Kangaroo
Point Climbing
The cliffs at Kangaroo point are the remnants on one of Brisbane's oldest
quarries. In recent times Brisbane city council has turned the area
into an extended parklands with walking, rollerblading and riding paths
stretching in from Southbank and the Story bridge. There are barbecues
and grassy lawns with spectacular city views but what most GRUBS are
interested in are the 20 metre cliffs.
The Cliffs support a range of climbing including top roping and bolted
lead climbs. GRUBS members usually climb on top ropes set up by experienced
climbers within the club. Climb difficulties range from those suiting
first time climbers to lines that will challenge experienced climbers.
Lead gear is available to those with experience and training is offered
for those who want to learn!
Access
Kangaroo point cliffs
are easily accessible whatever mode of transport you choose.
Cyclists and Roller
bladers can travel up the bike path from Griffith and follow it to southbank
and right along lower river terrace road to the cliffs.
Public transport access to Kangaroo point is great. There are two major
bus stops near by. From Griffith get off at the Mater hill station and
walk the route outlined by the map (10min slow walk). The closest train
stop is Southbank, follow the marked route to the cliffs.
Parking can be found on the Lower river terrace and Lepoard street/River
terrace. Use Ellis street to go between the two.
Specifics
Climbing is from 6-9:30 but usually goes later, just remember that after
you finish climbing someone's still got to pull the ropes down. You
might want to bring a water bottle and some snack food.
COST: Climbing gear needs
constant replacement to keep the gear safe so GRUBS charges $20
for climbing per semester on top of membership fees to manage this cost.
This can be paid upfront or in $5 installments for the first four climbing
sessions you attend. This price is very reasonable considering that
a single indoor climbing session will cost you $17 with harness hire.
Climbing fees are payable
to the club treasurers or other executive at Kangaroo Point.
Have Fun!
