Bezerra de Menezes Spiritist Society, Inc. was initiated by a group of Brazilian Spiritists who reside in Maryland. The main purpose of the founders was to study, practice, and disseminate the Spiritist Doctrine in the United States, as well as to conduct charitable activities, following the example of what has been done by Spiritist Societies in Brazil and in many other countries.
Initially, this group organized a weekly meeting to pray and to study the Spiritist Doctrine at a residence of a Brazilian family in Bethesda. The group decided to create a website to help in the dissemination of the Spiritist Doctrine and launched the campaign "Get to know Spiritism", based on brochures produced by the International Spiritist Council. At the same time, the group started to offer guidelines to individuals in need by helping them to establish and maintain the Gospel at home practice.
As the number and interest of participants have increased, the Society has broadened its activities.
