What is difficult about being old?

4.  Poem

Shall I? - Or - Have I?

Author Unknown

Just a line to say I'm living

That I'm not among the dead.

Though I'm getting more forgetful

And more mixed up in the head.

For sometimes I can't remember

When I stand at foot of stair,

If I must go up for something

Or I've just come down from there.

And before the frig', so often

My poor mind is filled with doubt,

Have I just put food away, or

Have I come to take some out?

And there's times when it is dark out

With my nightcap on my head,

I don't know if I'm retiring

Or just getting out of bed.

So if it's my turn to write you

There's no need of getting sore,

I may think I have written

And don't want to be a bore.

So, remember...I do love you,

And I wish that you were here;

But now, it is nearly mail time

So I must say: "Goodbye Dear".

Here I stand beside the mailbox,

With my face so very red,

Instead of mailing you this letter...

I have opened it instead....

5.  Story:  you can encourage old people

Big Jim Stone had scored 236 goals as a footballer  and was playing in his last ever match.  It was the Cup Final.  But Big Jim was no longer as agile as he had once been. He fumbled the ball and kicked badly, and in the second half he was responsible for an own goal. He was called off and as he walked off the pitch and headed toward the shelter, a crescendo of yelling and booing reached his ears. Just then a boy jumped over the railing onto the pitch. With tears streaming down his face, he threw his arms around the legs of his hero. Big Jim didn't hesitate for one second. He picked up the boy, hugged him, and set him down on his feet, patting his head gently. The noise from the stands came to an abrupt halt. Suddenly there was no more booing. In fact, hush fell over the entire park. In those brief moments, the fans saw two heroes: Big Jim, who in spite of his dismal day on the field could still care about a little boy; and the small lad, who cared about the feelings of another human being. Both had melted the hearts of the crowd.

Grey hair is a crown of glory
