THE APE or MONKEY:

The ancient Egyptians considered the baboon to be sacred to the gods Thoth (deity of wisdom) and Hapi (god of the Nile). Images of Thoth show either an ibis-head or a baboon-head; this baboon-head is sometimes mistaken for that of a dog. In paintings, Thoth is often portrayed as a baboon as he stands in the Judgement Hall of Osiris in the Land of the Dead.
Ancient records say that four apes sit beside the lake of Fire near the throne of Osiris. These creatures listen to all appeals of the soul and judge it before it can pass into the lands of Osiris.
In the Hindu cultures of India, apes and monkeys represent benevolence and gentleness. Because of their monkey god Hanuman, who rescued the kidnapped Sita, the Hindu people consider these creatures sacred.
However, in Buddhism the monkey signifies greed.
The monkey is revered in Japan. There are legends of what are called the Three Mystic Monkeys; the names of these are Mizaru (hands over the eyes), Kikazaru (hands over the ears), and Iwazaru (hands over the mouth).
The Greek Eleusinian Mysteries had an initiation formula which reminds one of these three monkeys: things seen, heard, and tasted.
In China, the monkey was said to have the power to grant good health, success, and protection.
Several West African tribes consider the monkey to be a sacred animal and the servant of Ogugu.
Even the Mayan god of the North Star was pictured with a monkey-head.
Several ancient writers of the Mediterranean cultures, such as Pliny and Aesop, used the ape to symbolize foolishness and the kind of mother love that smothers.
