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan. He sings with a mike stand - so he doesn't move around a lot, but that allows everyone to focus on his voice. Which is lovely, of course.

Sass: Smooth, baby, smooth.
Farley: An angelic voice.

Number six is Candida Clauseri. Her dream is to be a successful recording artist. Her mom says she has tremendous passion. She sings Celine Dion's "The power of love". She's got a great voice, but tonight it seems somewhat forced.

Zack: I thought that was really terrible.
Jake: I thought you did a better job in rehearsal... but I'm not worried about you.

Number seven is from my birthplace, and shares my name - it's Ryan Malcolm. One of his old bosses has started up Monday night CI parties. We also see footage of him on another talent show from Ottawa called "Homegrown Caf" (RIP CTV regional programming). He sings Blue Rodeo's "Try", and he's bank on.

Jake: I remember thinking this guy's got it... thank you for making us look so good.
Farley: Mr. Professional!

Number eight is Newfoundland's own Jenny Gear. Her mom says that she's only had one teacher let her do her own thing, which she loves to do. She sings "Possession" by Sarah McLachlan, which I love. And she makes me happy because she nails it.

Sass: It never fails to amaze me how much control you have.
Zack: I believe in you... but it's SO bizarre how you're still here.

After dialogue:
"Well done Jenny Gear!"
"Thank you Ben Mulroney!"

Only in Canada.

Number nine is Mike Bustos. He took time off from his vet studies to purse singing. His choice of song is "Straight from the Heart" by Bryan Adams. It's a good interpretation, and it should carry him through.

Zack: Incredibly schmaltzy.
Farley: Not bad.

Number ten is Audrey de Montigny. She says her biggest fan is her dad. She's turned 18 and to celebrate she made the top 11. She, like Gary Beals, sings "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan. And true to Audrey style, she nails it.

Sass: You have grace!
Jake: In Montreal... I told Zack "there's the Canadian Idol".

And finally, there's Tyler Hamilton. Before the competition he was working as a contractor, and now he's working on his singing. The final Canadian selection tonight is "After the rain" by Blue Rodeo. He's got a nice voice, but his basis is formed on a country style and I'm not sure how far that will take him. But he's professional!

Zack: You're the best karaoke singer in Canada.
Sass: A joy to listen to.

And now... RESULTS:

And it starts with the top 11 singing "Love will move mountains". Which isn't too bad, all told.

Tonight, eight will be safe and three will be eliminated (out of a so called "bottom four")

After we see a preview of the Idol's new living quarters, the results of 1.6 million votes are shown.

Toya: BOTTOM 4
Billy: safe
Ryan: safe
Richie: BOTTOM 4
Audrey: safe
Gary: safe
Mikey: safe
Tyler: safe
Karen-Lee: BOTTOM 4

And following the break...

Jenny: safe
Candida: BOTTOM 4

The first to go is... Richie Wilcox. He thanks everyone and is on his way.

Next... Candida Clauseri. She throws a kiss to the crowd and is done.

And following the break... Toya Alexis is safe and thus Karen-Lee Batten is out. She sings to finish her CI run and we're done for this week.

August 11, 2003

CI August 11 - round of 8

Last week Richie, Candida and Karen-Lee were eliminated. The remaining eight will belt out Motown songs tonight.

(roll titles)

But before that, we've got some inspiration in the form of the TEMPTATIONS! The CI's are sitting in the front row and loving it immensely. After the break, Ben interviews them, they comment quickly on their lives in Motown, and it's onto the singing.

Number one is Mikey Bustos. He sings "I heard it through the grapevine". He shimmying and shaking is good, but his attempts to get the audience into it is somewhat misplaced.

Jake: That was devoid of any emotion.
Farley: Overall it wasn't bad.

Mikey says he picked a more upbeat song to throw Canada a bit more of his talent.

Number two is one of my faves, Jenny Gear. She sings a Stevie Wonder tribute song to Duke Ellington. And this is the type of song where Jenny shines, doing an excellent job.

Sass: You sang that as well as you could.
Zack: This girl can really sing!

She likes being called the Vincent van Gogh of the competition by Jake.

Number three is the King of Kingston, Ryan Malcolm, singing "For once in my life" by Stevie Wonder. Once again, a song well suited for him and it comes to him oh so naturally. And the key high note is perfect.

Zack: I was going to go "ooh ee ooh he looks just like Buddy Holly"... you're starting to grow on me.
Jake: You take these songs... and perform them like you care.

