Continuity Notes: This fic
is set after the Angel episode “Epiphany”, and the Buffy episode “Crush” (but
before “I was made to love you”). It
occurs during the 11th season of Law and Order. Just FYI for you B/S shippers, I'm not
necessarily Anti-Spike, but he *IS* playing the part of the defendant here, so
don't hate me, okies?

*Downtown Sunnydale*
Briscoe and Green are walking through Sunnydale, looking somewhat skeptical.
Green: “So what do you think of what Lockley says?”
Briscoe: “Well, I don’t like the idea of vampires and demons anymore than running into one of my ex-wives, but at the least our guy seems to THINK he’s a serial killer from turn of the century London, who was called “Spike” because he put railroad spikes in people’s heads. Either way, he’s dangerous.”
Green: *looking skeptically at the door they’ve arrived at* “Well, I just hope this place Lockley pointed us to can help us find the guy.”
Briscoe opens the door and the two step into the bar, which is dark and misty. Various demons and vampires are drinking around the room, and a red neon sign flashes above the bar: “Willy’s Place”.
Briscoe: “And to think I gave up drinking....”
Willy, the Snitch: *sees the two* “How are you gentlemen? Welcome to Willy’s Place. What can I get you?”
Green: “I’m Detective Green of the NYPD, and this is my partner Detective Briscoe. We’re looking for information on this man.” *shows a police sketch of Spike*
Willy: *holds his hands up* “Oh no, gentlemen, you must not have heard. I’m reformed! I don’t snitch anymore, and I run a respectable place here. I’ve even got a sign, and my customers won’t be happy if I give out all sorts of information on them.
Briscoe: “Well, maybe the costumed freaks in the back would be happier if we made them all take off their masks and show us some ID.” *vampy in the back bears his fangs in game face and bristles angrily at this comment* “And believe me, us arresting you and sending you back to New York as an accomplice in the murder of an NYPD officer would be a lot worse for business than doing a good deed....”
Willy: “Okay, okay, Spike isn’t too popular around here these days anyway since he runs with the Slayer and her gang.”
Green: “The Slayer?”
Willy: “Yeah, Buffy Summers. Be careful if you go after her, though, she’s strong.”
Briscoe: “Yeah, right. Thanks.”
Green: *as they leave* “Didn’t Lockley call our victim a ‘Slayer’?”
Briscoe: “I wouldn’t know, I don’t listen to metal.”
*PLOSCNTM*
*Buffy’s house*
Joyce: *looks puzzled* “Police?” *suddenly concerned* “Nothing’s happened to Buffy or Dawn, has it?”
Green: “No, ma’am, we just have a few questions for your daughter.”
Joyce: *relieved, but puzzled* “I was informed that all charges regarding the incident at her school were dropped.”
Briscoe: “Oh, no we’re not after her. We’re investigating an associate of hers named ‘Spike’” *shows the composite drawing*
Joyce: “You can’t be serious. I mean, I know that Spike did some bad things in the past, but he’s gotten better. I don’t think he’s a threat to anyone.”
Green: “Well, would you know where he is?”
Joyce: *thinking, finally* “I’m not entirely sure. Maybe you two should talk to my daughter. She is probably at the Magic Box, downtown.”
Briscoe: “Thanks for your time.” *as they get in the car* “Nice lady.”
Green: “Yeah, but maybe that Willy wasn’t totally full of it after all. This Buffy was implicated in a murder at her school a few years back, and was suspended for a while after she was cleared of charges. We’re not going to find out why, though, cause the Principal was reported missing after the school... blew up at Buffy’s graduation.”
Briscoe: “You don’t usually see someone write that so calmly in a police report.”
Green: “Must be an unusual town.”
Briscoe: “Oh yeah, we’re in California.”
*PLOSCNTM*
*The Magic Box*
Anya: “Welcome to the Magic Box. Please buy things!”
Xander: *slight sigh* “Well, you’re getting better, An.”
Briscoe: *shows badge* “We’re looking for Buffy Summers.”
