





The Trip, 2000. A Multi-sensorial experience
in which the participants are invited to do an internal trip and to become foreigners
in their own country. The participants received a Travel Kit, a CD player with
headphones, an envelope and instructions. Instructions: 1- Go to the bus stop
and take the shuttle bus that goes around UMBC campus neighborhood. 2- Press
play on the CD when the bus begins to move. Travel Kit: Campus map locating
the bus stop; route map and schedule of the Shuttle bus; a postcard with the
sentences "Two bodies cannot occupy the same place at the same time, but two
places can occupy the same body at the same time." CD: Three kinds of contents
are alternating: a- Mental Space Exercises. Example: "Look the landscape at
the window frame. Memorize this image. Describe it after ten years had passed."
" Imagine that you just know the place were you was born through tourism guides."
Etc. b- Personal confessions related to trips, "It was the last time that I
saw her[É]" c- Abstract sounds compositions created from the noises of the bus.
Envelope: Pages of a 1971Õs tourism guide showing Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (year
and city were I was born). Family snapshots having Rio in the background. Two
Fortune Cookies. The CD lasts the 30 minutes of the round trip. Each sound was
composed to match on time with the landscape in which the bus runs. "Look at
these leaves[É]," when the bus pass by a little forest; "I was quick out home[É],"
when the bus pass by a billboard with the word "home" in big letters ; etc.