Ryan is flattered that someone sent him a Buddy Holly cd and encouraged him to listen to it.

Ben: People, are the phone lines open yet?
Audience: NO!
Ben: People, will the phone lines be open after the show?
Audience: YES!
Ben: And how long will they be open?
Audience: TWO HOURS!

Audrey de Montigny is number four and sings Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me". She does a great job with it, and she's really enjoying herself.

Sass: You used the song properly.
Farley: Overall not your best performance.

Audrey says she's listened to Motown every since she can remember.

Number five is Tyler Hamilton, who sings the Temptation's own "My girl". I would imagine this is somewhat intimidating, in front of the band, but he does a decent job. He seems to be stuck in a certain vocal range tonight though.

Jake: Elvis has left... and came back as you.
Sass: Garth Brooks does Motown!

Tyler says it was surreal singing in front of the Temptations.

Number six is the up-and-coming diva, Toya Alexis, singing "Do you really love me" by Stevie Wonder. And wow, she knocks the socks off the audience. And those lovely high notes!

Farley: I got a page from Barry Gordon... he wants Motown back.
Zack: You know it... I know it...

She says that her family is her major support.

Billy Klippert is the penultimate singer and chants "I just called to say I love you". It's a nice job, but it's really not his style.

Sass: There's just this thing about you.
Zack: I was under whelmed.

He sang Stevie Wonder in honour of his grandmother, because she loves him.

Just before commercial, Jon asks Ben about boxers or briefs and of course, he shirks it off.

The final song comes from Gary Beals singing "Signed Sealed Delivered". I like it. It's a bit too high at times though, but then again , what do I know?

Jake: If Toya was the best - that was by far the worst.
Farley: It was a bit off.

Gary says he was thrilled to have met the Temptations.

RESULTS

Before we get to them, we see Sass rocking it at a club and the Stones concert, followed by the Idols singing "Ain't too proud to beg". And then we see the Idols meeting Mariah Carey. She is given a CI t-shirt and says "I'll have to cut it up and make it my own". Classy lassy.

Tonight's lowest three pollers will be sent to centre stage, of which two will be sent packing.

Toya: safe
Ryan: safe
Mikey: BOTTOM 3
Jenny: safe
Audrey: safe
Tyler: BOTTOM 3

And after the break...

Billy: BOTTOM 3 Gary: safe

And the first to go is... Mikey (breaking young hearts). But he'll be around for quite a while. But he's now done with his CI career.

And the second and final is Tyler. Billy's safe for another week.

August 18, 2003
Last week, Billy dodged a bullet when he was saved - unlike Tyler Hamilton and Mikey Bustos. Who will go this week?

(roll titles)

Our top six - Audrey, BIlly, Jenny, Ryan, Gary and Toya are back. This week's theme is "Summertime Hits".

And ooh... Jake is wearing sunglasses for the occasion. How nice. A collage of people sharing their preferred summer songs and singing "Walking on Sunshine" starts the show.

Jenny Gear is singing "Summertime" by George Gershwin. This is not what we would expect, but Jenny doesn't stick to the norm, does she? And more than previously, she's doing a wonderful job.

Jake: Last week... we thought... wouldn't it be wonderful if Jenny Gear sang "Summertime"?
Zack: Those lower tones are crazy... and beautiful.

If she wasn't on CI, Jenny would be at her theatre company. But she's not, is she??

Following the break, Jon Dore gets invited to the judges after party, with Ben's mom in tow (and Ben has his dreams wrecked for years to come).

Gary Beals is singing "Unchained melody" by the Righteous Brothers. His soulful voice once again shines through. And it seems very smooth too.

Sass: You are amazing!
Farley: You unchained yourself - and you do so well.

Gary says he's previously serenaded girls. I guess that would work, eh?

Audrey de Montigny, the sirene de Ste. Julienne is third. She's chosen "Dream Lover" by Mariah Carey. I'll be honest, Mariah Carey songs drive me UP THE WALL. She doesn't do that bad but I think she could have done better.

That being said, I like her. And to boot, I had friends at this show, and they got her to autograph my sign. So there!

Zack: that was fromage (for our non French speaking readers: that means "cheese")
Sass: If that was cheese, it was Camembert (that's good!)

Audrey says that yes, amongst the busy schedule, she and the other idols get some time to relax.

Billy Klippert is fourth. He's singing CCR's "Have you ever seen the rain?". Billy is really "grinding" his voice this time - will it break up again, like it did in the boot camp?

