Dying with Dignity
The family was imprisoned for years. 1791, Axel Ferson, Marie's rumored lover, tried to help the family escape. Louis and Marie in one carriage and the children in another. But Marie would not leave her children so she insisted they travel in a larger, slower carriage all together. Going through the village of Varennes, the carriage was recognized  and they were arrested.
Lafayette continued to act as the mediator between the royals and the people. He was imprisoned for leading French
armies to fight Austrians. He died in 1834. From there, Marie Antoinette was left to negociate with Austria and France. All the time she was urging Austria to get involved. When France went to war with Austria, King Louis and Marie were charged with treason.  The whole family was moved to Temple Prison and were treated fairly well.  In 1793, Louis XVI was found guilty of treason and was sentanced to death. Soon after, Marie and the children were seperated and the children got sick. In the middle of the night, Marie Antoinette was taken to a different prison and she never saw her children again.
In October, Marie Antoinette was convicted and found guilty of treason and was sentanced to be guilliotined. October 16, 1793, she was taken down the streets of Paris in an open cart. She maintained her dignity until the end. On the scaffold she accidently stepped on the executioner's foot, and her last words were, " Monsieur, I ask your pardon. I did not mean to."
Marie Antoinette's son, Louis Charles, died of tuberculosis in 1795 and her daughter, Madame Royale, survived and lived on to become the duchesse d' Angouleme.
