One of the first recorded sea goddesses connected with this swallowing story was the Babylonian Derceto, whose name means ?The Whale of Der." She swallowed then gave birth to the god Ea-Oannes. The whale also demotes the waters of life and the regeneration process, whether that is by rebirth back into the physical or awakening in a heavenly realm. Whales were known to the coastal Native Americans. Even though they were hunted by some tribes as food, they were considered powerful, magickal beings.