Willow: *from the research table* “That troublemaker, what’d she do now?” *looks up, sees the badge* “Oh god, what did she do?!”
Green: “Buffy didn’t do anything, but we’re trying to track down her friend Spike.”
Xander: *darkly* “Now HIM doing something, I can believe. After he stalked her like that....”
Briscoe: “You’ve met him? Would you have any idea where we might find him?”
Xander: “He crashes in a crypt in the cemetery...” *stops, wondering if these cops know about vampys*
Green: “Of, you mean the ‘vampire’ thing....” *not realizing these people are serious*
Xander: “Yeah, that.”
Briscoe: “Well, we’ll go make sure he doesn’t bother you or your friends anymore.”
Willow: “Wait! Look, you guys should just go easy on him. I mean, sure there’s still the whole Vampire thing, but he’s getting better, really!”
Green: “We’ll keep an open mind.” *They leave*
Anya: *disappointed* “Hey! They didn’t buy anything!”
*PLOSCNTM*
*Spike’s crypt, night*
Briscoe kicks in the door, and Green enters, with his gun drawn. Briscoe follows, both being quiet. They go from room to room, not finding Spike. Suddenly, Green calls out.
Green: “Hey Briscoe, look at this!” *emerges holding up a tattered leather jacket*
Briscoe: “Officer Tinsley had one of those, and it was taken during the attack....”
Spike: *entering, carrying groceries* “’Ey! Who the ‘ell are you, and what are you doing in my house?!”
Green: “NYPD! FREEZE!”
Spike: “Oh bugger it!” *drops the groceries, splits*
Briscoe and Green take off after him, and they chase him through the cemetery, but Spike is going to escape, when he gets to the gates, a bit ahead of the Detectives, only to see it blocked by.... the vampy from Willy’s.
Vampy: “Not enough you have to turn on and kill your own, now you bring the police to our place.”
Spike: “Don’t push me. You’re the guy I can kill.”
Vampy: “Well, that’s why I brought help.” *three more vampies come walking out of the darkness, surrounding Spike, and the approaching Detectives.”
Briscoe: “Uh... thanks for stopping him for us.”
Vampy: “No problem. After we kill him, we can always eat you two.”
With that, the vampys begin closing on Briscoe, Green, and Spike. One charges at Green, who fires his gun several times, but the bullets don’t stop the vampy. It lunges at Green, only to be suddenly hit by a crossbow bolt from behind, dusting less than a foot away from him.
Buffy: “Don’t you vampires even respect the law?”
Vampy: “The Slayer!”
The second minion charges Buffy, who fights it briefly, and dusts it. The third minion flees, while Spike fights the leader, finally hitting him in the face with a headbutt, and staking the stunned vampire. However, as the vampy dusts, Green tackles Spike from behind and slaps cuffs on him.
Green: “You’re under arrest for the murder of Officer Anita Tinsley of the NYPD.”
Spike: *looks at Buffy* “Aren’t you going to help me?”
Buffy: *coldly* “You said so yourself, Spike, you’re a big bad man...”
Briscoe: “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be provided to you....”
*PLOSCNTM*
*Sunnydale PD Station, interrogation room*
Briscoe: “I don’t like your chances.”
Spike: “Sod off.”
Briscoe: “Once they find Officer Tinsley’s prints on that coat, you’re done. Your best shot is to confess now, tell the judge how sorry you are, and maybe you won’t have to die. Aren’t you afraid of dying, Spike?”
Spike: “Let me think for a minute.... NO.”
Green: *slams hands down on the table* “Well in that case, Mr. Vampire, maybe we should put you in a cell with a nice view of your last California sunrise, before we ship you back to the city....”
Man: “What you should DO is let my client go, now.”
Briscoe: “Your client is in a lot of trouble, maybe you can explain how much to him. And incidentally, he never asked for his lawyer....”
Man: “Well, he doesn’t have to. That’s one of the advantages to being a client of Lindsay McDonald.... of Wolfram and Hart.”
