THE RAT:

To the Japanese, the rat is the first sign of their zodiac, a symbol of fertilty and wealth.
A white rat is the companion of the Japanese god of happiness and symbol of Daikoku, the god of prosperity.
The Chinese, though, believe the rat represents timidity and meanness.
These creatures were sacred to the people of Phrygia, and in Egypt they symbolized wisdom.
A rat is the steed of the Indian-elephant-headed god Ganesha and considered to be the most powerful of all demons; even with this designation, the Hindus say that the rat represents prudence and foresight.

Superstitions

In Celtic lore, rats are not mentioned favorably.
An old Irish belief says that rats can be killed if one recites rhyming spells.
Rats will desert a ship that is going to sink.
Rats leaving a house means the building will collapse.
