THE JACKAL:In parts of India there still exists an old belief that the leader of the jackal pack has a horn in the middle of its forehead; they say that any human who manages to get this horn will receive great benefits. In the Hindu belief, jackals and ravens accompany Black Kali in her aspect as destroyer. Shiva, in his aspect as consort of Kali, was called a jackal. Anubis, an Egyptian god who presided over the tombs as Lord of the Dead, had the head of a jackal. Anubis, called the Opener of the Way, was a psychopomp who guided the souls of the dead to the Judgement Hall of the Otherworld where the souls were weighed for truth on the scales of Maat. His presence was considered essential in the rituals of Isis and Osiris. Roman processions honoring Isis always has a priest wearing the Anubis mask walking before the image of the goddess. To the followers of Zoroaster, the jackal was another animal of the demon Ahriman, and was, therefore, evil.
