VERMILLION, S.D. South Dakota sophomore Heather Nelson came off the bench to score a game-high 19 points and lead the Coyotes womens basketball team to a 74-65 upset win over second-ranked North Dakota on Saturday. Forward Becky Moen (So., Morris, Minn.) led UND with a career-high 17 points, all in the second half.

The win snapped South Dakotas 23-game losing streak to the Sioux that dated back to Feb. 24, 1989, when USD won 69-65 in Grand Forks.

UND is now 20-2 overall and 12-2 in the NCC. South Dakota is now 12-10 overall and 7-8 in the NCC after defeating its second top 10 team in as many nights. The Coyotes beat #9 North Dakota State, 72-71, in overtime on Friday.

The Sioux struggled offensively in the first half, shooting just 22.7 percent (5-of-22) from the field and committing 13 turnovers.

UND was leading 12-9 after two free throws by Mandy Arndtson (Sr., Austin, Minn.) with 12:26 to play in the half, but the Sioux were then held without a point for 9:40, as South Dakota went on a 14-0 run to take a 23-12 lead.

South Dakota shot 43.5 percent (10-of-23) from the field in the first half and led 27-19 at intermission. UND came within two points of equaling its lowest-ever scoring output in a first half (17 against North Dakota State on Feb. 22, 1992).

Despite the poor first half, UND pulled to within four (30-26) early in the second half, but USD went on a 7-2 run, and the Sioux never got closer than eight points again.

North Dakota improved its field goal shooting in the second half to 50 percent (19-of-38), but South Dakota topped that by shooting 61.1 percent from the field in the second half (11-of-18), including 66.7 percent (4-of-6) from three-point range.

South Dakotas overall field goal percentage of 51.2 percent was the best by any team against North Dakota this season. USDs 28 free throws were also the most against the Sioux in a single game this year.

UNDs free throw percentage (.500) was its worst in a game this year and its 36 rebounds tied a season low. Arndtson grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Despite the loss, the Sioux maintained their two-game lead in the NCC, as second-place Augustana lost 70-55 to South Dakota State. Augustana, North Dakota State and St. Cloud State are all tied for second place in the NCC with 10-4 records.

UND will play host to Minnesota State, Mankato on Friday at 6 p.m. and St. Cloud State on Saturday at 6 p.m.
