Ash Wednesday – assembly

N.B.  Before this assembly get the headteacher to put an old tie on supplied by you!

What’s the bravest thing you can do? – Get example.

Ask teacher if anyone would be brave enough to cut his tie in half.

Who would be brave enough to cut the headmaster’s tie in half – ham it up.

Get volunteer to do it or do it yourself.

Ask who is the bravest in this story.  Tell story of Pharisee and tax collector?

The bravest thing to do is say sorry.  Say that God always forgives.

Explain Ash Wednesday – beginning of Lent.

Reflection:

In a few moments of silence, ask the children to think about things they do that they know are wrong. Ask all the children to say 'I'm sorry' out loud, together, after an appropriate thought from you, e.g.

For all the things that I do that I know I shouldn't – I'm sorry.
