| Chapter 29 Section 4 Review Questions 1. a. Yuan Shikai-A powerful general who tried to set up a new ruling dynasty with himself as the emperor. He followed Sun Yixian. b. Twenty-one Demands-This was presented to Yaun Shikai, which sought to make China a Japanese protectorate. c. May Fourth Movement-This happened on May 4, 1919 when student protests erupted in Beijing and later spread to cities across China. These set off a cultural and intellectual ferment. d. Guomindang- A Nationalist party that established a government in South China under Sun Yixian in 1921. e. Jiang Jieshi- A young energetic officer who took over the Guomindang in 1925. He was determined to destroy the �Red Bandits� and was someone who wanted to crush local warlords and expand the Japanese boundaries. f. Mao Zedong- A young peasant revolutionist who believed the Communists should seek support not among the small urban working class among the large peasant mass. g. Long March-This happened in 1934 and Mao and about 100,000 if his followers fled the Guomindang. They tracked 6,000 miles and only about 20,000 people survived. This stoof as a symbol of Communist heroism to Chinese opposed to the Guomindang. h. Rape of Nanjing- This is when the Japanese set up their puppet government in Nanjing, which was a former a Nationalist capital. The killing and brutality that accompanied their entry into the city became the �rape of Nanjing�. 2. The Republic of China fell into chaos because Sun Yixian stepped down from president for another man to take his place but that man was corrupt. 3.a. The western ideas that appealed to Chinese reformers were that of revolt and ideas such as democracy and nationalism. B. The reformers planned to revolt and become as technologically advanced as the foreign powers. 4. Goals of: - Sun Yixian- He wanted to catch up and surpass the powers and become as powerful as the outside countries. - Jiang Jieshi- He wanted to reunite China. - Mao Zedong- He wanted to have the large peasant population to be support the Communists and that through big power they would be able to overcome the government. |
