New York City Subway Station, 1977
Beat Cop: *to the newspaper stand guy* “What you think of the Series?”
Paper Guy: “Yankees, no questions asked....”
Cop: “Wouldn’t that be nice... Yanks haven’t taken home a World Championship since ’62... and to think we lost to the Reds last year....”
Paper Guy: “I don’t care how good LA thinks they is, when this one is over, there’s only going to be one song at Yankee stadium, and that’s Frankie’s song. It’ll be pretty crowded down here when it starts, that’s for sure.”
Cop: “Yeah, well for now it’s quiet. Enjoy it while it lasts...” *he stops talking to allow for the roar of a subway train pulling into station. Suddenly, as the doors open, people scream and start running for the exits.*
Woman: *running* “Oh my god, I think she’s dead!”
Cop: *yelling into radio* “We’ve got a situation in the subway, I need backup, NOW!’
*An hour later*
Detective: *arriving on scene, enters subway, and approaches cop* “I’ve got reports of one victim, African-American female, mid-twenties. What happened down here?”
Cop: “It’s worse than you think, sir. We just found this on her....” *pulls out an evidence bag containing.... an NYPD badge* “Undercover with the Two Seven.”
Detective: “Bloody hell! We are going to FIND this guy, and we’re going to do it NOW. What have we got?”
Cop: “Witnesses are working with the sketch artists now, we think we’ll get a good working sketch. CSI thinks they’ve got the perp’s fingerprints. And one more thing, sir...” *holds up another evidence bag, containing.... a stake* “Our girl apparently was carrying this with her. What do you think she was doing, building a really short fence?”
Detective: “It’ll be tall enough to hold this guy when we find him.... Murder one of a cop? He’s going in the ground.”

*27th Precinct House, NYPD, Present Day*
Van Buren: *hollering across the squad room* “Lenny, Ed, get in here.”
(Lenny) Briscoe: “What’s wrong?”
Van Buren: “What are you two working on at the moment?”
(Ed) Green: “We’re following up the so-called leads on the Patterson case. I swear, we’ve been to half the pawn shops on the Upper East Side....”
Van Buren: “Well, you’re off the hook for the other half. I just got a call, and we’ve got a new lead on the Tinsley case.”
Briscoe: “The Tinsley case? If you’re talking about the case I think you’re talking about, the leads are all over twenty years old!”
Green: “I remember that case... an undercover cop was killed in the subway. They had fingerprints, and a complete sketch, numerous eyewitnesses, and some weird rumors about vampires or something. But the guy got clean away....”
Van Buren: “Well, LAPD just entered his prints into their system.”
Briscoe: “And let me guess, they’re too busy to spare any of their own people to investigate a New York City murder, so we’re on the next plane for California.”
Van Buren: “Anita Tinsley’s murder is the only unsolved death of an officer in this precinct’s history. She was also the first African-American woman to become an officer here, and she’s one of the reasons why I joined the force. And we share a first name. You find this guy, and you bring him back here so we can bring him to justice.”
Green: “When do we leave?”
Van Buren: “Not until tonight. Some of the eyewitnesses are still in the city, so try and interview them so you’ll know what you’re after.”

*a house*
Woman: “Officer Tinsley saved my life that day...”
Green: “What happened?”
Woman: “This punk, he had bleached blonde spikey hair, and a bunch of piercings, he jumped me in the car. I thought I was a goner, but then Officer Tinsley showed up. I could have sworn she shot him three times, and he went down. She came to check on me, and was shooing me and the other passengers out of the car when he got up and hit her. They were fighting, but we all ran... we weren’t as brave as she was.”
Briscoe: “She was a hero. And we’re going to catch her killer. But one more thing... why does the report say something about vampires?”
Woman: *pulls back her hair from her neck revealing.... two fang scars* “Because that man bit me.”
Green: *both he and Briscoe are shocked for a moment* “Uh... I’m sorry, Ma’am. We’ll catch him for you too.”
*outside*
Briscoe: “Vampires, huh? And for this, we get to go to LA.

*LAPD station*
Detective: “Well, you have to understand, Officer, we’ve got a lot of crimes here. We can’t go following up on every single lead, especially if they involve some crackpot theory...”
Green: “That’s DETECTIVE. And we’ve got a dead NYPD cop here, so why don’t you cut us a break and help us out?”
Detective: *sighs, walks to filing cabinet* “The case files were investigated by our local Agent Mulder, former Detective Kate Lockley. She was fired a few months back for doing strange stuff like this....”
Briscoe: “Isn’t Mulder the guy?”
Detective: “Hm... but Scully’s the skeptic....”
Green: *sighs* “What have you got for us?”
Detective: “A string of assaults a few years back, several victims were bitten by someone or something over the course of a few weeks. ME couldn’t tell if it was an animal attack or what, but Lockley insisted it was the work of vampires. We ran all the evidence she had after she was fired, and entered her crime scene prints in the system. Maybe our guy is your guy.”
Briscoe: “Well, how do we FIND our guy?”
Detective: “That, you’ll have to ask Detective Lockley.”
*(PLOSCNTM)*
*Kate’s Apartment*
Briscoe: *knocking on the door* “Ms Lockley? We’re with the NYPD. We’ve got some questions for you....”
Kate: *opens door, looks out* “You have GOT to be kidding me.”
Green: “No Ma’am, we’re chasing a suspect your reports said bit some people downtown?”
Kate: *shakes head, walks into apartment, leaving the door open, but pointedly not inviting them in*
Briscoe: “Uh... mind if we come in?”
Kate: “That depends....” *wheels around, holding her cross with sharpened end, watches and sees that the two detectives don’t flinch, though they look completely incredulous* “Sure.”
Green: “What’s that for, to keep the vampires out?”
Kate: “Basically. You people have NO idea what you’re dealing with.”
Briscoe: “Well, would you care to enlighten us?”
Kate: “How bout we just say that the guy you’re after does a REALLY good job of imitating a vampire... right down to the part where an officer fired two rounds into him as he ran off, and he didn’t flinch.”
Green: “Maybe the officer missed?”
Kate: “It was a narrow alleyway, and I investigated myself. The bullets would have been there if they hadn’t hit him. So you’re saying this guy is wanted in New York? What’s so important to bring you guys out here?”
Briscoe: “He killed an NYPD officer named Anita Tinsley in 1977.”
Kate: *thinks for a moment, then turns pale, heads for her bookshelf and pulls out a book* “We confiscated this stolen copy of the Watcher’s Chronicles from a magic shop that was conducting illegal animal sacrifices on its premises for some sort of demon worship. The Council likes to maintain its secrecy, so it never claimed the books, and I got to keep them. Now I seem to remember....” *pages through* “Slayer Anita Tinsley killed by.... William the Bloody, a.k.a. Spike.” *looks up at Briscoe and Green* “You two are in a lot MORE trouble than you realize....”
