Monday 4/15/1960 Chicago (A)'s Freese wins Player of the Week award The AL's best player of the week was Chicago (A)'s Gene Freese, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Gene was on fire, hitting .455 with 3 HR and 8 RBI. Pittsburgh's pitcher Tom Cheney had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the NL Player of the Week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.06 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well.
Wednesday 4/10/1960 Frank Lary dominates Kansas City, gives up just one hit DETROIT - Good things can happen when you throw strikes. And Frank Lary did so today, in a 1-hit shutout against Kansas City. Andy Carey spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with one out in the 9th inning. Lary (2-0) struck out 8 and walked none, throwing 64 of 93 pitches for strikes. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Rocky Colavito provided Detroit with the offense Lary needed as he finished with 1 hit in 3 AB, hitting a homerun. Detroit scored 1 run on 4 hits.
Monday 4/8/1960 Nixon and Boyer win Player of the Week award The AL's best player of the week was Boston's Russ Nixon, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Nixon helped his team with an average of .500 and 7 RBI in 32 at bats. While compiling an on base percentage of .500, Russ hit .500 and slugged .750. He has collected 7 runs batted in this year. He's 1st in the AL in batting and 4th in RBI! The NL's best player of the week was St. Louis' Ken Boyer, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .452 and hit .393, while driving in 12 runs.
Tuesday 4/2/1960 Bob Skinner hits for the cycle against Philadelphia PHILADELPHIA - Pittsburgh's rightfielder Bob Skinner once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Philadelphia's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Tuesday. A single in the 2nd off John Buzhardt accounted for his 1st hit. His 2nd hit was a double off John Buzhardt in the 5th inning. A single in the 7th off John Buzhardt accounted for his 3rd hit. In the 9th inning he unloaded a triple off Turk Farrell. A 448 feet drive to center field marked his 5th hit, a solo homerun off Jim Owens in the 12th inning. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Bob did drive in one while scoring 4 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 7 hits in 10 at bats, resulting in a .700 batting average. He's now the 1st player in league history to hit for the cycle!
Tuesday 4/2/1960 Alvin Dark has 2000th career hits PHILADELPHIA - Alvin Dark got a standing ovation from 35984 fans in Philadelphia, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. Along with his 2000 hits, Alvin collected 123 homeruns and 728 RBI in 13 seasons. 'I'm out of words. I'll probably realize it tomorrow, but for now I'm done.' His hit in the 2nd inning was a grand slam off Vern Law.