Farley: I'm a huge fan of your voice.
Jake: The song didn't do it for me.

Billy says his perfect day is sitting back and reading a book.

Toya Alexis, the pride of Ajax, is up fifth and singing "You are the sunshine of my life". Canada's only two time reality show participant (the other show? Popstars series I) once again nails everything perfectly.

Jake: With power like that, where were you when the lights went out? (reference to the blackout)
Sass: I'm glad I'm wearing a dress, because you can knock the pants off of anyone.

Toya says that she loves her family.

Jon Dore then shows us what the Idols would do if there was another blackout. Apparently, Audrey would have a picnic, Gary would braid his hair, and Billy would become a tribal warrior (hopefully to scare off ABC execs off from resurrecting "I'm a d-lister, give me some screen time!").

Ryan Malcolm is the final performer. He's singing "Drift Away" by Dobie Gray. And he delivers it in true Ryan style.

Farley: I'm liking the way you're moving out on stage. Zack: You got a little overpumped and lost it a bit...

Ben states that Malcolm Mania is sweeping the nation... and so is the question of whether Ben wears boxers or briefs. He drops his pants at the end... smart man - it's boxers.

RESULTS

Here we go...

Jenny - SAFE
Audrey - Bottom 3
Ryan - SAFE
Toya - Bottom 3

and after the break...

Gary - Bottom 3
Billy - SAFE

One of three from Audrey, Toya and Gary will be leaving.

But it's not...

Gary! He's safe, and heading back to the couch.

And going home is...

Toya!?!?! This comes as a complete shocker to the judges... Farley looks like he's going to walk out in disbelief, and Zack is equally as stunned.

We'll continue, somehow, next week.

August 25, 2003
Last week: In a shocker, Toya is gone. We're down to the fab five - Audrey, Jenny, Ryan, Billy and Gary.

Tonight's theme is Elton John.

(roll titles)

Once all five idols have arrived on the scene, Ben reveals that the CI cd is being released tomorrow. Ryan says that the winner's name is on track 99.

Yours truly already got a copy. I'm listening it to right now. Surprised? I wouldn't be.

But what, asks Ben, does the winner get? Ivan Berry of BMG Canada tells us that they will get a recording contract. He says that their talent, passion and emotion will be put to the test. He thinks anyone of the five remaining idols can pull it off.

And just in case you forgot, we have judges... let's shuffle over to them and find out what the deal is.

The king of diamonds, Jake Gold! The queen of hearts, Sass Jordan! The ace of clubs, Farley Flex! And that instruction card you can't actually play with... Zack Warner.

What a crack team of writers we are privileged to have! Indeed!

Ben: Sass, do you guys actually vote after the show! Sass: Yes we do! Ben: Really? Zack: Last week we voted for you to leave, but... Ben: Again, proving your opinion means very little...

Good stuff. Let's get to our vocalists, shall we?

First up is Audrey de Montigny. In tonight's pre-song clips our Idols are shown signing autographs.

Wait, what's this?

(stops tape, rewinds tape in slo-mo)

Yes, it's true! This reality writer can be seen on camera beside someone who is getting an autograph. Excellent! Another show conquered!

Enough about me. (Insert joke here). Audrey sings "The One". The studio audience is captive as per usual. Nice to see competitors getting extra time to sing, as there's less of them.

Jake: You made it quite believable. Farley: It's amazing how you evoke emotion in a second language.

Audrey says that after the show, the idols talk about performances and the judges' comments.

Ryan Malcolm says life as a Canadian Idol is just surreal. He's going to sing "Believe". It fits his music stylings excellently. He pulls off the falsetto notes especially well.

Sass: Once you got into it... that's the ticket! Zack: You are the journeyman... I see the real artist that you are.

Ryan states that he loves his fans (called "Malcolm Maniacs").

Jenny Gear is third. She's adjusting well to life away from Carbonear (it's her first time to Toronto). She says fame won't change her. Her song choice is "Rocket man". Jenny's range is lower for the most part so this song works well. She doesn't move around that much, which is perfectly fine, because it allows me to concentrate on her voice!

Zack: It was sorta like... "whoops". Jake: You know what you're doing... you're sure about it.

Jenny says that if she had an album coming out tomorrow, it would have a jazzy/folks style.

Fourth of five is Gary Beals. And again I see myself getting autographs! Albeit a very quick glimpse...

