The Hindu goddess Durga was sent by the gods to kill a buffalo monster; the buffalo is still sacrificed to Her. Even the Romans knew of buffalos and used them in the amphitheater in Rome. Native Americans, especially the Oglala Sioux, considered the buffalo the chief of all animals and said it represented the Earth.
