| The fourteenth rune and sixth of the Second Aett of the Elder Futhark is called "Perdhro" or "Perthro". It's sound is "P". Perdhro's most common interpretation is the "dice cup" used to cast lots. Another possible meaning is a pawn or game-piece. Both dice and game-pieces symbolize the uncertainties of the game of life. As a game-piece, Perdhro symbolizes the interaction between personal freewill and the constraints of our circumstances. When we play, the pattern of the board and the rules of movement of the game-pieces are already laid down. But beyond these limitations the actual movements of our game are free. How the game is played depends upon the skill and will of the players, and their interaction. Perdhro is also a rune of memory and recollection, problem-solving, and esoteric knowledge. It gives us access both to the inner secrets of the human world and also to the inner workings of nature. It empowers us with the ability to distinguish things of value from those that are worthless. Modern pagans see Perdhro as the womb of the Great Goddess that brings all life into existence. In this sense, it exposes things that previously were concealed, turning potential into physical reality. |