Maybe I need an agent? In any case Gary is loving it and loving hugs especially. He'll be crooning "Something about the way you look tonight". Pretty much perfect. You can't really nitpick this performance at all.

Sass: You put the soul and phrasing into that song. Farley: I pushed my weight around to keep you on this show, and I'm damn proud I did.

Gary said that it was hard to pick a song but he found something that fit his vocal stylings.

Last song tonight goes to Billy Klippert. And golly, there's my friend Caleb getting a Billy-graph. Much more evident than I was, to boot! Excellent, indeed. Billy says that he loves how Canadians are very patient and don't mob him.

He's singing "Leave on". I've never heard of it, but he puts the usual Billy touch on it. There's something about that voice...

Jake: You sang it as if it was written for you. Sass: You got so carried away you forgot it was the end - I love that!

RESULTS SHOW

Idols start out with "I'm still standing". It's... interesting. And in the audience is Vanessa from AI.

We also get to see footage of the Idols in the CD recording process. Then John Dore gives a backstage look at the show and gives an excellent Jake Gold impression followed then by the Idols visiting a summer camp for kids with cancer, brightening their days.

The Idols then sing "Your song". They're really drawing it out to fill the hour show!

And here we go...

Gary: SAFE Ryan: BOTTOM 2 Jenny: BOTTOM 2 Audrey: SAFE Billy: SAFE

Whaa?? Ryan and Jenny are the only two that haven't been in this position before, and now they both are. They are both given a chance to reprise their Elton tunes from the previous night, and then we find out that...

JENNY'S GONE!!! NOOOOOO!!!

I'm ever so slightly upset - mind you I would have been upset with either scenario.

Ben states that Jenny is why this competition is uniquely Canadian. Farley states that 50% of the people that watch the show get what she does, 50% don't, but 100% of the first group will buy your record. When then see a flashback of Jenny's trip to the top 5. Jenny sings out the show with "Possession" (which is hauntingly beautiful), and the top 11 then gather on stage to support her.

September 1, 2003

Last week, the pride and joy of Carbonear, Newfoundland, Jenny Gear, bid adieu. Audrey rests as the last female, surrounded by Ryan, Billy and Gary.

(roll titles)

Ben looks like Avril Lavigne, how scary. This week we're celebrating love songs. With a slight focus on Celine Dion.

The top four got to travel this week to Vegas to meet Celine and we see some footage. Celine says it's hard work but a good time is usually had. She admires what they are doing. All Idols get to have pictures with Celine before she takes off for the night.

Billy the Idol starts the show off with "Hooked on a feeling".

Paging CALISTA FLOCKHART!

I'm surprised he chose this song, but surprisingly it works for him.

Sass: Try to sit back a little when you are singing, otherwise great. Zack: It's a silly song... it's too light and fluffy for me.

Billy says his very first crush was his kindergarten teacher.

Norah Jones' "Turn me on" is Audrey's selection. Very smooth as per usual.

Farley: Very well delivered. Jake: Tonight you sang with such confidence.

Audrey says romance is ideally a candlelit dinner.

Nova Scotia continues to be represented by Gary Beals. His ballad (not sure which) is okay but it doesn't sit well with me.

Farley: I liked that. Zack: You were a step behind... of what that could be.

Gary says his fave type of love song is gospel.

Ryan Malcolm is Crazy for Patsy Cline. It's the first song he ever learned. It's a different style for him, that's for sure!

Jake: I thought it was really kind of schmaltzy. Sass: I love your stage presence.

Ryan says he used to drive eight hours round trip just to see his girlfriend on the weekends.

Since we only have four singers left, we now can give everyone a second chance. Audrey starts off round two singing "Greatest Love of All". She starts off a bit weak, but she picks it up extremely well!

Sass: I thought that was really nice. Zack: You need to learn to be able to make yourself shine.

The crowd chants for her in unison, so much so, that Ben can't get a question in!

Billy's second song is out of this world: he sings "I don't wanna miss a thing" from the Armageddon soundtrack. Well, if Billy's going to sing a love song, it might as well be this one! He's still a bit off, though.

Farley: You rocked it. Jake: You actually made me like this song!

Most of the audience agrees with Billy that any song can be a "Billy song". Once can only think that Billy-oke will be sweeping the nation soon enough!

Ryan Malcolm is singing "Hooked on a feeling".

Paging THAT INSANE DANCING BABY!

Gee, what would Ally think? I personally like this version as it's a bit more true to the original than Billy's.

