THE SATYR:The Greek satyrs were horned deities of wild nature and followed the gods Pan, Silvanus, Faunus, Dionysus, and Bacchus. Pan was known to the Greeks as the "Little God," the Horned God of Nature, or the goat-foot god; he was a frequent companion of the god Dionysus. Pan was one of the oldest of Greek deities and the Positive Life Force of the world. In his light aspect, Pan symbolized the woodlands and the wild creatures, healing, gardening, plants and animals, music and dancing, soothsaying, and lovemaking. However, he had a dark side in which he caused the wild and unreasoning terror sometimes experienced in lonely woodlands and mountains. The Greeks identified the Egyptian Amen-Ra with Pan and called his holy city of Chemmis by the Greek name Panopolis, "city of Pan." The Roman version of a satyr was called a faun. This was a woodland spirit, half-man, half-goat, with twisted ram horns, pointed ears, and a goat tail. As companionsof the god Faunus, fauns lived in the wild forests.
