FF:U? Final Fantasy anime? Before you freak out, there was a much older anime, simply titled "Final Fantasy". This anime is simply modern in animation and references to the games up to X.
The story revolves around 12 year-old twins Ai and Yu Hayakawa, who are searching for their parents who went to the Outer World to research the life and magic there (which would be the anime equivalent to any FF world you've played in). They are aided by Lisa, a young woman traveling the fantasy world for personal reasons. Although their mission is at first timid, as you can guess, it grows into the multitude of saving all the worlds at risk of Earl Tyrant's wrath.
Now that you have your female and kids in the party, it's time for the next factor. Kaze, a mysterious traveler from a lost world, comes time and time again to save Lisa and the twins from certain death, but as luck would have it, denies commitment to protecting them constantly, although he happens upon them several times and ends up saving them. Of course, something tragic happened in his past that he can not quite remember, but still remains cold and distant (for some odd reason, the name Vincent comes to mind...) He has the ability to *gasp* summon! *FF fans squeal* Kaze summons with his powerful Magun, with the assistance of different elemental "Soils".
With a show like this, there has to be a rivalry, and indeed there is. Not fully explained in the anime, everytime Kaze (called Kurokaze, or "black wind" by Makenshi) comes in contact with Makenshi (called Shiroikumo, or "White Cloud"), an evil swordsman, they rush into combat, with no regards to anyone else who might be nearby. The major threat to the many different worlds, besides Earl (who is actually a snobby kid who likes to eat Chobobo meat...), is the monster Earl is trying to catch: Chaos. Of course, Earl has several minions to do his bidding in finding the parts of Chaos and throwing Lisa and the others off course. Since Makenshi (Kumo) is under the authority of Earl, Kaze runs into Lisa often since both have similar enemies.
Even though all that sounds sort of complicated, it really isn't. Fact is, I had trouble watching more than a handful of episodes at a time. Though I did enjoy Chobi the chocobo run around and be cute, all the references to the FF games (cactars, identifying summons, etc), and the attractive anime version of Cid *drool*, FF:U is nothing to scream about. Also, the animation isn't what I would call top notch, although it has its few moments. If you've been living under a rock for the past 10 years or simply don't play Final Fantasy, stay away from here. ^^ For everyone else, have fun!