Sass: Personality - you've got that in spades. Jake: (he agreed with Zack - that Ryan's great).

Ben says something to Ryan but alas I can't make it out so we may never know...

The final song is Gary with "When a man loves a woman". Or is he singing that? It sounds NOTHING LIKE IT. You can play around a bit with each song... but that's ridiculous!

Farley: You have to make the song... hit the memorable notes. Zack: That was a whole lot of nothing.

Gary is confusing Ben, but why doesn't he get a chance to explain himself, I wonder?

RESULTS

Four Idols start the show with "Put a little love in your heart". Well done. We get to see their CD release party at BMG. And it's already gone gold! We also get a peek into more footage from Vegas... including Elvis impersonators (or Ben Mulroney impersonators, depending on your perspective), and more visiting with Celine Dion - this time with the cast and crew backstage.

The Idols then sing "Love lifts us up where we belong". It works, I guess.

We see footage of Jon meeting audience members before the show (but no sign of me hounding him for autographs!).

And here we go...

Ryan - SAFE Audrey - BOTTOM 2 Gary - BOTTOM 2 Billy - SAFE

And leaving tonight is...

The final female, Audrey de Montigny. What a ride for the eighteen year old this has been.

Jake: You have a huge career ahead of you. Zack: You're going to become a very very big star.

And most certainly she will. We'll be back next week with our trio of male crooners.

September 8, 2003
Canadian Idol: The finale!

15,000 have been whittled down to two. The votes are in. Who will be the Canadian Idol?

(roll titles)

All of the top 11 are back for this grand finale. And they start with a medley: Heat Wave, Under the Boardwalk, The Tide is High, I can see clearly now, Get Ready, Never can say good bye, Ain't no mountain high enough.

Ben says that Idol fever has swept the nation - and truly it has. We get a nice collage of newspaper and tv clips.

And we start hearing from individuals across the nation as to their preference: Gary or Ryan? They're being interviewed by former top 30 contestants, such as Danny Balkwill in Vancouver! Justin Ament in Alberta! Tara Martel in Winnipeg! Sharon van den Enden and Joni Rodney in Toronto! And for some reason, Rahim Jaffer, a member of parliament, in Ottawa! Kelly-Anne Evans from my new home, St. John's! I actually passed by her that day, and only realized it afterwards! Kevin Murdoch in Halifax!

That was a nice trip down memory lane, wasn't it?

Back in the theatre, we say hello for the final time to Zack Werner (almost typed "morris"...), Farley Flex, Sass Jordan and Jake Gold. Jake says it's been the journey of a lifetime. Sass has had a blast. Farley feels a sense of pride. Zack says, when asked, that he loves Ben (and comes up on stage to give him a hug as a result). Incidentally, I think Ryan Malcolm's stunt double is sitting behind him.

A look back at the series from the start five months ago is part of this finale retrospective. Gary says he waited FOR EVER in line. He remembers especially Sass' comments because they were so positive. And he got the ticket in the end! Ryan remarks that he was sick to his stomach that morning. He was surprised to move on.

In the top 100, Gary was very stressed because he wanted it so much. Gary's duet partner didn't make it, and he said that was the hardest thing to go through.

Back from the ads in the studio, Ben states that Gary had the biggest entourage at the audition - all members of his family. At this point, Gary feels cool, calm and collected. We cut to the Halifax Metro Centre (near his hometown), where there are SEVEN THOUSAND PEOPLE cheering him on! They even find one of Gary's best friends in the crowd. He states that Gary drools!

The top 11 make their second appearance, but first with the aid of some footage, presumably at a Wal-Mart somewhere. And of course tons of people are lined up! They sing selections from their "Greatest Moments" CD. Karen does Norah Jones. Ritchie does James Taylor. Candida does Whitney. Mikey does Dan Hill. A personal favourite performance, Toya sings "Try it on my own". Tyler covers Elton John. Jenny Gear starts laughing in the middle of her song! Audrey sings "My Reflection". And Billy finishes it off with his signature tune, "Superstar".

Returning from another break, Ryan is on stage with Ben. Ryan says his fave moment so far has been meeting everyone. We then take a peek into St. Lawrence College in Kingston, where at that moment, I'm quite positive that the local affiliate host is going deaf! Ryan gets to see a childhood friend who actually started a grassroots campaign to keep him on the show as a Wild Card. And look where he is now!

