THE GRIFFIN:

The Griffin was enormous, with the head, claws, and wings of an eagle, and the back parts of a lion. Its tail was long and serpentine.
A Sun symbol, this creature was said to build its nest in the mountains and line it with gold.
It symbolized the combination of Earth and Sky.
The Mesopotamian griffin had a crested head, while that of the Greeks was pictured with a mane of spiral curls.
Among the Greeks the griffin was consecrated to the goddess Nemesis and the god Apollo in their vengeful aspects.
As the guardian to the pathway to spiritual enlightenment, this creature was usually shown next to a Tree of Life or a similar symbol.
The griffin symbolized the seasons and guarded the Sun, the Sacred Golden Apples, and treasures.
Medievil scholars wrote that the griffin was especially hostile to horses.
