Sleeping Giant
Mornings come so slowly these days
New horizons taking up charges as they move across the sky
The unalterable visage of your smile
The seeming façade of your happiness
It makes me think you don’t know
That you’ve not noticed
That things have fallen to the wayside
Yet I still find so much of your smile
A delight to my eyes
A gentle caress on days when peace is needed
A sharp stinging blow to wake up
The sleeping giant of us
The slumbering beast that has possessed us
Watch as its chest rises and falls
Breaths fill its body
Up and down and up and down
And still you watch
Quiet repose; near reproach
Yet something seems so different
Yet something makes me feel as if there can be no more
And it keeps asking
Needing
Wanting
Keeps taking from me
Sapping my energy
Yet I continue on
I push forward
I find something to hold on to
Some small piece of shattered hope
Because I can do no less
Because I know no better
And yet
And yet
And yet it seems so futile
It shines like the sun
Moving across the sky
Highlighting your profile
As I wait
Oceans away
Worlds away
Times away
Past blending into present into future
Spinning and spinning as souls recognize one another
And the beast awakens...
the giant sleeps no more.
Take from me whatever you wish
I lay myself open to you
Stand defenseless against the barrage
That is your love
Fortifying the crumbling walls
Of my fort
You aren’t supposed to get in.
I am impenetrable.
I stand against the winds of your need
Pulling at the sleeves of my shirt
Tossing my hair
Left to right
Right to left.
And yet there is silence
As I stand on the precipice
There is supposed to be safety…
Cool, calm safety
But nothing is left unturned.
You aren’t allowed to be here.
I am the rock of solitude.
The drop doesn’t seem like it would be far—
The drop seems like it will be safe—
I will be cradled by the tumultuous seas
As my body falls to the ocean floor
A wasted mass
As the mind surpasses the flesh
And the gentle undulation
Of kelp wraps me into its charms
Like your arms
Like your face
Like the slow grind of your hips
Like the gentle sigh of your laughter
Like the soft touch of your lips to mine
And yet
You are not supposed to be here.
I am the impenetrable fortress
I am the rock of solitude
I am
I have to be.
Tomorrow holds nothing for the simple soul
As it moves from point to point
Trying to find some pattern
Some connection
Yet it cannot find that
Simple souls are like that—
They don’t understand
They don’t care to understand
And the rest of tonight
Fades away into the dark night
The tapestry of stars in the sky
Like dots in a long chain
Of cause and effect
Wait patiently to shine
Wait with purpose to shine
And we don’t care to find out anything more
It’s easier that way, says the simple soul—
Allowing everything to fade to gray
Allowing everything to just happen without
Rhyme
or
Reason
or
Freedom,
Because the simple soul knows not what to do
Yet it tries…
Always tries…
Strives and cannot
Make the connection
Simply…