We now continue our look back at the path to get to this point. Gary and Ryan were both in group three (in the top 30). Ryan says it was hard to convey emotion to the camera. Gary's rehearsals were flat. Ryan said to Gary after the show that Gary would move on, but he wouldn't - which was true. Ryan's luck changed in the Wild Card - he was the last to graduate to the top 11.

It's time for Jon Dore's last appearance. And he brings up "The Journey of a lifetime". This, as you may recall, was a song written by a young lady at the Halifax auditions. She wasn't picked - but tonight, in a taped piece, she sings it on the Canadian Idol stages. Along with some of the more... uh... shall we say... "eclectic non-winners". I personally like the girl from Nova Scotia who pretends to put on her baggy pants. She's enjoying herself. Plus, Jon and Ben sing! And Ben can't carry a tune to save his life! I'm crying because I'm laughing so hard.

Part III of the complete history of Canadian Idol is the story of the live performances. Each week, at least one person would bid adieu. Gary says the couches, where they await their fate, are the worst things associated with the show. Ryan, when up for elimination, figured that he was going home the one time he was in the bottom level, because as he put it "there was no way that Jenny Gear would leave". But it turned out he was wrong.

They find the Tuesday shows nerve-wracking, especially the commercials! The found when Billy left, it was especially tough.

The top 11 is on for the third time. It's another medley, and it comprises Shania Twain and Bryan Adams, among others.

And hey - have you heard that there's Idol all around the world? A cool montage of worldwide clips follows (even one featuring Simon Cowell on the original UK Pop Idle panel). Personal greetings are given by the Portuguese, Finnish and German hosts. And this segues beautifully into a performance by some guy named Ruben Studdard, whom you may have heard of, singing a song called "Flying without wings".

The top 11 is out for the final time tonight, singing "I've had the time of my life". And it includes Mikey breakdancing! What a riot!

At this time, I would have seen a retrospective on Gary's trip, except the local affiliate screwed it up. In any case, here's what the judges have to say about Ryan:

Sass: He doesn't sing how he looks.
Jake: The first time I saw him, I was like - this guy's got it!
Zack: It took him a while to let his guard down - but I new this kid could sing.
Farley: I think he was consistent.

Ryan says that this has been the most fun, emotional, tired, thrilling process he's ever been involved with.

He says if he wins he'll do Canada proud! He gets to sing his favourite song from the Canadian Idol, which is "Try" by Blue Rodeo. And he nails it - was there any doubt?

Canadian Idol is now so popular, it's been mentioned in the House of Commons! Two members of parliament send their support.

WE get one final flashback from Gary and Ryan, and now it's time for

THE RESULTS!

No, wait, it's "Don't dream it's over" by the two remaining competitors. But really, now, it's time for

THE RESULTS!

And again, denial. Here's some final thoughts from the judges.

Zack: It is what it is! And it's been great.
Farley: I'm so proud of these guys, that have come to this arena.
Sass: I love you.
Jake: I've made lifelong friends... the contestants have had courage.

Ben: This has been one of the best (experiences of my life). And now,

THE RESULTS!

The winner of Canadian Idol, the one who got the majority of the 3.4 million votes...

ENOUGH ALREADY! ENOUGH WITH THE SUSPENSE!

And his name is...

RYAN MALCOLM!

Cue the celebration! The confetti! Mrs. Malcolm crying! Mr. Malcolm crying! The on stage hugs!

Ryan: I love you guys so much! I can't believe this!

Ben: We've finally got our first Canadian Idol! I give you him.

Billy is seen crying with Ryan on stage. And then what might be the best dialogue in the series:

Ryan: Are we still on?
Ben: Yes.

Classic stuff. Ryan calls the top 11 to join him up front, to celebrate. He has more hugs from everyone, and then launches into the winner's single, "Something More". Now available at fine stores everywhere!

And even though they're not audible, everyone on stage sings along. And more confetti!

Ryan's family finally get on stage at the end of the song... and thus ends the journey of a lifetime called Canadian Idol.

POSTLUDE

As always, my thanks to Gordon and Jason for supporting me in writing my updates. And to you, the reader, for allowing me to share a different type of "Idol" with you.

On a personal note, this has been a wonderful series to cover. When you watch it on television, it's one level. And I was able to step it up a notch by seeing one of the live performance shows in Toronto - it was a case of being in the right place at the right time. I have some lovely memories from that show, and I must say that everyone involved is top notch.

Look for Canadian Idol II sometime next year! And if you guys are lucky, you won't see me singing "Like a surgeon" on national television...

- Ryan Vickers.
