Troop 1017 News. I would guess the "new" thing about troop 1017 this year is change... change in our troop make-up and dynamics.  Three of our four senior girl scouts graduated from HS this summer and we have added 7 new Junior girl scouts to our family.   It's my understanding that Troop 1017 has been around this area a long time ...  We have been a Brownie troop, Junior troop, Cadette and Senior troop ... and now we are back to a Junior & Cadette troop.
This fall our juniors had fun hiking at Charleston Falls.  It was a beautiful fall day ... just perfect for hiking.   We hiked the trail to see the falls and then hiked to see their new lookout tower which was really cool.
A couple weeks ago we also traveled to Build A Bear at the Fairfield Commons Mall and made some bears.  The girls voted to make 2 bears to donate to local fire departments.   They really had fun choosing which animal to make and how to dress it.  We made sure our bears would be appropriate for either a girl or boy ... so we chose not to dress them in a girl scout sash, but instead white t-shirts which we painted.
In a week we are going to Troy to make our own pottery.   We will be making a coil bowl and then glazing and painting it.   We've painted ceramics before, but this is the first time we will make our own piece.   It takes two different visits to the pottery shop ... one for making the item and the next to glaze/paint it.   Leaders if you are interested in doing this email Vicki for the name and phone number of this shop.
In December our Juniors will become Santa's elves for a night as we play host to Santa at the Christiansburg Firehouse.   Our troop has been doing this event for several years ... we choose the date, confirm that Santa is available, do the flyers, decorate the firehouse, and make treats for the children coming to visit Santa.   This is a great way for us to give back to the community and perform a service for the fire department which gives our troop a place to meet each month.
Also, we will be caroling in St Paris in DEC.  The folks enjoy our visits so much and we like singing to them.
January is our big winter camp out.   This year we are going to Woodhull East at Rolling Hills.   Watch for updates on this camp out and how Santa's visit in upcoming Troop News.
