*1 AM June 5th, 2001, White House Conference Room*
Bartlet: “Who were those people and what have they done with my daughter?!”
Xander: *looks at Giles with a shudder* “Oh boy, here we go....”
Giles: “Mr. President, into each generation a Slayer is born, one girl in all the world, a Chosen One, one born with the strength and skill to hunt the vampires... She alone will stand against the vampires, the demons and the forces of darkness. We believe your daughter is that Slayer.”
Leo: “This is really the best working theory we’ve got at the moment?”
Josh: “You didn’t see the guy turn to dust when he got staked....”
CJ: “Assuming we accept all that for a moment, who’s behind this?”
Giles: “The demon mentioned performing the ritual of Kana’rith... it’s a ritual few have the thaumaturgical power to perform...”
Xander: “Anyone think the sister of the guy who turned himself into a giant snake qualifies?”
Sam: “You aren’t seriously suggesting that a US Senator is actually some sort of immortal sorcerer demon, are you?”
Anya: “I’m pretty sure they’re not demons. At least, if they are, they never stopped by the social club or anything...”
Willow: “I don’t even want to know....”
Bartlet: “Alright, let’s try a different question. What’s the ritual of Kana’rith?”
Tara: *nervously* “Well... Kana’rith is... a god of life of some sort... he was said to lash out against anyone and anything that would take life...”
Giles: *adjusts glasses* “And the essence of the Slayer, the power of the First Slayer, is fundamentally about death. Whatever this ritual is, we’ve got to find out where it will happen and how it works. But my reference books are back in California....”
Toby: “I think you just got a membership card for the Library of Congress.”
Josh: “I can help out.”
Xander: “If we only knew where they had taken Dawn and Zoey....”
Willow: “I might be able to do something about that...”
Sam: “What have you got in mind?”
Willow: “Well, she seems to have access to the Initiative’s computer files. If I could get access to some of the Pentagon’s routers, I might be able to trace her...”
Leo: “Fitzwallace isn’t going to like this....”
Willow: “Oh, not like I’ve never... err... I mean, could we ask nicely?”
Xander: “Innocent Will... hacking the Department of Defense....”
Josh: *shakes head* “For THIS we spend millions on cryptography....”
Tara: “I’ve .... I’ve got an idea...”
Donna: “What is it, Tara?”
Tara: “Well... if this Senator is keeping her lair somewhere in DC... there will probably be vampire attacks nearby....”
Giles: “Interesting... Tara has a point. But the local police reports won’t know what they’re looking for, so you’re going to have to investigate increased animal attacks and disappearances...”
Donna: “I can pull recent police reports, see if there’s a pattern.”
Tara: “Oh.. okay, I’ll help too.”
CJ: “Great. And I guess that leaves everyone else with damage control....”
Anya: “Oooh, like the political statements? I can help with that....”
The rest of the SG: “NO!”
Bartlet: “Just get my daughter back. Whatever this thing is, I’m NOT going to lose my daughter to it.”
*The communications office*
Sam: “Alright, Willow’s on my computer. I think we’re set.”
Toby: “What about that brief Leo asked you for?”
Sam: *thinks for a minute* “Great, I forgot about it... and it needs to go through someone from the White House Counsel’s office....”
Xander: *perks up* “I can take something over for you, if you like...” *nods over at Willow in Sam’s office* “When she gets on the computer, she doesn’t need any help....”
Sam: “Okay, thanks, I’ll get the report for you....”
Toby: “You’ll find the counsel’s office at....”
*CJ’s office*
Anya: “So this is where the decisions are made...”
CJ: *bursts out laughing uncontrollably*
Anya: “What? I know about this, I watch the news. The news guy said that news coverage influences events, and this is where the news comes from....”
CJ: “Don’t we all wish....”
Anya: “Well.... what did you need from me?”
CJ: “While there’s a voice in my head screaming at me that this is a terrible idea, for which I should probably seek professional help but that’s a separate problem, I’m considering having some of you people face the press room so you can tell them what’s actually going on in your town....”
Anya: “Oh! I think that’s a great idea! I mean, this is nothing compared to the time when the Mayor ascended and nearly destroyed the town. That was so bad that I fled town, but Buffy stopped him. Oh, and let’s not even get started on Glory, the Hell Goddess....”
CJ: *sighs, sits down, looks tired*
Anya: “What?”
CJ: *snaps* “You don’t GET it, do you?! This is IT! We’re done! One crisis after another abroad, the President hid his MS from the country during the election, he’s running for a second term anyway, and now there are accusations that we experimented on our own people! The press is ready to tear us to shreds, they’ve got everything they need to do it, and here you are talking about demons! Forget it, we’re finished!”
