![]() Meets Approx. 35 Hours Each Week The goal of this interdisciplinary program, developed by Michael Blevins and The Group Theatre Too, LLC, is to prepare students for professional performance careers and the business of musical theater as it is reflected today. Students participate in the rehearsal, staging and production of a full-scale Broadway musical. In addition to having the opportunity to be directed and choreographed by Broadway and Off-Broadway professionals, students hone and unify their multiple musical theatre skills such as acting, dance and singing. Students involved in Musical Theatre Production receive numerous benefits from the experience, including collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving, literacy, articulation, poise and self-confidence. Through the rehearsal and performance process students are encouraged to learn about and to embrace their unique selves while learning skills that enable them to use their own voice, mind, body and soul as a means of communication. Blevins' essential concept that flavors all the work at the Starwood Performing Arts Camp is that: the performers' instrument is himself or herself - his/her unique voice, body, mind, and soul. Of all the arts, Blevins feels the performing arts demand the most of its artists. In Musical Theatre Production the actor must be able to dance in a variety of styles (ballet, tap, jazz, modern) must sing nicely, must be a musician, quick-change artists, must watch the conductor, concentrate on the dramatic situation, be a magician, gymnast and at times is asked to juggle and/or roller skate. In no other art form are the total technical demands so great. This super human must have the technical excellence of an Olympic athlete and the soul of a poet. A well rounded curriculum encompassing pre-professional training prepares students to compete as "triple threat performers." Effective performers must learn to use and embrace their own bodies, voices and minds. The Musical Theatre Production experience stresses this awareness as well as the fundamentals of creative expression. Plus, students gain a generous amount of rehearsal and performance experience under the guidance and direction of Broadway and Off-Broadway theatre professionals.
