About..... "Rain" (Instrumental)

This is something I recorded while I`d been lent a four track for a couple of weeks, and a proper keyboard to augment my the little Bontempi that I owned, which was rubbish but had a couple of good sounds on it.

I am not a keyboard player. I was just having fun finding different sounds and blending them. I actually only initially started recording to play along to a tape and blend sounds. Long before the now popular "Sound-scaping" that people now do.

Before long I was added new sounds over that, until I ended up with "Rain". It took many takes to get it as it sounds.

But to say I`m not a keyboard player, I like "Rain". I think it belongs somewhere in a film at the end of a sad scene, possible the end of a relationship. That moment when you walk away from one another, knowing it`s over and walk off into an uncertain future. Wondering if you`ll ever find love again with the hurt of the one that's just ended.

I struggled for years to give the piece a music a name. "Rain" came up a few times, but to me didn`t quite justify the piece of music it describes. But the more I listen to it I hear the rain, with sunshine breaking through at the end.

So why "Rain"? Well it`s more to do with the end of my first real romance, and my first heartbreak. (For whom I wrote "A Million Miles Away.")

While a lot of friends had stabbed me in the back, one had stood more on the side-lines. As I was pretty down about it he agreed to go with me on short holiday. A long camping weekend, to and around the Lake District, on my Honda SuperDream 250cc motorbike.

We set off with £30 between us, which included petrol money. Our last meal was a loaf of bread shared between us bought with our last 40p. The petrol tank was virtually dry as we pulled up my house. It wouldn`t even re-start.

And it had rained the entire weekend. We were soaked, cold and wet. My poor friend had spent the entire four days cooped up in a tent with me, starving and freezing, hearing me moan on and about my past relationship.

Did he think we would get back together? Who was she interested in now? Who had stabbed me in the back? What was the timetable of events leading up to it while I was away at college? I was totally heartbroken.

He tried to change the subjects many times, but I was lost in desolation. I even tried crying and just couldn`t, it was beyond crying. I tried to join in the change of subjects, but soon found myself again talking about her. Until we simply stopped talking and watched the raindrops trickle down the canvas.

If music could have been put to the thoughts that drifted through my mind, as I sat and watched the rain, thinking about her, it would have been "Rain."
