Spread 1. The Yes/No Spread |
This was the first spread that I learnt, and is a nice simple and quick spread to use, but it does require the use of inverted cards. Therefore, before starting, make sure that you thoroughly shuffle your cards, halving the deck, and inverting one half. Do this several times to ensure a truly random order, not just of the cards, but of inverted and non-inverted cards. |
Before the cards are cut by the querent, make sure that the querent has the question firmly fixed in his/her mind, and that the question is positively based, which means that a yes from the cards is a good thing, and a no is a bad thing. A negatively based question brings interpretation problems, as the cards will always try and view yes as a positive answer, but if yes is a negative answer for the querent, what are the cards meant to say? They will end up trying to say a positive answer for the querent, but its language is negative. |
After the cards have been cut and re-stacked by the querent, lay out the top 7 as shown in the diagram. |

An initial and general yes or no answer to the question can be obtained by comparing the number of inverted to non-inverted cards - the higher the proportion of inverted cards, the more decisive the No is, while more non-inverted cards mean a more positive answer. |
By studying the cards in sequence, an explanation of why the cards are saying yes or no can be obtained, and their position in the spread show what area's it are that may need more work. |
Position 1 - The Current |
This card shows the querents current position and attitudes. |
Position 2 - The Past |
This card shows a factor in the past that is either supportive of the question and querent, or stands as a negative problem or situation that is still effecting the querent. |
Position 3 - The Near Future |
This shows how the situation will progress normally within the next few weeks to half a year. |
Position 4 - Accompanying Emotion to position 3 |
This card is the emotional attachment and explanation for position 3. It will show how the querent will feel about the way the situation is progressing. NB an inverted card in position 4 with a non inverted card in position 3 tends to show doubts on the querents part, almost like saying that even though the situation is working out, the querent is not sure about where it is heading, and if s/he wants to be going there. |
Positions 5, 6 and 7 are the cards that represent the more distant future. |
Position 5 - Emotion |
This card shows the emotional state and feelings of the querent in the distant future. |
Position 6 - Material |
This card represents the more material aspect of the querents state in the future. |
Position 7 - Final Outcome |
This card is the final future outcome of the question, and needs to be read in conjunction with cards 5 and 6, as they are further explanations into specific areas within that future, while card no. 7 is the overall effect. |
