 Image Analysis

The images in this soliloquy are surrounding the concept of death, darkness and covering up the truth.
The first image is concerning the raven. The raven is a sign of death or that death is near. Lady Macbeth says that the raven is hoarse because he is announcing Duncan's death. This concept that the raven is announcing death, it must encourage Lady Macbeth's desire to be ruthless. Also, the raven is black. The color symbolizes darkness and the foreshadowing that Lady MAcbeth is evil and her soul is dark.
She says "fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty". She wants no part of her body to contain any emotion that could make her think twice about doing the things she needs to do. Even to the top of the toe, she wants it full of cruelty and hatred. This really is the theme of the soliloquy. Her undying passion to overcome her conscious and become emotionless to her actions shows her excessive greed of material things and power. The use of the word "crown" is hinting that she is already accepting the high state of royalty. She may also be dreaming about when her husband becomes king and when she is taking the wealth and glamour with it.
When the spirits being envoked into Lady Macbeth's body and changing her into a "remorseless" human so that she can commit any crime and not feel guilty about it. The reader can picture these ghost-like figures becoming one with Lady Macbeth and consuming her with this inability to release emotions.
The image of hell is also very vivid. It is portrayed a thick black smoke that will cover up and keep secret her actions. She wants this cloud of death to shroud her knife from seeing what it might do as if it had a mind of its own and could stop itself from commiting the murder. The cloud of "black death" will also prevent any interference from Heaven. Showing that Lady Macbeth thinks that the intervention of heavenly thoughts would stop her from doing what needs to be done. The whole idea of heaven versus hell is introduced. That over all, the heavenly ideas and concepts can interfere with and potentially overcome the actions of evil people. Shakespeare has a continued idea throughout this soliloquy of darkness and the use of hell to cover up the actions and problems that occured. The raven was black and was used to announce death, the thick night was used to cover up the dark deed, the talking about hell just emphasizes how the idea of darkness. And when heaven was mentioned, it was portrayed as light and happy and airy. Which is totally contrasting to the darkness of hell. It seems as though the darkness of hell fears the light of heaven as though it could penetrate throught the thick cloud that hides all of the evil actions.
