(Management of civil construction is my profession)

(I manage building of assets for the society)

Fellow professionals, let us make `QUALITY ASSURANCE' our key-word in our management for building of assets for the society

Hello friends,

I am G.S. Tawarmalani, a civil engineer by profession. I graduated in civil engineering in 1958 and joined Central Public Works Department immediately after that. I retired as Director General of CPWD, in November 1996, after serving that organization for well over 38 years.

I am now engaged on various civil engineering Advisory assignments. Some of my specialities are construction management, contract management, arbitration, general administration, public works management, valuation techniques in implementation of direct tax laws relating to immovable properties, computer application in civil engineering jobs etc. I am currently engaged on some civil engineering Arbitration (click for a book on my analysis on arbitrations in India) cases, and on conducting Departmental Inquiries in disciplinary proceedings. (My name appears on CVC's panel of approved Inquiry officers, on Central Vigilance Commission's web page)

I have recently drafted a WORKS MANUAL for management of Public Works for the Public Works Department of the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

I possess a keen interest in computer applications in civil engineering profession. During my service period too, I developed programs to help me in my job. I later developed program for application in field Scheduling and Monitoring (Click for more details) of building projects. My program gives structured bar charts for buildings, from one to twenty five floors in height, with only four to five input parameters like, date of start, completion time contemplated, shuttering rotation required on each floor and number of lifts required. (A typical output for activities on one floor is given below.)

Means for Scheduling & Monitoring

(Tools that we civil engineers can not do without)

I conducted an in-depth study of collapse of circular thin shaft type staging of water towers. I came up with some interesting analysis on what possibly could be the cause of several collapses that occurred in the last decade and a half in similar structures built by different organizations and at different places during different periods. (It was indeed startling to note that there had been many cases of collapse of water towers with the staging of similar design. The collapses occurred within a period ranging from 1 1/2 years to 18 years from the date of commissioning!)

I developed a computer model to analyze the probable process of actual collapse.

We learn a lot from collapses & failures, provided of course,

we take time off to analyze them critically

On the personal front, I was born in Larkana Sindh (now in Pakistan). Like most Sindhi families, I derive my surname from the name of one of my ancestors. Tawarmalani family is relatively a small family, though we being spread all over, we have hardly been in touch with each other, particularly with the younger generation. The family tree started with one of our ancestors by the name TANWARMAL a few generations back.
