The Fallen: Chapter 1

Previously, on GA's Buffy/West Wing Crossover Fic:

Sam: "Tell me about it. Willow was at it pretty late, and she had trouble breaking into the DoD files...."
Willow: "Sam! We've got trouble...."
Sam and Toby run into Sam's office.
Toby: "What's wrong?"
Willow: "I... I don't know... I was giving it another attempt and suddenly...."
Sam: "Hm... the screen's locked..."
Computer: *speaks* "Rosenberg, Willow."
Sam: "Wha..."
Computer: "Witch, highly dangerous, also skilled with computers..."
Willow: "How... who are you? How do you know this?!"
Computer: "Mother told me. She kept files on all of the Slayer's friends..."
Willow: "ADAM?!"
Toby: "Who's Adam?!"
Adam: "I was a bio-mechanical construct, created from cybernetically enhanced human and demon hybrids."
Willow: "You were a freak! But you're dead! We pulled out your power supply."
Adam: "Indeed. I no longer have a body. But my mind was linked to the computers in the Initiative, and I was downloaded along with the other files in their database."
Sam: "So, if you're in the secure database we can't get into, how can we be talking to you?"
Adam: "Mother designed me with 512 bit architecture and high level RSA decryption. Your encryption does not contain me."
Toby: "Then what exactly do you want?"
Adam: "You seek access to Mother's files. I was trying to figure out why."
Sam: "We NEED those files! They're the only chance we have of coming clean on the Initiative's activities!"
Toby: "And we need to figure out who accessed them from where! People could die here!"
Adam: *pause* "That is... acceptable."
Willow: "Wait, you don't understand.... we're not talking about a few people, like the ones you were going to kill... we're talking about ALL people. If Senator Wilkins gains control of the White House, she'll be able to give Demons a free hand, and humanity won't stand a chance!"
Adam: "Searching... Wilkins... sister of the demon who was involved in the incident at Sunnydale High School that led to the formal commissioning of the Initiative. But he was killed by the Slayer. She defeated me. With your help. You shall stop Wilkins too. Revealing the files could compromise Mother's plan."
Willow: "The Slayer... Buffy... is dead."
Adam: "Searching..... Summers, Buffy Anne. Died May 2001. She saved the world. A lot." *pauses for a while* "Deleting files...*
Toby: "You bastard!"
Adam: "The demon species is imperfect, as is the human. Neither must perish, if Mothers's vision is to be achieved. Her plans have been protected. Your media shall not be able to determine that the files are incomplete. Survive, Willow Rosenberg, and we will meet again...."
The computer screen unfreezes, and all the Initiative files and logs of who accessed them start coming up on the screen.
Willow: "That was creepy.."

*Sunnydale Junkyard, late September 2001*
The city of Sunnydale has recently been trashed, and this means an unusual amount of assorted debris and smashed stuff has been dumped in the Sunnydale junk yard.  And yet, like all seemingly abandoned places in Sunnydale, this one has people wandering around in it.  Four folks, in fact, combing the junkyard for stuff.  One of the group, a man with long blond hair and glasses, leans up against a car.

Langly: Remind me again why we're dumpster diving in Northern California?

A man with brown hair, seemingly out of place in a junkyard because he is wearing a suit, steps up.

Byers: Alright, so the government admitted that there was a conspiracy called the Initative in this town a few years back, and that they were experimenting on human beings.

The oldest of the group, with grey hair and glasses, leans up against a trashed car.

Frohike: They admitted that their test subjects got out of hand, and trashed the place.  A year and a half later, monstrous looking people trash the entire town.
Byers: If this means the government didn't STOP the experiments like they said they did, then we've got ourselves a front page story.
Langly: *darkly* Or we could just get beaten to death by some escaped subjects from the last round.  I don't think they left us any physical evidence here....

Suddenly, they hear a shout.
Jimmy: Oh my god, it's a human head!
The three Gunmen run as quickly as they can over to where Jimmy, a former football player, is looking at what appears to be the severed head of a blonde girl.
Jimmy: What are we going to do?  We should call the police... *starts to run for a phone*
Frohike: *catches his arm* Not so fast... there's no blood, and that head looks perfectly preserved, yet judging by the pile of stuff around it, it's been here a few weeks...
Langly: I don't care, I'm NOT touching it!

Byers bends down and examines the head more closely, sniffing the air, and satisfied, grabs the head and lifts it out of the trash pile to reveal the top of.... the Buffy Bot.

Byers: *looking at wires coming out of the bottom of the head* It's some sort of robot....
Jimmy: The government... trying to replace us with robotic copies.... how could they?!
Frohike: *examining closer* Looks a bit hap-hazard for government contractors...
Langly: *overcoming his distaste for it* Yeah, this is definitely free-lance work.  Something home brew.  Whomever broke it probably thought it couldn't be repaired and dumped it.  Let's see if we can find the rest of the pieces.
Byers: Yeah, either way, we're got ourselves a story....

*Meanwhile, in Chicago*
It's a dark, basement hallway, with poor lighting and assorted file cabinets and other things.  A girl walks down the hall, briskly, looking over her shoulder as she goes and picking up the pace.  She rounds a corner, only to find..... a dead end.  She turns around, and the look on her face is one of emotion, sheer, overwhelming..... frustration.  She tosses her head and walks into the light, looking at a slip of paper in her hand to reveal... Nurse Abby Lockhart.

Abby: *muttering darkly* Everyone takes off after the Labor Day rush, and I've got to go crawling for a paper record because the computers are down again.  *squints at a barely legible note, with directions to the records room* Luka, when I get out of this basement, I'm going to shove those records you asked for right up... wait, that could be.... 0314?  I thought I saw that somewhere around here.....

She walks down the hallway and comes to a door marked "Room 0314", and goes to open it, only to find it's locked.  She looks down and sees that it's locked not only with a key, but also a numeric keypad and an ID reader.  Abby swipes her ID, but the card reader flashes red.

Abby: Access denied?  What kind of medical records room has this kind of security?  *shakes her head in frustration, when she sees a sign down the hall - "Medical Records, Room 0319"*  Okay, there we go....

As she walks off towards the room she was after, the camera pans down to the card reader display, which in big red letters reads "Room 0314, ACCESS DENIED" as the music hits for....
