This outdoor monument includes a
triangular "Field of Service". The field focuses on an American flag and depicts
nineteen statues of servicemen emerging from a grove of trees.
Besides the field, there is a 164 foot
long granite wall with etchings of various servicemen and women who served in
Korea.
Nearby there is a circular "Pool of
Remembrance", a raised granite curb that lists the nations that participated in
the United Nations efforts, and an area devoted to POWs, KIAs, and MIAs.
Personal Reflections:
As I gazed at the Korean War Memorial,
I became over-whelmed with a sense of yearning for some reasoning. The
faces etched on the long granite wall seemed to be crying out for a
explaination. This was truly an eerie feeling. If you listen very
carefully, you can almost hear these statues and the faces upon the wall tell
the story of "The Forgotten War". The memorial is in my opinion, one of the most
memorable of my family's trip to Washington.
