"WHEN I was in Secondary 4, we were shown a video by the school on abortion. It was very explicit and totally freaked me out. There's nothing wrong with pre-marital sex but you must be prepared to bear the consequences. I would do it only if it's with the right person. But knowing how particular I am, it won't be so easy. That's why up to now, I haven't had a serious relationship. People today don't prize virginity as they used to anymore but I think they should. It's a sincere expression of love for the one person you truly care for. I'm a career-oriented person so I won't consider settling down until I've accomplished my goals. I want to get a degree in English literature, and write and publish books, and see my sisters through university. Marriage to me is not that important. If Mr Right comes along, well and good. On a month-long humanitarian trip to India three years ago with Youth Challenge, we visited many abandoned kids, including those with mental and physical disabilities. It gave me a different perspective on life. I decided then that I will adopt one of these kids once I have the means, rather than have my own children. They are badly in need of love and care and there's no one to give them that. It doesn't matter if I don't have a husband. I will still go ahead and adopt two of them once I have a stable job. Going by the number of divorce cases you read about in the papers these days, people don't seem to attach any special significance to marriage anymore. A divorce seems to be just the breaking up of another relationship, no big deal. It's sad, though I agree that sometimes there's no point in struggling on if a marriage really doesn't work. |
