WELCOME TO MRS. L. GRIER'S CLASS!

Hello and welcome to a new semester at Fairmont High School!

I pledge to you an environment conducive to learning and a commitment to excellence through a high quality curriculum. I ask that you commit yourself to being industrious and well focused and practice good citizenship with your fellow classmates. You will be required to keep a daily journal of the objectives, activities and what you have learned each day. (This allows you to keep up with what we are doing in the classroom as well as an assessment on what you are learning.)

Your parent/guardian(s) are responsible for providing a valid phone number, street address, mailing address and/or e-mail address for efficient communication from teacher and/or administrators. I will attempt to inform you, and your parent/guardian of your progress in class via interim reports, notes, e-mail, phone calls or in person. Of course your parent/guardian may contact me during my planning period before school, or after school for a private conference provided an appointment is made with me personally or through the assistant principal. (If you are a Level I or Level II student in Language Arts or Reading, your parent/guardian must come to school for a parent conference to sign a PEP - student/school/parent contract or personal education plan.)

All rules and policies of Fairmont High School will be observed and enforced. Three tardies will result in a referral to administration. Parents/guardians will be notified of any class disruption or lack of student participation. Appropriate behavior will be noted and rewarded. Also, remember that this year there will be only 5 excused absences allowed. All missed assignments, homework and tests will need to be made up within the 5-day time frame, during Saturday Academy, as mandated in the school handbook. After those 5 days, no work will be accepted nor grade received. You may make up work assignments (other than tests) by coming online to this website - http://www.geocities.com/griersclass/GRIER.html - for a list of students in each class as well as a list of assignments that you can pull up, when at home, to make up work missed or to complete for extra credit in my class over and beyond the daily activities.

I would appreciate your support this semester in making it as successful as possible. You can help by doing your best, be on time for class, be prepared for class with text/pencils/paper, have a positive attitude for learning and getting along, and be responsible for your work as well as your actions. Please read your Student Handbook and familiarize yourself with the school policy and rules. I also have some class rules posted on the walls in my classroom that you are responsible for abiding by.

The course will follow the Standard Course of Studies as provided and required by the NC Department of Public Instruction. VoCATS is the test bank of questions that the state uses to measure student knowledge of the course.
Level I: 44 and below....Level II: 45-64....Level III: 65-81....Level IV: 82 & above
Each student is expected to perform at least at a Level III on the Final Exam or EOC test (which counts 1/5 of over-all grade.) This can be achieved by:
1. The instructor keeping students on track and on task.
2. The student keeping himself/herself on track and on task without unnecessary comments, disruptions and absences.
3. The parent insuring that his/her child is in class daily and doing homework reinforcement nightly.

Grading in my class is based on student journals, homework, test scores, performance and/or projects.

Numerical scores will be translated to alphabetical grades accordingly:
100+ = A+
95-100 = A
93-94 = A-
91-92 = B+
87-90 = B
85-86 = B-
83-84 = C+
79-82 = C
77-78 = C-
75-76 = D+
70-74 = D
0-69 = F

Our goal at FHS is to have each and every student meet their educational objectives. This can only be achieved by cooperation, assistance, and attendance in class, and persistent pursuit of goals.

Please feel free to email me any time!
