In 1995 Miyazaki Hayao brought his first major anime release to the states. An all-star cast including Claire Danes (San), Billy Bob Thornton (Jigo the monk), Gillian Anderson (Moro the wolf god), Jada-Pinkett Smith (Toki) and Minnie Driver (Lady Eboshi) was assembled by Disney for the first major anime release since Ghost in the Shell in the '80's.The forest god has become angry at man for tearing his forest apart to mine more iron for guns and nails. When the animal gods begin to die and are transformed into angry demons consumed by hate, the boar god travels from the area of Iron Town to Ashitaka's village and runs rampant. The boar god, in his final throes of death, strikes Ashitaka who is inflicted with the poisonous hate that consumed the god. Ashitaka, the last prince of the Amishi, must cut his hair and leave for good to discover the cause of the boar gods anger. The question becomes not what caused the hatred but who as a story that encompases a forest, a mine, and a town full of a thousand people develops into a race to save both the forest spirit and the town. Who will live? Who will die? Can the forest and the town survive in the same area? It's up to San, Ashitaka, Jigo and Lady Eboshi to decide the fate of all in Princess Mononoke.