Anya: *shocked, a tear starts to roll down her cheek* “No....” *runs off, before she starts crying*
CJ: *regains composure* “Wait!...” *mutters* “Good job, Claudia....”
*Josh’s office*
Donna and Tara are searching crime statistics...
Donna: “So... you and Willow are...”
Tara: *nods* “Yeah... we’ve been together for over a year now....”
Donna: “No, that’s not... oh... oh..OH.... well.... no.. I meant... you’re Witches?”
Tara: “Oh! Yeah... we’re Wiccans... why?”
Donna: “So.... you can cast spells and stuff?”
Tara: “Yes... but magic... it isn’t something that you should abuse.... there can be bad consequences...”
Donna: *disappointed* “So you can’t do anything to make Josh find a girl?”
Tara: “What?.... no... no that’s a bad idea.... but why....?”
Donna: *snorts* “Oh, like he’s ever going to find one on his own...”
Tara: *looks at Donna* “You... you like him, don’t you?”
Donna: “What? No! I mean... no... of course not....”
Tara: “Why can’t you just tell him that?”
Donna: “It’s just.... he took me in... gave me a chance.... Josh hired me after my ex ditched me... and then he took me back after I went back to my ex and it didn’t work out again... as if nothing ever happened... God knows he’s not going to let me live that one down.... but I just... I ... I don’t know...”
Tara: “Love... love’s a kind of magic.... and maybe you don’t need any spells.... just some bravery.”
Donna: *looks surprised by this, thinks for a bit* “Thanks....”
*A back room somewhere*
Dawn: *wakes up groggily*
Spike: “Dawn!”
Dawn: *shakes her head a few times, looks up* “Spike! You’re alright!”
Spike: “No thanks to that bitca Senator....”
Dawn: “Senator? Wait... I was in the White House when.... Zoey!”
The two look across the small room where they’re being held hostage to see... Zoey, slumped in the corner....
Dawn: “Zoey! Wake up, we’ve got to get out of here!”
Spike: “Come on girl, time to rise and shine, face the day, all that bloody stuff you people use to get yourselves out of bed while us normal people are turning in for the day....”
Dawn: “Spike, I don’t think you’re helping.”
Zoey: *starts to stir* “Charlie....”
Spike: “No idea who you’re talking about, but come on, let’s get moving....”
Dawn: *helps Zoey up, but Zoey’s still weak and not standing well on her own* “What’s wrong with her....”
Lily: “She’s under a spell...”
Spike: “You again!” *charges screaming, swings a fist at Lily when...* “AAARGH!” *falls down, shocked by chip*
Lily: *looks down at fallen Spike* “I never would have believed it... William the bloody lacks a soul, but has a heart....Too bad humans can’t change as easily....”
Dawn: “What are you talking about?!”
Lily: “Humans would never accept us... if they knew what we were, they would destroy us. Vampires, demons, even Slayers and Keys. That’s why my brother tried to change it all, and your sister killed him for it....”
Dawn: “Your brother was insane! He wanted to kick off his new era by eating a class of innocent students!”
Spike: *getting up, weakened by the shock* “And I don’t care what kind of sodding plan you have, the Slayer’s going to send you to join your brother!”
Lily: *laughs* “The Slayer.... you mean this girl here?” *nods at Zoey* “Well, she’s not slaying anyone right now.....”
*The library of Congress*
Josh: “I’ve got something....”
Giles: “What?”
Josh: “Zoey.... she’s the chosen one?”
Giles: “For the moment, yes. Why?”
Josh: “The book says that the spell can only be performed on the sixth hour of the sixth day of each millennium....”
Giles: “Right... and unlike CNN, the ancient prophecies can actually count.... but that means the ritual will happen in under 24 hours....”
Josh: “It says that the Chosen one can be embued with the force of the First Slayer, the primeval warrior beast....”
Giles: “Oh, yes yes, that’s not necessarily bad... we cast a spell with Buffy a while back that also drew on that power... it’s dangerous, but with the power in hand the Slayer is nigh unstoppable....”
Josh: “I wouldn’t be so sure about that....”
*The room*
Spike: “Look, you bloody bitca, even if you DO kill her, there’ll just be another one and SHE will see you dead.”
Lily: “Ah, that’s the beauty part of it. At the chosen hour, I can embue the Chosen one so she becomes the embodiment of the First Slayer... the essense of death. Only, as you can see, the body she occupies is helpless. Then I shall call upon the God of Life, Kana’Rith, who shall destroy the essence of the first Slayer. This girl is going to be the LAST Slayer. And when I sacrifice her, the world shall be mine.....”
To be continued.....
Next: The showdown.....
